Part 3 – Travel, Conference or Scientific Exchange Report

1. A brief description of the purpose of the travel.

The purpose of this travel was for Dr Tom Walsh and Dr Wee Tek Tay to attend the Bt technical panel meeting and hold discussions with Bayer.

2. What were the:

a) major findings and outcomes b) other highlights

We discussed the Bollgard III RMP and potential issues associated with the easing of the RMP (see attached meeting notes). We also discussed the work needed for Bayer to be able to provide information to the industry about their products that may enter the Australia market.

At a separate meeting we were also able to meet up with Ryan Kurtz from Cotton Incorporated in the USA and we discussed potentially internationalising some of the work on Bt resistance.

The CRDC is also interested in following up closer collaborations with international partners.

In a separate meeting we were able to discuss insect pests with relevance to biosecurity with Nicola Cottee from Cotton Australia.

CRDC in Narrabri. Attending were the Bt technical panel, representatives from Bayer Crop Sciences, the CRDC and Cotton Australia. Susan Maas, Sally Ceeney (CRDC), Paul Grundy (QDAF), Lisa Bird (NSW DPI), Sharon Downes, Tek Tay, Tom Walsh, Mary Whitehouse, Colin Tann, Gary Fitt, Nancy Schellhorn (via phone) (CSIRO), Peter Gregg (UNE), Nicola Cottee (Cotton Australia).

4. a) Are there any potential areas worth following up as a result of the travel?

I will follow-up on potential research with Bayer to provide information on Bayer’s products to the Australian Cotton Industry.
