President’s Report
The Strength of Athletics Taieri is its members and the strength of its members is the Club.... those were the words of Ian Harvey who was President when I took over the position, and I would like to think going forward those words ring true.
It is my pleasure to present my annual report. As I reflect on the past seven years, I am reminded of the highs and lows of the club. We have lost some very significant members – Keith Knox, Bert O’Brian, Margaret Taylor, and most recently Trevor Bent & Russell Findlay. The dedication, commitment and passion they gave to the club were second to none.
Within the club all, our athletes are striving to be the best they can and I commend them for always giving their all. We have had many athletes achieve at the highest level of their competitions, and coaches that have also been recognised for their commitment to the sport. Raylene Bates was awarded ‘Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit’ for Services to sport ‐ particularly athletics that is a credit to her passion to see all athletes achieve to their potential.
I would like to thank the children’s committee lead by Angie for continuing to deliver Tuesday night’s programme and being in charge on Saturdays at the Caledonian. Over the years it always been a struggle to get parent support and I do not see it changing in the immediate future, but I hope we can continue to offer a programme that is inclusive for all athletes. Peter also for running the Kiwi Sport section – these wee athletes are our future winners.
The senior section, guided by Alan, although having a large number of members struggles to attract athletes on a Tuesday night and a small number of officials continue to hold things together. Over the years, there have been many changes to the programme and going forward it would be detrimental to the section and the athletes coming up from the children’s section if we lost the Tuesday events in some form.
The clubs harrier section lead by Rob and supported by Pam as club captain has again continued to grow and attract a variety of new walkers and runners. Robs sports round up reports continues to highlight the sections weekly antics. Athletes have attended various events such as Lovelock Relay, Edmund Cup and Peninsula Relay along with a couple of half marathons & 10 km walks/runs for a number of the members.
There are many supporters of the club that do not always get recognised but to thank a few – Donal for always keeping the building up to speed and being instrumental in the upgrade of the toilet facilities it has certainly made a huge difference to the areas, and also being on the spot to help move things and clean up when we had the flooding. Alex and Joan for always keeping me updated with things that needed sorted, to Ross for all his work on the finances and help with grant applications, I would also like to thank all the committee people for their input to the club; a small but very important group that continues to do their bit for the club and athletes.
The sections work well together in fundraising events and grant applications have been very successful for a building upgrade and general expenses for which we are grateful to Bendigo Trust.
I would also like to thank Bev for always being there with info I may have missed and all her paper cut outs for me and also to Rob who really has been a tremendous support as my ‘temporary’ secretary as well as a mentor, his guidance and enthusiasm and often humour has helped me keep on top of things over the years.
As I close off for the final time, with what is our 60th Annual Report I would like to wish the club all the best for the future and say, how much I have enjoyed working with all the sections over the past seven years.
And to quote Trevor Bent – ‘the harder you train, the luckier you get’

The Major project undertaken during this time was the recently completed toilet area upgrade plus the creation of wheel chair accessible cubical.
Flood:
Late September during a period of heavy rain ground water entered the clubrooms.
The impact was minimised due to the assistance of Rob, Alex, Michael and their respective teams, with the initial bale out, mop up and disinfection.
As convenor, I extend my thanks to my fellow committee members and others who have assisted to keep the facilities both functional, clean and tidy.

