The Higher Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) course is a four-year course involving studies in areas of specialization in arts, commerce or science, together with studies in the fundamentals, principles and practices of education. A four-year course for school librarians is offered by the College in association with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and qualifies for the Higher Diploma of Teaching (Teaching Librarian: Secondary).

Diploma of Teaching (Secondary)

Single subject Part B combined with a first year library course at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Single subject B or C combined with second year library course at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Trained Secondary Teacher's Certificate Two avenues are provided

The time devoted to these subjects will decrease during the year. iii) Other subjects, especially organization of teaching and pedagogical psychology, will gradually develop during the year.

Special encouragement will be given to students to complete studies that relate to both geographical and pedagogical principles, and which can be integrated with studies of the geographical method. Social, political and religious changes will be related to parallel developments in the Western European states.

Chronologically, the subject of the course will be European history in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Assessment is based on written work, including essays, papers and a written exam at the end of the year.

Philosophical Foundations

A survey of some of the philosophical teachings related to education in the writings of some of the great educational thinkers of the past and present will hopefully demonstrate the continuity of educational ideas and raise issues for discussion. In connection with another significant problem an attempt will be made to crystallize the main aspects of the deterministic and indeterministic views. Can it be considered acceptable to say that "at the moment the relationship of the individual with the group is characterized by mass conformity and personal emptiness".

In order to identify some of the current philosophical foundations of these representative educational systems, some important aspects of the development and organization of the individual systems will be discussed. Furthermore, students are required to observe the teaching of subject teachers during designated teaching rounds and in demonstration classes organized at other times. In general, practical teaching is not provided in schools except during teaching rounds and absence due to illness during a teaching round must be covered by a medical certificate.

The work will be evaluated on the fly and, together with short tests during the year, will be taken into account in the final evaluation. A selection from the following unitary subjects will be included: classical dynamics, circuit theory, electronics, electromagnetic theory, optics, relativity, astrophysics and quantum physics. The final grade will be based on the results of these unit tests as well as assignments and practical work throughout the year.

Each student's work is continuously evaluated throughout the year and taken into account in the assessment of the year's results. It is assumed that students have passed a matriculation level math subject. i) Algebra and geometry: sets and their algebra. ii) Calculus: Differentiation and integration with the usual applications. Students must submit two essays and two other reading assignments during the year.

Approximately two hours of reading or preparation per week will be required for the first half of the year in connection with the above studies. A lecture-discussion program combined with workshop sessions for three hours per week for the duration of the course. Evaluation of scientific teaching in relation to the theory of testing as provided in Chapter 3 of the subject "Teaching Organization".

There will be two sections in the course: a) Techniques and problems of teaching chemistry, dealing with demonstrations and presenting practical work at the upper secondary level. An introduction to selected aspects of the geological sciences as applied to secondary school science teaching (forms 1 -4). Linking studies in shorthand and typewriting will explore the application of the Dacomb shorthand system in the middle classroom and the orientation of secretarial procedures and practices to the learning situation.

A course designed to explore ways of encouraging effective speech in the secondary school by creating speech situations in which students will be able to develop the oral skills necessary to communicate freely with their peers. The course will therefore consist of practical experiences and discussion of skills such as interpretive reading, speaking to an audience, improvisation in dialogue, creative discussion.
