RESPONDING TO KEY NATIONAL TRENDS

Furthermore, we are committed to continuous improvement to ensure that we offer excellent learning experiences to our students – wherever they are based and wherever they come from. We are also piloting, in Semester 2, 2018, a new employability initiative, 'Kahurei' (which literally means 'an embellished cloak', a reference to the range of formal and informal skills that students develop during their time at university) , which is characteristic of Massey in its endeavor to recognize and reward the development of 'soft skills' through both formal academic and extracurricular activities.

MASSEY UNIVERSITY PACIFIC LEARNER SUCCESS PLAN

IMPROVING ADULT LITERACY AND NUMERACY

Massey University recognizes the important role that higher education organizations play in improving adult literacy and numeracy. Massey does not see its primary role as improving adult literacy and numeracy and understands that this priority is better addressed through other higher education organisations.

STRENGTHENING RESEARCH-BASED INSTITUTIONS

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Massey actively collaborates with a number of other research organisations, including Crown research institutes such as AgResearch (through the New Zealand Food Safety Science and Research Centre), the Riddet Institute and Hopkirk Research Institute, Plant and Food Research, and the Cawthron Institute, to name but a few. Our efforts in this regard are designed to optimize nationwide capacity and minimize duplication through a number of research projects, particularly in the applied animal and food science areas.

RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT AND SUCCESS

Massey University researchers are also involved in teams led by other institutions that have received funding. Thanks to our own highly regarded publishing company, Massey University Press, we were able to share our research with a wider audience. The press will also provide publishing infrastructure for Te Papa Press following an agreement signed in July; Te Papa Press and Massey University Press books will continue to be published under their respective imprints, but the publishing partnership will benefit both organizations.

OUR FOCUS ON THE PRIMARY INDUSTRIES

The Institute of Food Science and Technology has a new research partnership with Canterbury-based dairy company Synlait. Massey University owns and organizes the awards and is a leading provider of knowledge for food and health innovation in New Zealand. The centre, led by Professor Dorian Garrick, will build world-leading expertise in quantitative breeding, genetics and genomics to benefit New Zealand's agricultural sector.

MÄORI RESEARCH

The center is named in memory of one of the founders of modern animal husbandry, Massey's Professor Alexander Lindsay Rae. Through these relationships, Massey provides a PhD scholarship to one of the iwi members for a PhD related to their environmental management aspirations. The research proposes the development of a 3D printing machine for use in the growing medical transplant industry.

PACIFIC RESEARCH

Dr Tracie Mafile'o, School of Social Work, organized the first Pacific-wide symposium on social work. Held in Fiji in March, the 'Advanced Pacific Social Work Symposium', organized in collaboration with the University of the South Pacific and Western University of Sydney, provided a forum for Pacific social work educators, policy makers and practitioners from across the region to share practices and perspectives for the development of social work education in the South Pacific region. Rae Bainteiti, a School of Social Work student originally from Fiji, was invited by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to be part of a panel in Geneva, Switzerland on human rights, climate change and migrants and persons displaced across international borders.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND COMMERCIALISATION

Massey University and Pacific Adventist University in Papua New Guinea are in the early stages. This is expected to establish the Pacific Adventist University Institute of Alternative Energy as a leader in education in renewable energy systems in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific, ultimately resulting in social, cultural and. Professor Bruce Glavovic, School of People, Environment and Planning, was invited by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to serve as coordinating lead author on Chapter 4: Sea Level Rise and Implications for Low Lying Islands, Coasts and Communities of the Special of the Panel Report on the Ocean and the Cryosphere in a Changing Climate.

SUPPORTING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

GROWING INTERNATIONAL LINKAGES

PAST PERFORMANCE

EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCE COMMITMENTS – 2017

Massey continues to work with other tertiary education organizations in the wider tertiary education system. The university's strategy is to grow in line with the growth of the general and school population in the areas surrounding the university's Albany campus. Since the last investment plan period, Massey has sold part of its Auckland campus and is investing in the development of new facilities.

POST-STUDY OUTCOMES

Massey does not offer the following areas: Levels 4-7 in Tourism Studies, Sports (Coaching, Games, Officials and Instruction), Beauty Therapy, Graphic Arts and Design Studies, Fine Arts and Word and Information Processing. An analysis of Massey University's provision for areas identified with low post-graduate employment outcomes shows that for non-degree (levels 4-7) and degree (level 7), the University already has overall low and declining levels of delivery to the areas. listed above. While there is no data available on post-graduate outcomes from the New Zealand Standard Classification of Education (NZSCED), overall the University shows post-graduate outcomes that are significantly higher than those of the university sector for non-degrees (49.9 percent of employed versus the sector 39.6 percent in 2014-15) and higher than the sector for degree level (73.6 percent employed versus 71.2 percent for the sector).

QUALITY ASSURANCE REVIEW

The University was pleased to receive recognition from the audit panel for the significant development and good work done in these areas. Some recommendations require long-term planning and activities involving a wide cross-section of the University. The academic audit is a snapshot of the University at a particular point in time, looking at the policies, processes and practices in place at that time.

OTHER MARKERS OF QUALITY OF PROVISION

They confirmed the confirmations of the audit committee that the university has identified where improvements are needed, that measures have been taken and the committee believes that the measure will be effective when it is completed. Activities and projects have been launched for all recommendations and significant progress has been made on some. Universities are evolving and student needs, strategic priorities and market influences influence how the university operates and the services that are needed and provided.

INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATIONS

Some activities to address the recommendations, such as grading practices, have been completed and benefits are now being realized. Areas such as benchmarking and equivalence, given the multi-campus nature of Massey University, are expected to take some time to complete. Monitoring shared services and the Academic Stability model are ongoing activities that may evolve over time.

RANKINGS AND RATINGS

The Shanghai Jiao Tong Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017 ranked two areas in the top 50; veterinary sciences 35th in the world, and food science and technology 45th in the world. It also placed Massey Business School's finance program in the top 150 finance programs globally, the highest for a New Zealand university.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Since the strategy was launched in 2017, we have begun to examine how our organization functions and how to best prepare ourselves for a dynamic and uncertain future. Our aim throughout the new strategy is to ensure that Massey remains sustainable and known. We have made significant progress in improving our business and financial processes and have already started investing in our IT systems in an effort to build efficiency and consistency across the business.

TRANSFORMING MASSEY

Although our strategy is still new to us, significant progress has already been made in achieving our goals. The strategy will serve as a roadmap for years to come, ensuring that the university can continue to be a world-leading university connected to community and business.

In this vein, the University continued to promote its Environmental Sustainability Strategic Plan with the circulation of the draft plan to staff and students for consultation in 2017. For example, the Lives and Afterlives of Plastic conference in 2017 was hosted entirely online by Massey University's Political Ecology Research Center during June and July. An example of this was the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples conference, jointly hosted by Massey University's Global Center for Indigenous Leadership and the New Zealand Human Rights Commission.
