MAYORAL MINUTE NO 3/2020

VALE HAROLD JOHN BENYON OAM 28 APRIL 2020

Councillors,

It is with great sadness that I speak of the passing of local Kenthurst icon, Harold John Benyon OAM.

There are many words that describe this wonderful man, like “kind”, “generous”, “determined”,

“outgoing”, “friendly” and so much more. But for this special Mayoral Minute, I think it would be best to go by the name he loved to be called, and that simply is John.

John was a highly respected businessman and volunteer, who dedicated his life to helping others and the community he loved so dearly. He went above and beyond the call of duty to contribute to his Kenthurst neighbourhood. Nothing was ever an issue, and he exceeded expectations each and every single time.

As a volunteer, John juggled many roles, including his imperative work with the Rotary Club of Kenthurst, which he served as a long-term member since 1975. He was also involved in the coordination of local Australia Day flag raising ceremonies and ANZAC Day commemorations, which were both well attended. John was also imperative in establishing a Monument of Remembrance and transforming a local Scouts Hall into a Men’s Shed, both located in Kenthurst.

Apart from this, John worked incredibly hard to ensure the preservation and maintenance of heritage listed buildings, including the Kenthurst Literary Institute Hall. To add to this, he kept the Kenthurst Swimming Pool fully maintained so that it could be enjoyed by others, especially in the warm summer months, as well as helping to organise what is now known as the “Benyon’s Bump” at the school crossing on Kenthurst Road. This project was led by John to protect school children as they crossed this rural stretch of road.

John was unselfish with his time and made sure he was available to help others. In particular, John ensured he was free on a Saturday to mentor those completing weekend detention with the Department Of Corrective Services. While coordinating and overseeing these activities, he would provide convicted offenders with invaluable advice and guidance to support them through this particular period and beyond.

Although John is no longer here, physically, his spirit lives on through his work at John Benyon Rotary Park, which is fittingly named after him. John initiated improvements to be made in this Park, including barbecues, footpaths, seating, water bubblers, tables and benches, a basketball court and much more. He loved this local community facility and it’s thanks to him that we have this designated space for residents and visitors to the area to make their own special memories.

While this is just a snapshot of his incredible work, it’s clear to see why John was honoured with a Medal (OAM) of The Order of Australia in the General Division in 2014. He was also named Hills Shire Council Citizen of the Year in 2006 and Person of the Year at the Graphic Arts Institute in 1987.

Vale John. You will be immensely missed, but never forgotten.

Accordingly I move that:

MOTION:

1. This Mayoral Minute be received;

2. A minute’s silence be observed.
