Prep – Year 9

Alternative formats for 2010 National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests

Purpose

To advise principals of the procedure for requesting Braille and large print materials for the 2010 NAPLAN tests for students with special needs.

Background

Braille and large print testbooks and stimulus materials are available for students who normally use these educational adjustments for learning and assessment.

For 2010, principals must submit a Request for Braille or Large print form for each student in their school requiring these materials.

In the past, advisory visiting teachers provided the QSA with the names of Queensland students who required test materials in alternative formats. The decision to change this procedure was made in consultation with staff at the Disability Services Support Unit. All schools now have the opportunity to order alternative format materials within the designated timelines.

Information

Special provisions may be made to maximise student access to the NAPLAN tests. These special provisions should reflect the specific educational adjustments and support provided in the classroom for students to learn or to demonstrate what they know and can do. The use of Braille or large print

materials for the NAPLAN tests is an acceptable special provision.

Before granting any special provisions, the principal is required to consult with a student's

parents/carers and the specialist and support staff who have responsibility for the student's educational program. The record of this consultation must be documented and kept at the school, using the

Application for variation to student participation form, in addition to submitting the Request for Braille or Large print.

What you need to do

Principals must complete a Request for Braille or Large print form for each student requiring testbooks in these formats. The form is available for download from the QSA website: <www.qsa.qld.edu.au>

select Prep–Year 9 > NAPLAN (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9) > Test preparation and administration > Forms.

All requests must be submitted by Friday 26 February.
