Maningrida is an Aboriginal settlement situated at the mouth of the Liverpool River some 370 kilometres east of Darwin.
The settlement has about 700 people which is governed by a Town Council. The principle leader being Mr Joseph Mangudja, President, and Mr Wally Juttner, Town Clerk.
The purpose of the survey was to locate and map important mos qui to breeding sites and to conduct a container survey for Aedes aegypti.
METHOD
Catches of adult mosquitoes using the man biting method near to the residential area was limited, due to intermittent rain.
CO2 baited light traps were positioned in and near the settlement to capture adult mosquitoes in an effort to determine numbers and species. The light traps were started at sun down and collected again shortly after first light the following morning.
A container survey was conducted in yards and around the dwellings of the settlement. The results of which are shown on Table 1.
A search for possible breeding sites of the mos qui to Anopheles farauti was undertaken in areas in close proximity to the settle- lST ment, together with the collection of other species of mosquito
72 larvae. The results are shown on Table 2.
2
RESULTS
Weather conditions hampered the survey both during the day and at night. Intermittent rain fell for the duration of the visit.
Man biting catches revealed the presence of eight (8) different species, Culex annulirostris being the predominant species.
Table 3.
The co2 baited light traps captured seventeen ( 17) different species, which have been listed on Table 4A of this report.
Culex annulirostris again proved to be the predominant species, followed by Culex sitiens.
The incandescent light trap, fell to the ground during the night when the tree branch suspending the trap broke off. The trap motor was still running at the time of collection, however, a portion of the catch was damaged by rain. See Table 4B.
Larval collections from containers within the settlement was to determine whether Aedes aegypti was present. As seen by the results Ae aegypti was not found. Table 1 shows Culex quinque- fasciatus the predominant species at the time.
Because of the rain i t was difficult to determine the extent of the tidal water influence, thus eliminating any possibility of finding the breeding sites for Anopheles far au ti the vector of malaria. This also applies, for not finding Aedes vigilax.
The CO2 baited light traps, placed at selected sites around Maningrida proved to be the most reliable method of collecting mosquito species in numbers.
The man biting method revealed only eight (8) species in comparison to the co2 baited light traps 17 species. The predominant species of mosquitoes captured was Culex annulirostris, the vector of Australian Encephalitis, whilst Culex sitiens which breeds along salt influenced marshes, was the next highest in number. Anopheles far au ti was the highest . in number of the Anopheles species.

Larval breeding sites were difficult to find, due to the amount of rainfall at the time. However, the sites containing larvae are marked on the area map.
Rainfall recorded for the period 3':·3. 81 - 6. 3. 81 was 258 mm and for the ten days of March 1981 4984 mm.
There were containers.