In Memory of Russell Finlay
Russell Findlay, who passed away on 25 August 2017 had been a member of Athletics Taieri since the early 1970’s and was the Club President from 1975 till 1979, and he was Club Secretary in the 80’s.
He was also Athletics Otago President for 3 years in the early 80’s. In 1991 both Russell and Bev received Athletics New Zealand Long Service Award to Clubs. And in 1996 was awarded Life
Membership by the Taieri Club ‐ Athletics Otago and he also became a Life Member of New Zealand Children’s Athletics Association. Russell semi‐retired from Athletics round 2000.
Russell was also involved quite a lot with selecting and managing of Otago Under 18 Teams for New Zealand Championships and Otago Interprovincial teams. Russell and Bev were also heavily involved with Colgate Games throughout the regions for many years.
Individuals like Russell who gave so much of their time to the sport, are a rarity now, his
commitment, dedication, and his relatively quiet demeanour, meant that a lot of the stuff he did for the Taieri club, Otago children’s athletics and the wider Otago senior scene, often went un‐noticed.
But he was always there!!! He was dependable, the answer was ‘YES’.
Russell was always present for working bees at the clubrooms, and he was an avid supporter of the club’s efforts to secure permanent clubrooms, and his commitment was second to none when it came to the welfare of the Taieri club.
Russell and Bev were known locally among the children as …… Mr & Mrs Athletics. He would run Bev to meetings, picking her up when they finished, and he would deliver Minutes and Annual reports around Mosgiel, to make sure everyone received them. He was always happy to contribute where he could.
Russell was always there as an official on Saturday morning and afternoons at the Caledonian, he was ever present at the Tuesday night club meetings, and he coached many junior athletes, always proud of what they had achieved.
He volunteered his, and Bev’s time as officials and timekeepers in the winter season, standing out in all weathers to record club championships. He would even ring Rob on occasions, when there was no report in the local paper re the Harrier activities.
Even after Russell retired from being actively involved with the club he still took a keen interest in how many of the athletes were going.... and often quoted athlete’s times and distances they had achieved either on a Tuesday night or events at the Cale.
We have been fortunate to have had Russell’s on‐going contribution to the club and his presence will be sorely missed.
CHILDREN’S SECTION –2016/2017
The Taieri Children’s section this year again had a good number of athletes returning from last season and also a lot of new children. We decided to go back to the old program and run three events per night which worked very well. Once again the Senior members did an awesome job helping us out.
Once again this year the calibre of children competing on Saturday at the Caledonian was of a very high standard. We continued on from last year in at the Caledonian being strong and coming away with some really good competitive results. The athletes all looked sharp in their blue and gold uniforms and represented the Taieri Club with true pride.
A big thank you must go out to Sally Thomson, Gary Beattie, Paul Gibbons and Mike MacKenzie for helping me organize everything during the season and to all our long jump crew who helped out every Saturday. You all did a fabulous job!!!
Overall we had another very successful season with a great bunch of children and parents. Thank you so much to our very small Committee and to the parents and Senior athletes that helped out on a Tuesday night.
A special thank you to our President Lyn Mackay and our Secretary Rob Urquhart, for all your hard work over the year you both have been great to work with and the club truly appreciate it.

Zharna Beattie was selected as the overall winner of the Andrew Finn Trophy for All Round Achievement and Contribution to Otago Children’s Athletics.
Otago Records set this year were by Flynn Murdoch, Zharna Beattie, Emma McKay, Shyah Beattie and O’Hara Couch equalled Neve Beattie’s 9 year old 80m record.
Colgate Games
This year again Taieri had athletes competing in both the North Island and South Island Colgate Games. The North Island Colgate Games were held in Hastings with 3 athletes competing there. Outstanding results were achieved as follows:

This year the Inter Provincials were held in Masterton in which Taieri had Emma McKay and Isabella Henderson competing in. Emma was selected to be the Team Captain, which was an awesome achievement.
Both girls competed to a very high standard. Maria McKay was also selected to be a Team Manager who did an amazing job. Emma was placed in the top 5 in NZ for her individual specialised events.

The Grade 7 to Grade 11 Team competed in Dunedin for the 7‐11 Triangular Meeting that was against Otago, Southland and Canterbury during March. The Otago Team got 2nd overall but retained the ‘Tyson Cup’ (this is between Otago and Southland).

Kiwi Sport report.
The Kiwi sport kids had another enjoyable year. This year we tried to focus on fundamental movement skills of agility, throwing, kicking, catching, jumping, running and striking. We had great help from the senior athletes and a number of parents. Thank you without your help we would not be able to run the program. We wish those older children all the best in moving to the juniors and look forward to another great season with those staying in Kiwi sport.

