"-^ for registration. I n addition one o a t variety, accepted for registration in 1951,.
is described i n this Journal for t h e first time.
P a r t i c u l a r s of these varieties as supplied to t h e Registrar a r e as follows:—
SHERPA: T h e wheat cross G h u r k a x Amity was m a d e by A. R. Raw a t Dookie Agricultural College, Victoria; subsequent selection also took place a t t h e College.
T h e h e a d is white, square, erect, partly bearded a n d n o n - s h a t t e r i n g . The grain is white, round a n d starchy. T h e baking quality is described as being slightly superior t o t h a t of t h e principal wheat varieties grown in Victoria. I t is four days later m a t u r i n g t h a n Insignia, t h e period of m a t u r i t y being early to m i d - season. T h e s t r a w is short t o medium in height, strong a n d s t a n d s well. Susceptible to rust, b u t r e s i s t a n t to flag smut.
BOVAH: An o a t variety obtained from t h e crosses Bond x Victoria x Hajira, made by R. E. Soutter of t h e Queensland De- p a r t m e n t of Agriculture and Stock; subse- q u e n t selection w a s carried out a t t h e Regional Experiment Station, Hermitage.
T h e panicle is equilateral and erect with s t r o n g b r a n c h e s . T h e straw-coloured grain, medium in length, is of poor quality a n d h a s a fine awn. The straw is coarse, yellow a n d stout a n d of medium height;
m a t u r i t y is mid-season a n d it flowers 11 days earlier t h a n Algerian. I t is resistant t o crown rust a n d Helminthosporium blight u n d e r field conditions, b u t is sus- ceptible t o stem rust. I t is liable to s h a t - ter, however, i t is intended solely a s a grazing variety. I t s recommendation for t h i s purpose is i t s possession of crown rust resistance unassociated with susceptibility t o Victoria blight. I n addition it has been
tested a n d proved suitable under field grazing conditions.
ACACIA: Although accepted for registra- tion in 1951, this oat variety h a s not yet been described in this Journal.
The crosses (Victoria x Richland) x Algerian x Fulghum were made by S. L.
Macindoe, a t t h e New England Experiment Station, Glen Innes, New South Wales;
subsequent selection also was carried o u t at t h a t station.
The panicle is equilateral and erect with weak branches. The brown coloured grain,.
medium in length, is plump a n d h a s a fine awn. The straw is fine, yellow, stout and is medium to short in height; m a t u r i t y is late, being six days later t h a n Algerian.
It is highly resistant to smut, but i s moderately susceptible to leaf rust a n d susceptible to stem rust, race 8.
It is suitable for grain a n d for grazing, in these characteristics it is reported a s being superior to Algerian.
VENTNOR: This flax variety was o b - tained from t h e crosses [ (Saginaw x Ottawa) C.I.687 x Norfolk Earl]1 x Norfolk Earl; made by A. T. Pugsley a t t h e Waite- Agricultural Research Institute, South Australia; subsequent selection taking place a t t h e same locality.
