Keilor will host the 2016 Champion of Champions

Bob Duddington, Maureen Sutton and Mark Casey show their excitement about the big announcement for hosting the

“Champion of Champions” at Keilor Bowls Club in October.

The winner is “Keilor”

Excitement and

Anticipation

Peter Livy our Chairperson said we are excited and very proud that we have been chosen to host this prestigious event.

Special thanks to Bob Dud- dington who spent hours on our submission, which was described by Bowls Victoria Operations Manager as

“extremely professional”.

We have 7 months to organ- ize everything and will need the help of members as we will need many volunteers to perform all the many tasks required.

A great opportunity to show once again what Keilor Bowl- ing Club can do.

For the Club it’s a win, win situation.

Keilor Bowls Club has been appointed as host venue for the 2016 Bowls Aus- tralia Champion of Champions to be conducted from October 5 to 7.

Ten Victorian clubs put forward proposals to conduct the event and Keilor Bowls Club were the successful applicant.

Bowls Australia’s events and competition manager Mark Casey met with Keilor BC executive secretary Bob Duddington and bowls section president Maureen Sutton last week for an inspection of the facilities.

Casey, a current Australian representative, is a former Keilor BC player himself.

Bowls Victoria thanks the other nine Clubs for providing an expression of interest to host this major event on the Bowls Australia event calendar and wishes Keilor BC all the best with their planning and delivery of what promises to be a great event.

The State and Territory male and female winners of the respective Champion of Champions in singles will contest this event over the three days in October to de- termine the eventual National Champions.

They will then go on to represent Australia in the World Champion of Champions event to be conducted in November at Helensvale BC on the Gold Coast.

The success of this prestigious event will come down to lots of hard work and co-

operation from all the members of the Keilor Bowling Club well before October 5.

Wishing our cook a safe holiday Mick and Glenda Mullen are now in Bali and enjoying the exotic dishes that the locals serve up.

Allan Krell, Leoni and Iggy Wierzbowski wish Mick all the best and we will see them back in the kitchen soon.

Mick has been spending time in his favourite Tattoo Par- lor where he is getting running repairs to the one on his

arm, according to the hot line. Mick’s been very busy.

Last Sunday week, with the very much appreciated support of John Hamilton we staged the “Bowlers Arm” tournament.

We had 14 teams entered unfortunately one team failed to turn up. The situation was put to all present and as a result a mystery rink was made up of bowlers who were there as spectators.

The match Committee certainly appreciated this decision and play got underway at the advertised starting time. To make this tournament possi- ble a big thank you to Rex Webb and Allen Krell who spent many hours and telephone calls organising teams etc.

Once again the catering was superbly done by the ladies in the kitchen --- Helen Duddington, Dianne Marshall, Julie Isergin, Lorraine Henne- ken, Maureen Sutton, also I must mention the enormous help “Jenny”

from Shepparton was. Jenny placed out all the table cloths, set the tables and assisted in the bring out of the sweets and not only that assisted in bringing the plates etc. to the kitchen, well done Jenny your help was very much appreciated (we have a place for you in our club any time you wish).

Also to our BBQ chefs Allen Marshall, Darren Cox and Bob Dudding- ton, a job very well done Nick Isergin served well as Umpire. While Julie Copal did the Bar.

Winners on the day were Jim Teal and team runners up “Mystery Team”

Third was the team from Melton and the Best Game went to John Hamil- ton and team .

All helping ladies were presented with a rose by Bob Duddington All things considered a very enjoyable day was had by all.

Bowlers Arm Tournament

Keilor Midweek Side 3 Players You now have an excellent opportunity of playing Finals

in this competition John Hamilton is back home and being

looked after by his darling wife Joy.

John hopes to be able to pop in on Friday Tommy Lingford

telling

Pat Del Re

about

going to Heidelberg Golf last Tuesday when he was told that a fellow called “Puppy” was look- ing for him, as he use to play golf with Tommy a long time ago.

When they caught up “Puppy” sternly said

“You’re not Tom Lingford, he is a much bigger man!”

As it turned out he was referring not to our Tommy but his dad, also known as Tom.

All this took place back in 1956 and Tommy said if my father had still been alive be would around 123 years old.

Our Tommy and “Puppy” are the same age and of course they both still play bowls.

THE LEADER NEWSPAPER recently did a one on one insight interview with Tommy regarding his sporting life in particular the days at the Keilor Bowling Club.

This is a must read for all who will be lucky enough to find a copy of the paper!!

Ron Brodtman reports that his cancer treatment is all good. He is going to go under the knife at Peter McCallum on the 29th to drain the lymph

nodes and will be back playing bowls soon after. We wish him well.

More than two dozen Keilor bowlers with friends and family were entertained at the Edinburgh Tattoo..

Thanks to Maureen Sutton, who pre-purchased twenty tickets, most went Saturday night and not only enjoyed sitting with one another, the seating at the front made for the best viewing.

Maureen is now lining up a popular visit to the City Law Courts that Peter Kistler is kindly supervising.

At the present time the num- bers are at the maximum but if there are late withdrawals you may be lucky to fill the vacancies.

Midweek Pennant was a mixed bag for Keilor BC in R.16.

Our No. 1 Side played Williamstown at home and was successful with Leo Mobilio’s rink of Rae Knowles, Jennifer

Knight and Barry Dean being the stars for the day, winning 29-10 (+19). Lorraine Henneken’s rink of Lyn Martin, June McInerney and Margaret Bromley had a hard fought win 24-23 (+1) and Max Knight’s rink fought back yet again after lunch to lose by only 2 shots. An overall win of +18 which puts this side back to second place on the ladder with two games to go.