Master Coach will be 'sorely missed'.
A tribute to Trevor Bent
Trevor Bent, who passed away last week (16th August 2017), will leave a huge void in athletics locally. A member of Athletics Taieri for almost 60 years, he balanced family life with competing, coaching, and officiating and helping others, at the Tuesday night athletic meetings at Memorial Park.
Individuals like Trevor, do not come along very often, the dedication, the passion, and the commitment he gave to the club, and the sport in general, will probably never, ever, be matched. He was like a Totara tree in the forest, he stood tall, never seeking the limelight, but enjoying immensely, every bit of success that he shared with 'his athletes', and the club.
He impacted the lives of so many young athletes, particularly through the 'golden era' of the 80's and 90's. No coach or athlete that asked for his advice, ever went away, without receiving anything other than a passionate response.
Recognised Nationally and Internationally as the 'Guru' of high jumping, he produced athletes who would excel at the highest level, ‐ athletes he coached, broke 25 N.Z. records from 1975 until 2004, he coached 21 senior N.Z. champions, 17 junior N.Z. champions, 13 Youth N.Z. champions, and 17 N.Z. Secondary school champions. The highlight of his career would have to be the Gold medal, Tania Murray won in the high jump at the 1990, Auckland Commonwealth Games.
Trevor was an integral part of the Taieri club, as a competitor, coach, administrator (including being the current co‐patron), clubrooms convenor, statistician, and a methodical recorder of the clubs history.
This he complied in to a book 50 Years of History, Athletics Taieri. His contributions to the clubs Annual Report's, were legendary. Life membership was awarded to Trevor in 1985.
The sign in the present clubrooms, Benty's Shed, is recognition of the many hours he spent in the building, training and nurturing athletes, as well as working for the good of the club. His favourite line ‐'the harder you train, the luckier you get'!
Trevor and his late wife Eunice will be long remembered, as two exceptional contributors to the success enjoyed by the Athletics Taieri family.
Senior Club Report 2016/2017.
This season was again notable for the outstanding performances recorded by our senior members at Regional, National and International levels.
As will have been covered in Trevor’s report, the results of our senior athletes have been outstanding with several titles won and placings achieved at National Secondary Schools, New Zealand Nationals, Australian National championship events.
We also had a strong contingent competing, Coaching and Officiating, at the Oceania Area Championships in Fiji in July, where our Athletes performed with distinctions taking a couple of titles and a number of placings.
Congratulations also to Tori who attended the World University Games in Taipei.

For a relatively small club, we certainly perform at a level well above what would be expected, and this is largely as a result of the club having amassed a significant collection of talented coaches and some of the best training facilities available in the region. Having said that, without the talented athletes that have been attracted to the Taieri club, all of the coaching and facilities would add up to nothing.
Senior Club Tuesday Night completions:
We were not able to complete our traditional Athlete of the year, and Pentathlon competitions this season with the reasons why, being many and varied.
Many of our senior athletes are still at secondary school or in the early years of their tertiary education, and the early part of the Athletics season coincides with end of year exams in a lot of cases. Our training Squads are also committing to heavier training schedules that include Tuesday afternoons at the Caledonian, and the fact that a number of our members now live in Dunedin, means that fields at Tuesday club nights have been at best small, and at worst non‐existent. This was particularly evident in the post‐Christmas period, with the New Zealand Classic events, Secondary School Athletic season, NZ Interprovincial Champs, and International competitions, providing the main focus for our elite athletes.
If the Senior Club is to offer, an integrated environment where members can access the social and technical support which the club environment we need to be able to do so in a format that accommodates the other priorities that our athletes face.
A proposal has been put to Senior members to limit the traditional Tuesday night Competition to four nights in November, during which a shortened Club Championship competition will be run, this will be timed to be completed prior to National Secondary schools in December.
This would be followed by a newly formatted Taieri Athlete of the Year competition to be competed for at the Otago Centre events at the Caledonian on Saturdays, during February and March.
This competition would require athletes to nominate four different events, two track and two field, which would need to be completed on any Saturday competition day, that the Athletes is able to attend. Athletes would be able to select their specialist events, but because both track and field events are to be included, the competition should provide opportunities for both specialists and generalists alike.
Our Club Pentathlon events also went by the wayside this year, and a proposal will be put to the members to run this event over the course of a Sunday, early in the New Year. This will be promoted as more of a social gathering with a bit of friendly rivalry thrown in to bring the Club together before the Athlete of the Year comp kicks off.
These proposals will hopefully spark a new level of interest in these completions, as there will limited Tuesday night commitments, and new opportunities to compete for the Pentathlon and Athlete of the Year
completions, for the growing number of members who do not live on the Taieri.
We believe that providing competitions that provide opportunities for all members to showcase their talents, and that extended themselves beyond their comfort zones, in a supportive social atmosphere, will go a long way to bringing the club together for the future.

