MAYORAL MINUTE NO. 5/2017
FUNDING OF NORWEST BOULEVARD AND LEXINGTON DRIVE INTERSECTION
23 MAY 2017 Councillors,
On 13 December 2016 we considered a report concerning the traffic congestion issue at the Norwest Boulevard and Lexington Drive intersection, and we resolved as follows:
The RMS be advised that Council will provide a maximum of $0.5M towards the design and implementation of an interim signal treatment for the intersection of Lexington Ave and Norwest Boulevard.
I am pleased to advise that the RMS has accepted Councils offer of $500,000 from our Developer Contribution Funds which will now be used to fund the interim intersection treatment on Norwest Boulevard at Lexington Drive.
The project will install vehicle activated traffic lights on the westbound and northbound approach to the roundabout, triggered by queued vehicles in the eastbound lanes coming from the M7 and Old Windsor Rd. The traffic lights will help improve eastbound traffic flow along Norwest Boulevard, particularly in the morning peak period.
The work has just commenced and will be completed in stages with an estimated completion by Friday 30 June 2017 - weather permitting.
We acknowledge that this is a ‘stop gap’ measure to address the massive delays for workers trying to get into the Business Park each morning, and we know that the ultimate solution, replacing the entire roundabout with a signalised intersection that will deal with traffic growth and pedestrian safety, is needed in the very near future.
MOTION: Accordingly I move that:
1. This Mayoral Minute be received.
2. Council write to the Roads and Maritime Services and the Local Member, David Elliott MP thanking them for this interim step and ask that work begin as soon as possible to design the ultimate intersection treatment so that is ‘shovel ready’ for when funds are available.
Councillor Yvonne Keane MAYOR
