HORSE LOSSES IN WEST KIMBERLEY

Reports of deaths of horses occurring over a long period on West Kimberley stations led to some preliminary investigations in June by officers of the Animal Division of the Department of Agriculture, but few animals were seen showing

symptoms and it was difficult to obtain reliable case-histories.

The Chief Veterinary Surgeon (Mr. C. R. Toop) said that a further investigation was planned to commence at the end of the wet season and a botanical survey would be made of the affected areas.

The losses had occurred on several properties located on the south side of the Pitzroy River between Pitzroy Crossing and Luluigui. Although it was believed that

"Kimberley Horse Disease" was responsible for a proportion of the deaths, the evidence suggested t h a t other factors may have been responsible.

A co-operative investigation recently carried out by the C.S.I.R.O., West Aus- tralian Department of Agriculture and the Northern Territory Administration indicated t h a t Kimberley Horse Disease resulted from the ingestion of the wedge - leaved rattlepod (Crotalaria retusa), a plant which grows mainly on the river frontage country. Mortalities had occurred among horses which had not been running on the frontage country, and among others which had not had access to Crotalaria retusa for some considerable time. These facts, together with reports of symptoms differing from those of Kimberley Horse Disease appeared to warrant further investigation.
