Energy Saver options for households

There are many great reasons to invest in energy saving appliances. Not only will you be helping the environment, there are great rebates and subsidies available.

The State Government offers a number of energy rebates for low income households, families, people on life support, people with medical energy needs, and people in short term financial crisis.

Visit the NSW Government's Energy Saver website to learn more – energysaver.nsw.gov.au

Small businesses can also benefit from online training courses and subsidised LED lights to replace halogen down lights.

With the cost of energy increasing, improving the efficiency of our energy usage has more than just environmental benefits.

Art Deco delights displayed in Murwillumbah

The National Gallery of Australia will soon launch the travelling exhibition Art Deco from the National Collection: The World Turns Modern. The national tour will begin at the Tweed Regional Gallery

& Margaret Olley Art Centre in Murwillumbah, a town with its own rich Art Deco heritage.

First appearing in France prior to World War I, the Art Deco style influenced the design of jewellery, fashion, furniture and vehicles, alongside all manner of everyday objects.

The exhibition reflects on the Art Deco aesthetic in all facets of art, design and lifestyle during the period and includes a broad array of media such as painting, sculpture, prints and drawings, poster design and decorative art.

“It is a great pleasure to bring this exhibition to so many venues in Australia, in towns with their own impressive Art Deco credentials,”

said Nick Mitzevich, Director of the National Gallery of Australia.

“The National Gallery has collected important Art Deco material for more than 40 years, and we now hold a significant collection, covering a wide range of media, both Australian and international. This exhibition contains a rich and considered selection and I am delighted that we have been able to include paintings, works on paper, sculpture and examples of fashion from the period.”

All are invited to attend the opening celebrations of Art Deco from the National Collection with guest speaker Nick Mitzevich, Director, National Gallery of Australia on Friday 31 May at 6pm. The exhibition will be open until Sunday 25 August.

To complement the NGA travelling exhibition, the Tweed Regional Gallery invited visual artists of the region to respond to the Art Deco

architectural features of Murwillumbah. Their work is currently being displayed in Façade: Art Deco of Murwillumbah at the new satellite space Gallery DownTown, an annexe of Tweed Regional Gallery, situated in the vibrant M|Arts Precinct in Murwillumbah’s CBD.

Ruth Della, Curator at Gallery DownTown said that artists reacted enthusiastically to the Expression of Interest for the exhibition issued by the Gallery.

“There was such a great response and we’re thrilled so many artists embraced this theme. It’s wonderful that the Art Deco features have been discovered and reinterpreted by artists from our region. This exhibition will be a great complement to the NGA’s touring exhibition, and really highlight some stunning features of Murwillumbah,” she said.

Art Deco from the National Collection: The World Turns Modern is supported by the Australian Government through the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program.

Future plans for a new Tweed Pound at Eviron

Following its meeting on 4 April 2019, Council resolved to move forward with a planning proposal to build a brand new pound on the Council-owned site at No. 751 Eviron Road, Eviron.

The decision followed a lengthy process to identify a new pound site that met key criteria including being in a central location, causing as little disturbance to neighbours as possible and being on flood-free land.

The project team is now in the process of designing a new modern facility for the Tweed which is expected to be ready to open its doors in around 18 months.

The current Tweed Pound will be closed at the end of August this year because the facility is within the area approved for the expansion of Council’s waste operations at Stotts Creek.

“We believe that the timing of the relocation of the Pound and expansion of the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre is in the best interests of ratepayers because it’s the most affordable option,”

Council’s General Manager Troy Green said.

“We are improving the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre so we reduce the amount of the community’s waste being sent to landfill and recover more right here in the Tweed through, for example, a new facility to process organic waste from the green bin.

“This will help to limit the impact on ratepayers from the recent, well-publicised increases to the cost of processing recyclables being experienced globally as well as the introduction of a new waste levy in Queensland from July,” Mr Green said.

Director for Planning and Regulation Vince Connell said Council is taking all necessary steps to ensure that there will be no impact on the levels of care for any impounded animals between the current Pound closing and the new facility opening.

“We are currently investigating options such as the use of existing private animal boarding facilities within Tweed Shire during the interim period. We expect to be in a position to publicly announce these alternative arrangements in the upcoming weeks and well in advance of the closure of the current facility later this year.”

No permanent staffing will be affected by this decision.

Businesses learn how best to display their wares

Council recently held a visual merchandising workshop in partnership with the NSW Small Business Commissioner.

The workshop showcased local and global examples of best practice retail design and visual merchandising techniques to an audience of local businesses.

Topics included brand identity, shopfront presentation and window displays, in store merchandising and creating captivating shopping experiences.

Five businesses also won a fantastic opportunity to have a visual assessment with consultant Charmaine Corcoran.