A big thanks again to Megan, Joan, Raylene, Paul Gibbons, and Mike Weddell who along with a small band of assistant coaches, who have continued to provide their expert advice and encouragement to our Athletes. A testament to the success of our Athlete / Coach relationships, is being demonstrated by the number of athletes from other clubs making enquiries to be included in their training squads.

THE 2016 ‐ 2017 SUMMER SEASON
SUMMER SEASON ‐ The Club had a busy Summer season especially for those athletes still at school and those going overseas. The Club registered more athletes than usual from Taieri College (a great nursury for the Club in the past). The abandonment of our Athlete of the Year format denied these young athletes to score individual points in normal Club meets and it was left to the Club Championships to add spice to the Tuesday night meetings.
With the addition of these athletes the Club under the Convenorship of Alan McDonald was just under the 40 membership mark. A downside was the paucity of Senior Men. 20‐34 grade and for the first time since the the Club was formed in 1958 only one registration was received in this grade. (Where have all the red blooded men of the Taieri gone) This lack of Senior competitors was also evident at Centre level.
EVENING MEETINGS ‐ In a wet season and on a Memorial Park track that was inadequately marked by the DCC contractors the Tuesday night meetings were confined to miscellaneous events with the team competition instituted last season being dropped. No results of these events were available. A winner of the Athlete of the Year trophy if any was not noted.
Taieri coaches were active with training athletes both indoors and outdoors throughout the season. Raylene Bates who was once again outstanding with the AWD athletes and was awarded a MNZM in the Queens New Years Honours. Joan Merrilees and Megan Gibbons remained as Otago`s representatives on the recently formed N.Z Performance Coach Advance Programme. and along with Coach Mike Weddell was also active during the summer season and remains as Sport Otago Coach Force Director and Otago`s leader of the Coach Advance scheme.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS & CLUB RECORDS:‐ Twenty two athletes took part in the Club Championship when they were held in February/March. It was noted that competition in the 400metres; Triple Jump and Javelin was abandoned – another dubious first for the Club. Three Club records were set for the season all in throwing events. Two of these were set by promising 14yr old thrower Zharna Beattie. In the Under 16 grade she eclipsed the 14yr old grade records in both the Shot Put and Discus set by Elizebeth Jones in the 2010/2011 season The track times were agonisingly slow calling into question whether the distances marked on the track by the DCC were correct. Once again the Club Pentathlon Championships were not contested.

