Somoa Swim Series by Rosa Montague
The Samoan Swim Series was great fun! It was fabulous to get away from Melbourne at the end of July to go to 28 degrees every day and soft south pacific breezes. There were about 120 Aussies and Kiwis (mostly Kiwis) swimming in the series of 4km or 2km races which took place on 3 consecutive days at different places round the island of Upolu.
Apart from Patrick Gallagher and myself, Gina Harris and Amander Flaherty from Cousins Travel were there and swimming well. I saw Craig Magnussen from Hornby Masters and Kim and Colin, a couple from Byron Bay Surf Club whom I met on a Swimtrek trip in Sardinia last year. Swimming is a small world!
The Aussies did really well – a 14 year old boy from Brisbane took out the 4km overall with Craig coming 3rd and Colin 4th. I was 2nd in the 2km overall for women and was presented with a wild looking Samoan sword made out of wood. I was so surprised that Australian quarantine let me bring it home. Not sure what the AFP would make of it.
The swim series people, including a brilliant AusAID helper called Nicole, organised trips and lunches and dinners and all sorts of entertainment (fire dancers etc) for us. We even marched behind a police band to an opening ceremony for the series. The only moment of worry was the breakfast (would it come?!) on the second day when the hotel couldn’t cope with all the hungry swimmers trying to wolf down
bacon and eggs at 6am. Especially as the Australian Air Force were in town and they were keen eaters too.
The Samoans were charming and helpful and thoroughly bemused by Patrick and myself swimming 1.5 km to Namua Island, where we were staying after the series and sending our bags by boat. I really recommend this series and I would add on a trip round Upolu and Savaii afterwards. Cousins will be organising trips next year if you are not keen on freelancing. Website for the series is www.samoaswimseries.com
Don't mess with Rosa - especially when she is armed!
Tassie Short Course
Suwito, John Richards and David Kellam travelled to Tassie for the Short Course MStas at Hobart pool. Suwito had a great meet with a win in the 100m breaststroke.
MSV Short Course:
57 pointers raced last weekend! Many primed and fit to race whilst a few of us are coming back from injury and illness. Well down to all Pointers who competed.
100m x100 with ULTRAMAN:
Sept 6, Outdoor Pool MSAC 4pm
$10 pp/Free pool entry - funds going to Swimtember Alfred Hospital
We are hoping to get a fair few pointers swimming the 100 x100 with Craig. Craig, the owner of Aquashop, is in training for the Hawaii Ultraman in November - 10km swim, 420km ride and 84km run! Yikes.
Fins, Pullbouy and paddles welcome but there are Pointers who may just do the entire 100x100…. stay tuned for updates on who post 100 x100 Sept 6!
See you at Short Course and the Emerald post meet.
