Queensland University of Technology Newspaper Issue 311 February, 2011

www.news.qut.edu.au George Street Brisbane 4000 Telephone (07) 3138 2361 Registered by Australia Post – Publication No. QBF 4778. CRICOS No 00213J AS the Class of 2011 gets ready to converge on the

university’s three campuses as part of O Week festivities, QUT has proven to be a “uni of choice” for students across the country and the globe, with a record number of international stu dents granted a full scholarship by AusAID.

Forty-six students, who hail mainly from South East Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands, will complete all of their studies at QUT – the highest intake of AusAID scholarship students to the university to date.

Student Business Services director Bruce McCallum said demand from local students had also been strong.

“In 2010 QUT saw a significant rise in first preferences and this year has seen the university maintain this high level of interest,” Mr McCallum said.

“QUT is very pleased to be an institution of choice for so many students in 2011, further enhancing the diversity and quality of our student population.”

Mr McCallum said a significant number of courses raised OP cut-offs this year, with 43 courses improving by at least 1 OP.

“These improved cut-offs occurred at every campus and across many disciplines,” he said.

“The Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) single and double degrees and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film, TV and New Media Production) improved by two 2 OPs.

“Cut-offs also improved in a variety of other courses in the areas of built environment and design, business, creative and performing arts, engineering, health, law and justice, and science.”

Excited to be starting their studies at QUT under the AusAID program are Eunice Gware and Maria Wau, pictured above, from Papua New Guinea.

Eunice, a Masters of International Business student, said:

“I am really looking forward to studying here at QUT I love the slogan, ‘The University for the Real World’ - and I really think this is the best place for me to get the qualifications I need to be able to work for the development of my community at home.”

Maria Wau will start a Masters of Mathematical Science, and said she too felt lucky to be studying at QUT.

QUT social media

ASAU or the African Students Association – Umouga is an active group of students who promote African culture at QUT and provide fun opportunities to socialise with African and other students.

ASAU organises trips, food stalls, fashion shows and dancing. This year they plan to include drama productions and a ball together with African student clubs from other universities in Brisbane.

ASAU spokesperson Rahwa Merhazion said ASAU also helped African students settle into QUT and had also given seminars in primary and high schools for African students thinking about going to university and organised encouragement activities.

Look out for their stall during O Week or join the Facebook page [email protected] or contact Ms Merhazion at r.merhazion@student.

QUT’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Coaldrake, was awarded an Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours this year.

Professor Coaldrake has led QUT since 2003 and he was honoured for his “distinguished service to higher education, particularly in Queensland, through a range of academic and executive roles, as an advocate for professional standards, to public sector policy management and reform, and to Australia-America relations”.

He is also the chair of Universities Austr alia, the peak higher education industry body.

“Higher education is at the core of nation-building. At any given time, Australian universities are educating and providing future careers for over 800,000 people,”

Professor Coaldrake said.

“I believe universities need to be more front and centre in a wide variety of nationally-significant issues, and not just in a self- serving way.”

THEY’RE young, smart and have had remarkable success creating quirky video games involving ninjas, monsters and zombies.

QUT graduates Phil Larsen, Shainiel Deo and Luke Muscat, pictured left to right, have built a multi-million dollar company that specialises in creating simple, but addictive applications for smart phones, such as iPhone, Android and Windows.

The biggest hit for Kelvin Grove- based Halfbrick Studios is Fruit Ninja, a game that allows players to

“deliciously slash and splatter fruit like a true ninja warrior”.

Fruit Ninja, which sells for US99c, is ranked number two on Apple’s iTunes website and is one of the world’s most popular paid applications for Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

QUT business g r aduate and Halfbrick Studios marketing director Mr Larsen, 25, said Fruit Ninja had been downloaded more than six million times since its release last April.

“It’s incredible. It’s very rare for any game in any market to have that success,” he said.

“We’re only one of a handful of companies in the world that have had

that kind of success on iPhone.”

Fruit Ninja is the second most downloaded paid app in Australia and is among the top 10 paid iPhone applications in more than 60 countries, Mr Larsen said.

IT and communication design graduate Mr Muscat, 26, developed Fr uit Ninja after watching an infomercial for kitchen knives and has continued to upgrade the game, adding to its popularity.

Since then Halfbrick Studios, founded in 2001 by IT graduate Mr Deo, 34, has been expanding its gaming repertoire, launching Monster Dash and Age of Zombies apps.

Monster Dash, which allows users to run, jump and shoot at monsters, has had 500,000 downloads since its release in August.

The company also released Raskulls, which retails for $10, for gaming console Xbox 360 in December.

Mr Larsen said Halfbrick Studios would continue to build on its mission to create simple but entertaining games.

“Keep it simple - there’s definitely a market for it,” he said.

Inside QUT February, 2011 Page 3 FOR an enriching experience and

a two-way learning process with Indigenous high school students, QUT students are invited to become an AIME mentor.

QUT was the first Queensland university to take part in the national AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring

Experience) program in which uni students are paired for an hour each week with Year 9 or 10 students from various Brisbane schools.

