It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Essentially Dance 2017!
It’s that time of the year again where our Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance Performance) students have the opportunity to get a sense of what a career in the performing arts is all about – performing in a professional environment and being able to connect directly with public audiences.
Not only do they have the wonderful opportunity to learn and perform repertoire from a diverse range of professional choreographers, they work alongside production and design teams from across the performing arts industry.
Situated half-way through their current year of studies, ED17 presents each year group with the challenge of adapting to different dance genres, experiencing varied approaches to choreography, and learning the nuances of the creative process – all important skills to be successful in the real-world. In an opinion piece in The Guardian in March this year, titled Science classes won’t future proof our children. But dance might by Christina Patterson (see https://www.theguardian.com/
commentisfree/2017/mar/30/science-classes-future-children-dance-schools?CMP=twt_gu), it quoted Andreas Schleicher, director for education and skills at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, as saying that engagement in the Arts has been shown to have an impact on IQ and academic performance. In particular dance builds visuo-spatial skills. It literally changes our perception. It teaches us, “what is in front of us and what is behind us”. It literally enables us to vision a future, and in this world of uncertainty we need lots of future-proofing. The article points out skills learnt in the Arts (of which dance is one) provide skills needed for
“innovative” jobs, which according to the OECD, are those – critical thinking, willingness to question, presenting ideas – you learn from the Arts. So for this reason our dance students are on a platform to success.
We are very grateful for the support and assistance of various disciplines and departments across QUT that assist in putting on this show – Drama (Technical Production), QUT Precincts, and the School of Creative Practice. Furthermore, a huge thank you goes to all the choreographers, designers, and the QUT Dance Team without whom this performance season could not be mounted. GLENN HUGHES
Glenn has worked as a Lighting Designer for many companies including the Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland Theatre Companies, Playbox, Victorian Arts Centre, Malthouse, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Sydney Opera House, RealTV, La Boite, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Queensland Ballet and the Melbourne and Sydney Festivals. After training in Adelaide he travelled to London, working initially in the West End and then four years at the National Theatre of Great Britain. He joined the Victorian Arts Centre in 1983 as Head Lighting Technician and subsequently held the positions of Lighting Master (1984-86) and Production Manager (1987-93). He spent a year with Melbourne Theatre Company in 1994 as touring Lighting Designer before joining the Queensland Theatre Company as Production Manager (1995-97). He has continued to work widely as a freelance Lighting Designer since 1998. Recent lighting credits include: It All Begins With Love, Tales of the Underground (Creative Regions), Government Inspector, The Hot L Baltimore, The Man Who Came To Dinner, A Chorus of Disapproval, Essentially Dance 2013/14/15 (QUT), The Carer (Bay St.Productions /MTC), The Glass Menagerie (La Boite), Tall Man (RealTV/La Mama), Half and Half (Jute), Black Electric, Spirit of the Lore, Stolen (ACPA), Kin (GOMA/Malthouse).

JENNIFER ROCHE
Jennifer Roche’s research focus is the creative practice of the contemporary dancer, exploring the specific nuances of this career from multiple perspectives including philosophical approaches, Somatics and narrative enquiry. She has worked extensively as a dancer, with a range of choreographers including Rosemary Butcher, Jodi Melnick, John Jasperse, Yoshiko Chuma and in a work by Dominique Bagouet (Les Carnets Bagouet, France). She was artistic director of Rex Levitates Dance Company (now Liz Roche Company), which she co-founded and was a founder member of Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre. From 2007 to 2011 she was dance advisor to the Arts Council of Ireland. Palgrave Macmillan published her book Multiplicity, Embodiment and the Contemporary Dancer: Moving Identities in 2015. Recent creative projects include Time Over Distance Over Time, performed in Dublin, Sydney and Brisbane in 2016.

This work was first performed in 2008 and later toured to The Guandong Modern Dance Festival in China.
Skinning Memory was choreographed by adapting, modifying and replacing elements taken from the installation space between memory and skin (2005), a collaboration between musician and video artist Christine McCombe, interior designer and architect Dianne Smith and costume designer and choreographer Shaaron Boughen. The 2008 cast, with their qualitative and technical strengths made a unique contribution to this piece of floating memories, which challenges the audience/performer relationship, asking who is viewing whom, when and where?

