Department of Public Instruction. Technical education and Schools of Arts. 1883-1892, ' QSA A/16251.

Letter from Dudley Eglinton, Secretary of the School of Arts to J.G.Anderson, Under Secretary, Department ofPublic Instruction, 30 January 1883. Top & Letter No. 492/83.

Referring to your interview with Mr Douglas and Professor Pepper, I am instructed to say that the Committee of the School of Arts Technical Classes are anxious to know if the services of Professor Pepper can in any way be made available for the instruction of either Pupil Teachers or of any persons in the employment of the Department of Public Instruction.

Professor Pepper is willing to organise a class on Saturday morning at which teachers could attend. The fees are one guinea a quarter, and if the Department is willing to co-operate with the Committee, every facility will be afforded for the teaching both of elementary chemistry and of practical sciences such as would be useful to teachers for the purpose of imparting instruction by object lessons.

The Committee have fitted up a small laboratory at the School of Arts for Professor Pepper, and the necessary appliances for teaching chemistry are available.

I enclose a syllabus of Professor Pepper's course of Lectures in order to indicate the class of subjects which would be dealt with.

The Committee believe that Professor Pepper is eminently fitted for imparting instruction in the Science of Common Things and that this might be made a most useful adjunct in the training of masters and of pupil-teachers.

Letter from Douglas, President of the Brisbane School of Arts to the Treasurer and Minister for Public Instruction, 3 November 1882. Top & letter No. 5294/82.

In reference to our conversation on a late occasion, when I had the honor of calling on you, I am authorised by the Committee of this Institution to inform you that the evening classes for Technical Instruction are now fairly organised and that we have ninety-eight pupils in attendance. In addition to these arrangements have been made for Classes in Elementary Chemistry and Modelling.

The Minister for Works has kindly given us the temporary use of an unoccupied building at the rear of the School of Arts for this purpose [classes] and we now feel that we shall be able to make an effective commencement.
