Appreciable human pest species in the NT EXPLANATION

1. Lee, D.J., Hicks, M.M., Griffiths, M., Russell, R. C., and Marks, E.N. (1980)

The Culicidae of the Australasian Region. Volume 1 - 12. Entomology Monograph No 2.

Commonwealth Institute of Health (incorporating the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine) and the University of Sydney. AGPS, 217 pp.

2. O'Gower, A. K. (1958) "The Mosquitoes of North Western Australia. Serv. Publs. SPHTM, 7: 46pp.

3. Medical Entomology, NT Department of Health and Families. 1974 - 2009.

4. Possible misidentification by G.F Hill (1925a in Lee et al 1987, Vol. 5) - no further records from NT or Australia.

5. Now considered to be male of Aedes (nr Levua) daliensis.

6. Tentative identification by E. N. Marks - examination of further specimens required for confirmation.

7. Was previously Aedes purpureus.

8. Records for NT Health are of imported occurrences. Records from O'Gower are probably

misidentifications (Ae. katherinensis was differentiated from Ae. scutellaris in Woodhill 1949, who also states that no members of the Scutellaris group have been recorded in Aust. prior to 1944). Not presently established anywhere in the NT - Collected as importations only.

9. Only record from O'Gower from Katherine but identification not verified & specimen not available.

10. Debenham et. al., 1971 (Biting collection in Gove) - possibly relates to another species.

11. E. N. Marks (1967), Mosquitoes in Australia's arid zone. Aust.Nat.Hist. 15 (10). Collections in Central Aust. needed for verification.

12. Identification need to be verified - not likely to be present in the NT.

13. First probable occurence in NT in 1996. Whelan et al Arbovirus Research in Australia 2001.

14. Culicidae of the Aust. "(possibly = Culex (Culex) species 32)".

15. Has not been confirmed in the NT.

(6)

16. Known from one specimen only from NT (Port Keats). Sent to EN Marks.

17. Probably incorrect identification - should be deleted.

18. Collection prior to 1956 when it was established. Collections after 1974 are importations or brief establishments from overseas or Qld that have been eliminated.

19. Tentative id by E.N. Marks. To distinguish between adult Cx. sp 32, more reared specimens are needed for verification. Recent NT records (from 2000) are probably mostly consistent with those previously identified by DoH as Cx. sp 32. Culex sp 32, Cx. sp 92 and Cx. sp nr vishnui have been grouped to cope with the difficulties of separating the possible 2 or 3 species.

20. Keyed using Culicidae of the Aust. Vol. 2 1982, and conforms to descriptions of the female adult in E.N.

Marks's 1962 "A revision of the subgenus Chaetocruiomya Theobold (Diptera: Culicidae)".

21. Separated morphologically from Ae. (Mac) sp 76 and Ae. (Mac) sp 121 in 2009, having closer resemblence to Ae. (Mac) sp 121 (entirely separate species indicated by DNA analysis 2010).

22. Recorded recently in Darwin urban in 2010 by NT Health. Previous record in Darwin in 1922 unpublished (in O'Gower, A. K. (1958)).

23. Recorded recently in Darwin urban in 2011 by NT Health. No previous record in Australia. Identification as Cx. cornutus is tentative and further specimens are required to verify that the collections are

Cx. cornutus and not Cx. sinensis.