Our second side travelled to Heidelberg Golf and had a great win 72-52 mostly due to Cecile’s rink of Pat Black,

Mary Irwin and Peter Fisher’s great win of 32-11 (+21). Leonie’s rink of Joy Harmer, Lorraine Reddish and Norma Prendergast fought hard and won by 1 shot 24-23. Tom Linford’s rink went down by two shots. 72 – 52 (+20).

Our third side also played at Keilor against Buckley Park suffering a very narrow loss of two shots. Gloria Nor-

man’s rink went down 17-22 (-5). Cyd Wilson’s rink of Allen Krell, Nick Isergin and Joan Wilson – yes Joan was back – winning by two shots and Gino Persico’s rink of Alan Sutton, Ken McLeod and Joyce Morris winning a hard fought game by 1 shot 19-18. 53-55 (-2).

A big thank you to those players who filled in at short notice to enable us to fill our third side.

LADIES; THE ENGINE ROOM OF OUR CLUB

Boys in Blue

We welcomed our local Police to the Club last Wed., for their annual get together which they all look forward to.

Here is what they had to eat as

they consumed a few “frothies.”

Sushi, Rice Paper Rolls, Party Pies/

Sausage Rolls, Rice and Curry, Sand wiches, Tandoori Chicken Sticks, Chicken Schnitzels, Fruit Sticks, Mango Tofu, China Seed Pudding, Chocolate Mousse, Vanilla Pensa- cola with strawberries, Mini Pizza’s, Pumpkin Bites, Mini Dim Sims and Spring Rolls.

There was a huge variety but we had to cater for Vegetarians and Vegans.

Well done by all the ladies in the kitchen, so much time went into the preparation.

PS: we will be looking for new Pro- vidores next season as Helen and Dianne step down.

WINNER’S OF THE BOWLING ARM TOURNAMENT

Some of the ladies that we are so lucky to have driving our club.

MARILYN MONROE will be appearing at the Bendigo Art Centre soon and there are quite a few people interested in seeing her.

Pat and Allen Black have a list of people who would like to take the train up and make a day of it. Maybe lunch at the Shamrock Hotel.

Put your name on their list.

From left to right , Jim Teal, Rex Webb and Peter Charlmers.

Jim Teal and Peter Charlmers are both

from Buckley Park Bowls Club.

Footy Tipping

Footy is just around the corner and that means you will soon have to start think- ing about how to win this years Keilor Bowls Footy Tipping Competition.

Bob Scash has handed the “ball” over to Rob Nyhus to kick the season off.

Bob and his wife Marj., will be over in New Zealand for 2 months and unable to set the system in motion.

Those who are interested will soon be asked to put their name on a sheet at the front bar.

Footy Tipping provides lots of interest par- ticularly for those who don’t head north for the winter.

And the cost to be a participant is around $1 a week.

Read more about it in the next newsletter.

Rob Nyhus is new to the procedure of how the Tipping System works but will have our ever reliable Jimmy Knowles to look over his shoulder.

The start of the season is not far away so please have a chat to Rob Nyhus as soon as possible if you are interested.

Brad Teal has always been a true supporter of local and AFL football.

He is also a sponsor of the Keilor Bowls Club. Above is a poster Brad and his ever supportive staff posed for a number of years ago. You may be able to recognize a few familiar faces: eg Connie Dragovic who was at our club on the All Stars Day, and Nick Isergin is also in it.

ROUND 15 OF MIDWEEK PENNANT

Round 15 of Midweek Pennant was somewhat disappointing.

Side 1 played at Maribyrnong Park and Max Knight’s rink went down 21 – 23 after a magnificent fight back after the lunch break. Leo Mobilio’s rink went down 13 – 33 and was out bowled on the day. Lorraine Henneken’s rink of Lyn Martin – 3, Margaret Bromley – 2 and Iggy Wierzbowski L, won 23 – 16. Score of 57 – 72 (-15). This side is still hanging onto 3rd. position on the ladder.

The 2nd Side played Kingsbury 3 at Keilor with June McInerneys rink of Tom Lingford – 3, Margaret Hutton 2 and Fred Donaldson – L, winning 27 – 20 Leonie Wierzbowskis rink lost by 6 and Cecile Hechts rink lost by 2. (65 – 66). Such a close game. This Side is 5th. On the ladder with every game of vital importance if they are to gain a position in the top 4.

The 3rd. Side travelled to Altona with Joy Hamiltons rink losing 12 – 20, Gino Persicos rink losing 16 – 34 and Cyd Wil- sons rink of Allan Krell – 3, Nick Isergin – 2nd. and Joyce Morris – L winning 28 – 17. Unfortunately not enough to bring the Side home. This Side is holding 4th position on the ladder and will need to keep winning to hold their position.

Good bowling to all in the last 3 rounds of the season.

The Selectors have used the Bowls Victoria Rules for Competition as their guide for the season, as they will continue to do in the coming weeks. They would like to draw players attention to the following:-

Rule 9.1.4 Sides will be filled by available players in descending order of ability.

Rules 9.1.7/9.1.8 & 9.1.9 Will be the Bowls Victoria Guidelines that will be used for selecting Sides/Teams should any of our Sides reach the Finals

Unfortunately we have some players who have withdrawn for the rest of the season due to ill health. Also there are several going on holidays during the period of the finals. This makes selection difficult but we shall do our best and feel sure that you the players will give the remaining games your all. Good luck in the business end of the season.— Midweek Selectors

STEVE MARTIN has made a request for another volunteer to work behind the bar. It only

involves once a month — and the job is interesting as well as being very helpful.
