ABSTRACT

Two experiments , in which ene rgy and p ro tein me tab o l ism and g rowth we re measured , investigated the effe c ts of in fe c t ion with the no dular wo rm Oesophagos tomum den tatum on growing pigs .

In the first experimen t , e ight gilts were randomly ass igned to one o f two infect ion t rea tmen ts ( infected o r uninfec ted) . Each

infe c t ion t reatment was then randomly ass igne d to one o f two planes o f nut rition (high-plane o r low-plane) . Those being infe c t ed we re dosed o ra l ly at 20 kg l iveweight with 80 ,000 O . dentatum thi rd s tage larvae . Energy and nitro gen b alances wer e repea te d serially three times on each anima l . Two open-circuit calo rime ters were use d , wi th the d i f ferent t reatments b eing dis t r ib uted equally to each o f these .

O . dentatum eggs appeared in the faeces 1 9 -2 6 days after

adminis t ration o f the larval dos e , inc reased to a maximum concentration ranging b e tween 4 ,4 75 and 1 8,2 75 eggs per g ram (epg) faeces after 7 weeks and fell to concentrations ranging between 250 and 1 1,775 epg faeces at slaughter . Al l uninfe cted animals remained wo rm- free .

Heat p roduction (HP) and metabol izab l e energy in take (ME) were . 1 1 . h 0.66 ( 0.66)

propo r t 1ona to ivewe1g t LW . Therefore Lw0 ·66 was used as the b ase to reduce variab il i ty in the data caus ed by variat ion in l iveweigh t (LW) .

The re were no s igni ficant differences b e tween infe c ted and unin fec ted pigs fo r in take , dige s t ib ility , me tabolizab i l ity o r re tention o f energy and nitro gen .

In the second experiment , twenty-eigh t boars and g i l ts were ass igned to one of two infection treatments ( infected or uninfected) . Thos e b eing infec ted were dosed at 20 kg liveweight with 80 ,000 O . dentatum third s tage larvae . All pigs were individual ly fed once daily on the same feeding scale . They were weighed weekly and

s laughtered at app roximately 80 kg l iveweigh t and the diges tive t racts r ecovered .

O . dentatum eggs appeared in the faeces at approxima tely 3 weeks pos t-inf ec tion , ros e to a maximum concentration ranging b e tween 2,825

and 3 6,250 ( average 1 9 ,90 7) epg faeces at 6- 13 weeks and then decl ined to b e tween SO and 25,825 ( average 1 1 ,0 60 ) epg fresh faeces at s laugh ter . All uninfected animals remained eg&--f.ree

Average worm numbers re cove red after slaugh ter were 4,255 per p i g f rom infected animals . No worms were recove red from uninfec ted p igs .

No differences were found b e tween infec ted and uninfected p igs for growth or carcass characteri s t i c s .
