Photographs of the field site in which variegated thistle seeds were hand-sown into swards maintained at heights of 0 cm (bare ground), 3 cm, 6 cm, 8 cm and 12 cm. By: a) 17 July, the rosette diameter of thistle plants had increased; b) 4 November (late spring), stem elongation occurred and flowerheads developed;

and c) 5 December, flowerhead production was prolific.
