MOSQUITO CONTROL - OTHER AREAS

MOSQUITO SURVEY - BATCHELOR - AUGUST 19-20 1980

INTRODUCTION

A dry season mosquito survey was carried out at Batchelor Township on August 19 and 20 1980 by officers of the Medical Entomology Section Darwin.

Previous surveys have been conducted at Batchelor at the beginning and end of the wet season, however this is the first dry season survey recorded in that area.

Collection methods used were standard with the inclusion of CO2 light traps.

These results have been included on Appendage I.

RESULTS

There were ( 29) residential blocks searched for containers, to ascertain whether there were any container breeding mosquitoes, (10) residences had (18) containers, (11) of which were empty and (7) contained water. There was only one container breeding larvae. It is mentioned that animal drinking water containers was included in the count. The other containers holding water were most likely filled by garden sprinklers, as there has not been any rain for three months.

On Block No. 116 Kirra Crescent is a concrete box for the inspection of sewage flow. This box has a broken lid and is harbouring adult mosquitoes, however, this is of no consequence as the effluent flow is too rapid to allow mosqitoes to breed there. The flow of sewage from the eastern part of the town, passes through this inspection box enroute to the Imhoff tank. There is ( 3) of these concrete inspection boxes along the pipeline and it is between the last of these and the Imhoff tank where a blockage has interrupted the flow. The pressure build up caused by the blockage has partly disloged the cover from the top of the inspection box, allowing effluent to spill on to the ground. Contractors working in the area have constructed a trench about 10 metres long adjacent to the inspection box to receive this effluent flow.

The Imhoff tank, which is situated about 200 metres away from the nearest residence is inoperative because of the blockage as previously mentioned, however, when the system w:as operative a fairly large trench about 8 metres in length was used, to receive discharge from the Imoff tank, for absorbtion and evaporation.

It is within this trench that large number of mosquito larv~e Culex fatigans are present, and is undoubtably the major source of mosquito breeding in that area.

The Town Manager was advised of the situation and it was suggested that a small amount of diesel oil be placed on top of the water in the trench as an interim control measure.

The western side of the township has .. _been connected to a new sewage line which conveys all waste matter to the new sewage ponds, approximately 1 klm south of the town (see sketch map).

The rubbish tip was examined and it was noted that all wet garbage is covered and dry garbage is burnt and covered with soil regularly .

The new sewage ponds on Meneling Station Road is partially in operation, receiving effluent from the western half of the town only at this stage. The concrete retaining walls on each of the two primary ponds extend only half way down to the bottom of the ponds at a 45° angle where as the secondary pond which is very much larger has concrete for the full depth of the pond, about 2 metres.

Discharge from the secondard pond into a drain running in a southernly direction into a shallow gully which is currently vegetated will be a new breeding site for mosquitoes if the discharge is permitted to the pool.

A man biting and resting collection of adult mosquitoes as well as a larval collection was made at Coomalie Creek on the Batchelor Road, the results are included on Appendage I.
