EVOLUTION SEMIGROUP APPROACH

Abstract. Let R+ be the set of all non-negative real numbers and U = {U(t, s) :ts0}be a strongly continuous and exponentially bounded evo- lution family of bounded linear operators acting on a Banach spaceX. Let ϕ:R+R+be a non-decreasing function such thatϕ(t)>0 for allt >0.

We prove that if there existsMϕ>0 such that sup

ϕ(kU(t, s)xk)dt=Mϕ<∞, for allxX, kxk ≤1, thenUis uniformly exponentially stable. Forϕcontinuous, this result is due to S. Rolewicz.

1. Introduction

LetX be a real or complex Banach space and L(X) the Banach algebra of all linear and bounded operators onX. LetT={T(t) :t≥0} ⊂L(X) be a strongly continuous semigroup onX andω0(T) = lim

t→∞

ln(kT(t)k)

t be its growth bound. The Datko-Pazy theorem ([1], [2]) states thatω0(T)<0 if and only if for allx∈X the mapst7−→ kT(t)xkbelongs toLp(R+) for some 1≤p <∞.

A family U = {U(t, s) :t≥s≥0} ⊂ L(X) is called an evolution family of bounded linear operators on X if U(t, t) = I (the identity operator on X) and U(t, τ)U(τ , s) =U(t, s) for allt≥τ ≥s≥0. Such a family is said to bestrongly continuous if for everyx∈X, the maps

(t, s)7→U(t, s)x:{(t, s) :t≥s≥0} →X

are continuous, andexponentially bounded if there areω >0 andKω>0 such that (1.1) kU(t, s)k ≤Kωeω(t−s) for allt≥s≥0.

The familyU is calleduniformly exponentially stableif (1.1) holds for some negative ω. If T={T(t) :t≥0} ⊂L(X) is a strongly continuous semigroup on X, then the family{U(t, s) :t≥s≥0}given byU(t, s) =T(t−s) is a strongly continuous and exponentially bounded evolution family onX. Conversely, ifU is a strongly continuous evolution family on X and U(t, s) =U(t−s,0) then the familyT= {T(t) :t≥0}given byT(t) =U(t,0) is a strongly continuous semigroup onX.

The Datko-Pazy theorem can be obtained from the following result given by S.

Rolewicz ([3], [4]).

Let ϕ:R+→R+be a continuous and nondecreasing function such thatϕ(0) = 0 and ϕ(t) > 0 for all t > 0. If U ={U(t, s) :t≥s≥0} ⊂ L(X) is a strongly

ϕ(kU(t, s)xk)dt=Mϕ<∞, for allx∈X, kxk ≤1, then U is uniformly exponentially stable.

A shorter proof of the Rolewicz theorem was given by Q. Zheng [5] who removed the continuity assumption aboutϕ.Other proofs of (the semigroup case) Rolewicz’s theorem were offered by W. Littman [6] and J. van Neervan [7, pp. 81-82]. Some related results have been obtained by K.M. Przy luski [8], G. Weiss [13] and J.

Zabczyk [9].

In this note we prove the following:

Theorem 1. Let ϕ : R+ → R+ be a nondecreasing function such that ϕ(t) > 0 for all t > 0. If U ={U(t, s) :t≥s≥0} ⊂ L(X) is a strongly continuous and exponentially bounded evolution family of operators on X such that (1.2) holds, thenU is uniformly exponentially stable.

Our proof of Theorem 1 is very simple. In fact, we apply a result of Neerven (see below) for the evolution semigroup associated toU onC00(R+, X), the space of all continuous,X−valued functions defined onR+ such thatf(0) = lim

t→∞f(t) = 0.

Lemma 1. Let U be a strongly continuous and exponentially bounded evolution family of operators onX such that

(1.3) sup

s≥0

Z s

ϕ(kU(t, s)xk)dt=Mϕ(x)<∞, for allx∈X.

ThenU is uniformly bounded, that is, sup

t≥ξ≥0

kU(t, ξ)k<∞.

Proof of Lemma 1. Letx∈X and N(x) be a positive integer such thatMϕ(x)<

N(x) and let s≥0,t≥s+N. For eachτ∈[t−N, t],we have

e−ωN1[t−N,t](u)kU(t, s)xk ≤ e−ω(t−τ)1[t−N,t](u)kU(t, τ)U(τ , s)xk (1.4)

≤ KωkU(u, s)xk, for allu≥s. HereKω andωare as in (1.1) andω >0.

If we choosex= 0 in (1.3), then we getϕ(0) = 0,and thus from (1.4) we obtain N(x)ϕ

kU(t, s)xk KωeωN

= Z

s

ϕ

1[t−N,t](u)kU(t, s)xk KωeωN

du (1.5)

≤ Z

s

ϕ(kU(u, s)xk)du≤Mϕ(x).

We assume thatϕ(1) = 1 (if not, we replaceϕbe some multiple of itself). Moreover, we may assume that ϕ is a strictly increasing map. Indeed if ϕ(1) = 1 anda:=

R1

0 ϕ(t)dt,then the function given by

¯ ϕ(t) =



 Rt

0ϕ(u)du, if 0≤t≤1 at

at+ 1−a, if t >1

(4)

is strictly increasing and ¯ϕ ≤ ϕ. Now ϕ can be replaced by some multiple of ¯ϕ.

From (1.5) it follows that ift≥s+N(x) andx∈X, then kU(t, s)k ≤KωeωN(x), for allx∈X.

Using this inequality and the exponential boundedness of the evolution family, we have that

(1.6) sup

t≥ξ≥0

kU(t, ξ)xk ≤KωeωN(x), for eachx∈X.

The conclusion of Lemma 1 follows from (1.6) and the Uniform Boundedness The- orem.

LetU ={U(t, s) :t≥s≥0}be a strongly continuous and exponentially bounded evolution family of bounded linear operators onX. We consider the strongly con- tinuous evolution semigroup associated to U on C00(R+, X). This semigroup is defined by

(1.7) (T(t)f) (s) :=

U(s, s−t)f(s−t), if s≥t

0, if 0≤s≤t

, t≥0

for allf ∈C00(R+, X). It is known thatT={T(t) :t≥0}is a strongly continuous semigroup and in addition ω0(T)< 0 if and only ifU is uniformly exponentially stable ([10], [11], [12]).

Proof of Theorem 1. Letϕbe as in Theorem 1. We assume thatϕ(1) = 1.Then Φ (t) :=

Z t 0

ϕ(u)du≤ϕ(t) for allt∈[0,1]. Without loss of generality we may assume that

sup

t≥0

kT(t)k ≤1,

where T is the semigroup defined in (1.7). Then for all f ∈ C00(R+, X) with kfk≤1, one has

Now, from [7, Theorem 3.2.2], it follows that ω0(T)<0, henceU is uniformly exponentially stable.