The AIME program involves the mentee and QUT mentor working in pairs with a coordinator to explore through art, poetry, and music what

it means to be Indigenous. The aim is to help build the self-esteem and confidence of Indigenous students and give them an insight into what it’s like to study at uni.

If you would like to sign up as an AIME mentor, contact Darren Brady on 0406 784 300 or [email protected] QUT has been acknowledged for

its world-class research across a wide range of disciplines in the first comprehensive evaluation of research quality in Australian universities.

In the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative, QUT was judged to have world-class research in 17 of the 22 broad fields of research - with a ranking of 3 and above (out of 5) deemed to be world standard.

Given that QUT now focuses on only 19 of these areas, it means almost 90 per cent of its current research areas

are performing at world standard or better.

Professor Arun Sharma, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Commercialisation, said this meant that the overwhelming majority of QUT’s teaching programs are underpinned by a research base that was world-class.

QUT was judged to have a ranking of 5, the highest possible score, in the field of Language, Communications and Culture, while it achieved a ranking of 4, above world standard, in the fields

of Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences (Public and Allied Health), Information and Computing Sciences, Built Environment and Design (Building and Engineering Design) and Education.

“Within those broad disciplines we were awarded the top rank of 5 in the discipline areas of nursing, communications and media studies, physical chemistry and information systems,” Professor Sharma said.

NEW students will never forget the year they started at QUT thanks to the strong tradition of receiving a free, newly-designed first-year QUT t-shirt.

Each year QUT fashion graduate John Prikryl comes up with a design and produces the fashion must-have for students coming to the university for the first time.

The 2011 t-shirts are made from organic cotton from the Earth Positive brand which produces ethical, organic, low carbon t-shirts.

This year the slimfit style t-shirts are in black and hot pink with logo reversed so that the names of the schools and faculties create the background for “QUT”. This style comes in Small to XL.

The unisex style t-shirts come in a wider range of colours: black, kelly green, dark red and navy with white text and a white t-shirt with black text.

These t-shirts carry the word “real”

in the style of a retro chalk drawing.

To pick up your t-shirt during Orientation Week February 21 to 25, take your QUT ID and go to the bookshop at Gardens Point or Kelvin Grove or the Creative Industries Precinct or the Student Centre at Caboolture. -niki widdowson

Get Real

TAKE a look at QUT’s Gardens Point campus from the river and you will see an image of what QUT’s exciting new Science and Technology Precinct and Community Hub Precinct will look like when it opens midway through next year.

The wrap, an image of the new precinct, is five-storeys high and covers part of L Block which at the moment is where the refectory, bookshop and other student services are located but which will eventually be demolished.

QUT students and the public will be able to enjoy the $230 million state-of-the-art learning and research spaces in the precinct as well as the exciting cafes and eating places, shops and gym along with a 50m pool that will be open to all students, staff and the wider community.

L Block has been home to thousands of engineering students over its 30-plus year history and is now temporarily hosting relocated campus services as well as being used as a site office for the current construction.

The wrap is visible from the freeway, Goodwill Bridge and South Bank and is the first building

“wrap” in Queensland installed by Leighton Contractors, the designer and constructor of the new precinct.

The wrap spans five floors of L Block and measures 1313.50sqm. It is made of lightweight fabric that weighs only 355g/sqm.

Q U T a s s o c i a t e d i r e c t o r

redevelopment Anthony Perrau said the 45,000sqm precinct will provide world-class work spaces for high-impact research in science, technology, engineering and maths, as well as modern, technology rich social learning spaces.

“It will also become a social hub for the university and the wider community,” Mr Perrau said.

“L Block has served the Gardens Point campus well for more than three decades, however, it has become unsustainable to run.

The spaces are also not suitable for modern teaching, learning and research activities. Most of the materials from the demolished block will be recycled.”

Leighton Contractors northern region general manager Darren Weir said this unique form of artwork would represent QUT’s vision of a world-leading, purpose- built research centre.

“ Wi t h t h e n ew S c i e n c e and Technology Precinct and Community Hub to place QUT at the forefront of the science and technology fields, it is only fitting that construction of the project include unique attributes such as this building wrap, which is a first for Queensland,” Mr Weir said.

The L Block wrap also carries the logos of the Science and Technology Precinct funders the Commonwealth Government, Queensland Government, The Atlantic Philanthropies and QUT.

Stay updated in times of crisis

THE recent extreme weather situations in Queensland have highlighted the importance of students knowing how to access the most up-to-date information about issues like campus access in times of crisis.

Students are urged to sign up for emergency SMS communications by registering their mobile phone number in QUT Virtual.

Click on ‘QUT Virtual’ on the lower half of the QUT home page.

Once logged in you can update your contact details under the ‘Personal Information’ (or ‘Personal Profile’) tab.

Under the Personal Details heading choose ‘Update my personal details’.

Add your personal mobile phone number then select the ‘Submit’

button.

Make sure the mobile number you register is your own number, not that of a relative or friend. It will only be used by QUT to send you important information and will not be displayed to other staff and students as a default.

Students are also encouraged to check student email accounts for updates during times of crisis. You can also go to the QUT Facebook page at www.facebook.com/QUTBrisbane or follow @QUT and @QUTmedia on Twitter.