Inspiration for my piece comes from Oliver Davis’ score; Dance. From musical boxes, to folk dance, Dance embraces an eclectic variety of styles.
As an introductory piece to QUT, for half the cast, I have aimed to create the piece with a fun, challenging and educational mindset. Central to my work is the theme of change, and our propensity to stay within comfort zones.
I want to thank the students for their collaboration, energy and hard work. Rehearsal Director Rachel Pedro for infusing my piece with precision, historical context and Latin styling. And Queensland Ballet Academy for kindly loaning their long tulle tutus.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES
ELISE MAY
Elise May has danced with Expressions Dance Company (EDC) since 2008 and was appointed Assistant to the Artistic Director in 2017. Performance highlights with EDC include When Time Stops, 7 Deadly Sins, The Host, The Red Shoes, Carmen Sweet and R&J. She has worked internationally in Taiwan, U.S.A, South Korea, Switzerland and extensively in China and has choreographed four short works for EDC, including Written on The Body for EDC’s 2017 production of Propel. In 2012 she was awarded the Australian Dance Award for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer’ for R&J. Elise completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) at Queensland University of Technology in 2002 and in 2016 attained a Masters of Arts by Research. Elise is also a dance workshop facilitator and an independent video artist.
STEPHANIE HUTCHISON
Steph Hutchison is a choreographer, performer, artist-researcher and lecturer in dance at QUT. She is an experienced and sought after artist with a background in contemporary dance, improvisation, circus arts, and art technology. Steph has created work for numerous dance technology projects at Motion.Lab involving real-time motion capture systems, robots, haptic, 3D stereoscopic environments, transmedia, and artificially intelligent (AI) performance systems. She worked with Motion.Lab on two Australian Research Council Discovery projects in dance technology, as well as several industry collaborations. With John McCormick, Steph collaborated to create Emergence, real-time motion capture AI performance. She has received commissions from Arts Centre Melbourne, grants from Australia Council and Arts Victoria, and a number of her works have been curated for programs internationally. Steph recently completed her PhD – meta: discourses from dancers inside action machines.
VANESSA MAFE-KEANE
Vanessa Mafe-Keane, was a professional dancer with The Queensland Ballet, Geneva Ballet, Compagnie Noemi Lapzeson and co-founder of an experimental performance group Co M-S-K in Switzerland. Vanessa enjoys a diverse teaching portfolio which covers many aspects of the dance profession including professionals, amateurs and pre-professionals. She is currently an associate lecturer in Dance at QUT where she is also undertaking a PhD researching aspects of choreographic practice in relation to dance scores.

SHAARON BOUGHEN
Shaaron Boughen is highly regarded throughout Australia as a choreographer, teacher, designer, curator and dance critic. Currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at QUT, she was a member of the dance staff for 30 years, including 8 years as Head.
Shaaron continues to be active in the School of Creative Practice as a choreographer, examiner, and mentor to both staff and students. Shaaron was Queensland’s reviewer for The Australian for 16 years and continues to serve on the Arts Queensland Assessment Panel and as a peer reviewer for the Australia Council for the Arts.
MATTHEW LAWRENCE
As a dancer, Matthew had a long and varied career. He was a principal artist in three companies; The Australian Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Queensland Ballet. Guested with Stuttgart Ballet, World Ballet Festival (Japan) and The Royal New Zealand Ballet. He has performed the whole cannon of classical ballets, and a diverse mix of contemporary repertoire; including Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, Twyla Tharp and Hans Van Manen. As a teacher, he has worked with The Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet (Mentor to the Young Artists’ Program), leading training institutions and currently with QUT as an Associate Lecturer. As a writer, he has written for the Dancing Times, and currently as a columnist for Dance Australia. As a choreographer, Matthew has created several works for Birmingham Royal Ballet and Queensland Ballet as part of their Dance Dialogues season. He has also choreographed pieces for training institutions such as Elmhurst School of Dance, Queensland Dance School of Excellence (now Queensland Ballet Academy) and QUT.
NATALIE WEIR
Choreographer Natalie Weir is known internationally for her highly physical partner work, her organic movement style and her touching insight into humanity. Natalie trained at QUT and was a founding member of Expressions Dance Company. She has created over 170 professional works in her 30 year career, including major new works for world class companies such as The Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet, West Australian Ballet, Houston Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, Hong Kong Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. Natalie was resident choreographer for The Australian Ballet and Queensland Ballet and was appointed EDC’s Artistic Director in 2009, fulfilling her dream to build an ensemble of dancers and contribute to the future of Australian dance. Natalie has also been the recipient of both an Australia Council fellowship and the Lord Mayor’s Fellowship. Her signature works with EDC have earned 10 Helpmann Award nominations.

Amazingly few discotheques provide jukeboxes works on the premise of sampling. Sampling is a method and process throughout our creative development and remains incorporated as a trace within the performance aesthetic. Our concept of sampling can be likened to that of music sampling - for us sampling expands out to include fragments of movement, sounds, words, textures, and concepts that are used like Lego blocks. The sampled fragments can be assembled to create something new. In this way, like constructing with Lego our process involves first having a series of pieces (movements attached to alphabetic catalogues) that can be

‘Each of the sins bring different degrees of temptation to man. All the sins are part of any human’s life. It is when they are taken too far that they become deadly. ‘
The solo performed today is the Broken Lust Solo, originally danced by Elise May. It depicts the sin of Lust, broken by man, who hurt the one he loved most.

Throughout the development play has been key in approaching and creating cuts, breaks and grooves between movement. Within the inbetween spaces our sense of play enables us to ride the stratifications between movements, solve the puzzles that emerge from movements that perhaps don’t belong together in order to incorporate and assemble our collective and individual dance.

The 1st years in KDB111 have been working with students from Milton State School to develop a piece entitled Where I Live which is inspired by the children’s experiences of moving through real and virtual urban environments. This project is led by Jennifer Roche in collaboration with Linda Knight from the Faculty of Education. Special thanks to Nicole Peelgrane and Kellie Lazarus at Milton State School.
The 3rd year BFA (Dance) students in KDB305 have created a work that uses “frames” as its starting point.
The students have constructed the movement collectively through a series of choreographic workshops led by Vanessa Mafe-Keane. During the workshops, students were encouraged to explore inclusive approaches to dance-making while still recognising their individual experience.