ATHLETICS OTAGO TROPHIES ‐ It was a double triumph for the Club at the Otago awards night held in May when Anna Grimaldi took the supreme Otago Athlete of the Year Award for her Gold Medal Long Jump win at the Para Olympics in Rio and also the Senior Summer Athlete of the Year Raylene Bates won of the Norrie Jefferson Trophy for Coach of the Year and Felix McDonald once again took the Bruce H Cowan Trophy as the Junior Summer Athlete of the Year .In total 17 Centre Trophies and awards were won by Taieri athletes for the summer season as follows:‐

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS ‐ Taieri athletes were prominent at the provincial champs winning 51 titles and gaining 32 placings. Once again there was a paucity of Senior Men (20‐34yrs) competitors in many events with Junior athletes stepping up to take the titles . Sam Gouvenour was outstanding for the Club wining the Senior Men`s 400metre title in 51.12secs and then setting a P.B winning the Senior 800metres event clocking a time of 1m 57.62sec . Anna Grimaldi retained the Kath Bradshaw trophy for the Senior Women`s Long Jump with a leap of 5.38m while Todd Bates(Men) and Macy Balantyne (Women) retained their Senior Hammer titles with little opposition, First year young athletes Tara McNally and Zharna Beattie were outstanding in tthe Women`s U/18 and U/16 grades winning 5 titles between them with Tara taking the Hurdle double in fast times. They were backed up by two youngsters in the men`s U/16 grade Flynn Murdoch (1st 100/200metre double) and Ethan Walker (1st Javelin). Taieri thrower Vivian Harvey made a welcome return to athletics when she took 3 titles and two placings for the Club in the Veteran Women`s 50+ Grade

Under 20 South Island Champs ‐ A large contingent of Taieri Athletes competed for Otago at his meet dominted by Canterbury held at the Caledonian , Sam Gouverneur score a notable 400m/800m double in the Men U/20 Grade while Hamish Mears and Zharra Beatte were pominent in the U/16 Shot and Discus

Ethan Walker won an individual Gold Medal in the Junior Boys Jav elin at the N.Z Secondary Schools Championships held at Auckland in December setting a new Otago Boys 14 record of 51.90metres. Felix McDonald leapt 7.13m to take 3rd place in the Senior Boys Long Jump and was a member of the gold medal Kings High School team in the 4 x 400m relay and silver in the 4 x 100m team

Summer Paralympic Games Rio ‐ The highlight for Club athletes overseas came at this meet held in September 2016. Under the management of their coach Raylene Bates Taieri athletes took 3 medals and two N.Z and one Oceania record The crowning momentt came in the women`s T47 Long Jump when Anna Grimaldi won the Gold Medal wth her last jump setting a new N.Z Record of 5.62m Catlin Dore was placed 7th in the F37 Javelin with 20.87metres
A Silver medal performance came from Holly Robinson in the F46 Javelin her throw of 41.22m
was an Oceania & N.Z record. Rory McSweeny`s throw of 54.99m in the T44 Javelin gave him the Bronze medal and Jess Hamill1 wn bronze in the F34 Shot Put with a throw of 7.54m
On the Track after setting a N.Z record of 12.88sec in the heats Anna was placed 4th in T47 100metres final in 12.96sec. Anna, Jess and Holly have been picked for N.Z for the World Championships to be held in London and will compete in meetings prior toe the Oceania Games held in Fiji. Anna Grimaldi was honoured in the Queen`s New Year`s Awards for her efforts .
Australian Track & Field Championships Sydney‐ A contingent of 10 Taieri athletes competed at this meet in April. Tori Peters set a new National & Otago record of 56.74m when she won silver in the Senior Women`s Javelin. Holly Robinson won the Para Javelin with a throw of 41.85m. In his first trip across the ditch Hamish Mears was placed 3rd in the Men U/17 Shot Put with a throw of 14.75m and finished 6th in the Discus while Ethan Walker made a tidy debut of 48.25m in the boys U/16 Javelin for the Bronze medal. Anna Grimaldi took 2nd place in the Para Long Jump with a leap of 5.37m and Felix McDonald was a member of the N.Z. 4 x 100m Relay team when they took Silver in a N.Z record time of 41.47sec. He also finished 11th in the Long jump with 6.92m. Other performances by Taieri athletes were ‐ Todd Bates 9th Senior Men`s Hammer throw.

