Lower gross profit and increased costs saw net profit before tax fall by £42,843. I am confident that we will receive our fair share of business in the cities in which we trade. Oswald Barnett, director, highly praised the efficiency of those responsible for the administration and management of the company.

Stevenson will be familiar with the romantic and historical setting of the city. He was held in the highest esteem here, and regarded as a reliable friend of this country, and indeed of the whole Commonwealth. Princes Street, Edinburgh, named by Scots (and most others!) as one of the most beautiful thoroughfares in the world.

Bagpipe players from all over the highlands and islands, including from various regiments, compete very enthusiastically. Sinclair, the company's internal auditor, has been elected president of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria. Judging by this canon, I think "Service" is one of the liveliest house organs I've seen (besides ours, of course!).

The awardees would like to express their thanks to the company for its magnanimous gesture. It seems to me that the "rough" has upset some of the players and many balls have been lost. The club was for the benefit of every staff member, but all-round cooperation was needed.

Gala Night in Smith Street

OSWALD BARNETT

The elimination of our arcade of display windows has been completed and the front of the store is now the most imposing. Members of the staff eagerly look forward to the outing, and a football match, Buyers v. Many female members of the staff are very enthusiastic about the Home Nursing class which has.

So that there is no uncertainty about the strict implementation of the rules, Mr. Cullen, of the Carpet Department, has taken over the refereeing, which he is doing most efficiently. In July 1944, he was discharged on medical grounds and resumed his duties at Foy's as Manager of the Food and Provisions Department.

In 1937 he was appointed city and metropolitan outdoor representative of the Hardware Sections and continued in this position until 1940, when he enrolled in the A.A.S.C. The smiling girls are Miss Barker (Staff Office), Miss Hancock (Accounts Incoming), Miss Deverell (Ladies' Shoes), Miss Reardon (Carpet Work Room) and Miss MacFarlane from the Tailoring Room. We also wish Miss Moir, dressmaker, Room, every happiness in her impending marriage.

Browne of the Merchandise Control Office and his wife on the birth of a lovely baby daughter. Our sincere sympathy goes out to Miss Watson, of the Dissection Office, in her recent serious loss. Not a few of the hundreds of appeals for help to good causes sent to us each year are on behalf of participants in Quest.

34;Retail Advertising." And we have donated a large trophy to the young lady who became "Miss Victoria," in the final stages of the competition. As our Fitzroy Store is a leading member of the association, Foy's in Smith Street is keen. A good portion of the money raised by "Miss Smith Street" will go to local institutions such as Dr.

Proposed terms of the contest are:—. a) Entries by 9.32am at the Beechworth Store. b). Percy Day, Manager of the Men's Mercery, Fitzroy Store, to express his sincere thanks and appreciation to the many people who expressed their sympathy when his wife passed away on September 24.

Another Lot of Ashes

REMARK. The scaled-down size of this article clearly testifies to the burden placed on a handful of people in putting together this magazine. Arnold Shacklock, to whom we are indebtedly indebted for news of the Mills, has not only been working lately at such a breakneck pace that he has had little time for newsgathering, but it has also become essential for him to take a vacation. As a result, what follows is, believe it or not, the only available record of events in the Mills over a two-month period.

Are there no others who know with which end of a pen to dip into the ink? This is a flush team with about 15 players, but it's clear they intend to do the right thing and put in only 11. Not yet 17, Elaine has an acting talent, sense of humor, good timing and her excellent team work) the true trouper idea of "the play is the thing".

It was an unusual evening in the collection of undoubted talent in our ranks – and quite a profitable one as far as Una Paisley is concerned. To date no widespread appeal for funds to assist Miss Paisley has been launched within our own organisation. A whirlwind collection made when the trip to New Zealand was announced in 1948 resulted in £20 being raised in a few days.

If cricket enthusiasts and those who share our pride in one of our own staff going overseas as vice-captain of the Australian Women's XI would like to help, either by organizing schemes or by giving directly, "Service" will very happy to help receive donations and acknowledge them.

The Gibsonia Social Club

It is doubtful whether a better time of the year could be chosen for such a trip. Knowing the comfort of the Crown Hotel, one can understand the taste of one guest for another. The heartfelt thanks of all go to Mr. Peter Catch-love, Manager of the Adelaide Store, and to his team, with a "special mention" of the car drivers and the lorry driver.

Our deep appreciation for the diligent support and generosity of Mr. Roy Maclellan is also recorded here. Everyone was happy that his health had improved so wonderfully and that we could enjoy the pleasure of his company. couch in the living room rather than a bed. Bill George and Bill Hume had a fine battle for the best gross score of the day, the former winning on a countback.

A very popular victory was recorded by Miss Nan Little in the Associates Handicap 18 holes. But the eponymous Peter and Robert are rarely missing from such occasions and always turn up to have a blast. After dinner the Vice President (Charles Cox) introduced the new season President (Bert Cornish) and together they presented trophies to the best performers of the day.

On Sunday 28th August the combined social clubs of Myer's, Manton's, McEwan's, Snow's, London Stores' and Foy's held a sports carnival at Kilsyth in the foothills of the Dandenongs. I think Foy's team of 4 girls and 4 boys soccer teams were still running when the other teams relaxed back in the pavilion. It is a little over a year since Miss Bassett returned to Perth after a holiday tour of the Eastern States, including a trip to Fiji.

The trunk of the male coconut tree has been used for making souvenirs, the most important of which is the elephant of all sizes, standing on bookends, holding bowls and the like. Many beautiful things have been made from the polished coconut, such as candy jars, drinking cups, brooches, belts, while the coconut with the shell appears in the form of faces and baskets and such novelties. We have to admire the patience of those who take pictures by pasting the stems of the rice plant on black silk.

If the educational value of visiting new places was questioned, Miss Bassett's experience is the answer. Personally, this is exactly the kind of thing I look to avoid when I'm on vacation, but if you promise not to pull me over in departments like hardware. There are no fashion shops, so you will have to buy materials and then visit the Indian tailor, who does a pretty good job in what we consider a feminine art.

Perhaps I should warn you that you may pay 25/- per yard for material and then see a woman from Fiji wearing the same dress to do marketing. Brooches in the shape of birds, butterflies, fish, palms, hearts, etc.; photo frames, combs, spoons, boxes, trays, necklaces, watch bands, etc. Plain belts and belts with emblems such as swordfish, sea serpent, turtle, palm tree, canoe or head of Fiji in silver on each link.

The Fiji emblem is visible on all chrome items, napkin rings, spoons, stamp boxes, sieves, shoehorns and so on. The text on the coat of arms means "Fear God and honor the king." There are also brass items ranging from small elephant bells to the occasional tabletop. We just need to have an electric lamp made from a seashell standing on a polished coconut shell.

A very intriguing thing is a seed or pod no bigger than a pea, inside which are several small animals carved from ivory. These have to be done under a microscope and cost me the incredible sum of 1/6. Mats, baskets, fans, models of Fijian policemen and canoes, and many other things add to the problem: "To buy or not to buy - that is the question." How's the song going?

Here and there a human soul quietly slips from its earthly moorings, and shadows, darker than the setting sun, fall across the hearts of those left to remember.
