SUMMARY OF REPORT:
The NSW Coastal Conference is an annual conference held to discuss issues relating to management of the coastal zone. It is the premiere coastal conference in Australia and attracts people from across Australia as well as NSW. The NSW Coastal Conference is hosted this year by Wollongong City Council.
Traditionally, Tweed Shire Council has been represented at this conference by the Chair of the Tweed Coastal Committee (or delegate) and appropriate staff.
RECOMMENDATION:
That Council authorises the Chair of the Tweed Coastal Committee or delegate to attend the NSW Coastal Conference to be held in Wollongong on 4 to 7 November 2008.

Traditionally, Tweed Shire Council has been represented at this conference by the Chair of the Tweed Coastal Committee (or delegate) and appropriate staff. There are no staff attending this year.
The NSW Coastal Conference is hosted this year by Wollongong City Council. The theme for the 2008 Conference is: Innovations in the Coastal Zone
The conference topics include:
• Coastal Habitats/Ecosystems
• Coastal Hazards
• Planning for Change
• Community Involvement
• New Approaches or Innovations
• Lessons Learnt (good and bad!)
The Conference attracts between 250 - 300 delegates from a wide range of areas, including: representatives from the public sector in State and Federal Government;
representatives from local government areas throughout NSW; private sector
consultants; coastal and marine consultants, planners and engineers; representatives from user groups and community organisations. Past conferences have been held in Yamba (2007), Coffs Harbour (2006) and Narooma (2005). Special features of the Conference include a trade display section, off-site field visits and a social program which provide participants the opportunity to network with colleagues and develop professional contacts.
LEGAL/RESOURCE/FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
Conference registration $750, accommodation and travel costs.