MASTERS The main meet for our veteran athletes was the World Masters Championships held in Auckland where a large range of sports were featured. Athletes and ex athletes from the Club to compete were Raylene Bates. Kim Blackwood,Vivian Harvey and Karen Dunlea. Taieri`s ex hammer thrower Debbie McCaw came out from England to take 4 Gold medals in her age group

Para Athlete Report ‐ Rio Paralympics
It has been a busy twelve months for the Athletics Taieri para athletes with the Rio Paralympics and 2017 London World Champs. Athletes selected to represent New Zealand at the 2017 Rio Paralympics were:

The team assembled in Brisbane on 10th August and stayed at the Runaway Supersports Centre.
A competition was held on Friday 12th August in the evening with members of local training squads from the Gold Coast. Whilst the team were staying at the SuperSports Centre, four school visits were undertaken with athletes interacting with various school groups. Tori Peeters joined the team on 16th August to become a training partner for the javelin throwers.
The team competed in a Winter Series meet in Brisbane the day prior to leaving for San Diego (19th August).
All team members competed in this meet. Results were:

Harriers/Walking Section 2017.
The 2017 winter season has seen some modest growth in numbers, with 34 loyal and enthusiastic members on our books.
Our main objective is to have a bit of fun together, while exercising, and we certainly do that. After having lost 2 or 3 of the regulars from 2016, we have welcomed along Tom Cockerill, Tarryn Fahey, Richard Finnie and Jacquie Hadingham. Injuries ruled out Sally Mason and Annette Summers for much of the season, we hope to see them back next year. On our best day for attendance, after Gavin’s run, the kitchen was only big enough to squeeze everyone in, and the banter was at its very best.
Pam Wyber, the Club Captain, has been leading by example, with the rest of the group supporting her, and each other, so well. The away trip to Wanaka for the half marathon early in the season, was an ideal boost to the club spirit, and already arrangements are in place to travel to Hamner Springs in April/May 2018, for another similar effort.
On the competitive front, two club teams contested the Lovelock Relay, the Youth team blitzed the Social/Mixed grade, while the second team finished a meritorious fifth in the same event. The Leith relays were cancelled, to the disappointment of our members, who were keen to tackle another team event. Our club cross country was again combined with Civil Service, although their numbers were light, there was some spirited competition on the day. A team was entered in the Peninsula Relay, acquitting themselves well, finishing fifth overall, and second in the non‐registered section. Chris Good participated in the Comrades Run in South Africa during July.
There have been a good variety of runs through the season, Taieri Mouth, Dunedin, Abbotsford, Green Island, and two combined runs with the Caversham club, one in Mosgiel and one in Dunedin, taking in the Pineapple track. For the first time in many years, we had to cancel Saturday, run/walk, after inclement weather, caused flooding at the clubrooms, for the second time in two years. Otago Road Race championships, Taieri was represented by Liam Cuddie, 1st U11 Boys, and Tom Cockerill, 1st in the Open walk.
An enjoyable social occasion was organised by Pam, “Fear Factor night” this was an evening with a difference, but excellent for club spirit, a lot of fun was had by all! Marshalling duties, the members rallied around to fulfil all the duties required, with an emphasis on the Edmond Cup event at Wingatui – Well done all! For a great effort on the day!
Mud sweat & Tears has not happened for us this year, now under new management, whether we are asked to be involved, is a question yet to be answered. If we do not get the call, it will be a lost opportunity as a
fundraiser, we will need to look elsewhere.
Kids Cross Country, This year we hosted the fourth event of the series, with an entry of 85, the highest numbers thus far over the series, it turned out to be another successful promotion by the club. The low number of 12 & 13 year olds was a disappointment, but something to work on for next year. Thank you all who helped on the day, it was so heartening to see everyone working so well as a smoothly oiled team.
After such a wet, cold winter, it seemed a pity to welcome with joy, the spring, and sadly, the end of the 2017 winter season, I am sure all the runners and walkers will agree that we have one of the best clubs in terms of friendship and fun. We can surely look forward to similar in 2018, and hopefully some more growth in membership.
