I shall be always present, wherever thou goest, I shall witness my revenge.
I enjoy it already in my mind.
The thunderbolts already encircle thee.

For him alone I lived, for him I shall die.

WILL GIVE A
Short Series of Pianoforte Recitals
At the MELBOURNE TOWN HALL, commencing on MONDAY NEXT. . .
p rogramme. The SECOND CONCERT of the Season
1- Overture " Flying Dutchman " Wagner.
WILL TAKE PLACE IN THEIn this picturesque work is wonderfully depicted the breezy buoyancy of the ocean. The wind whistles through the shrouds, huge mountainous billows come rolling by, upon them furiously hisses the rain, and in the midst of the storm is heard the passionate cry of the curse-haunted mariner, doomed for evermore to sail the bitter seas, until he find release in the love of a woman "faithful unto death." Amid the fury of the hurricane the still small voice of hope is for a moment heard, only to be drowned by fresh and fiercer outbursts. The fated ship is hurried on without rest from scene to scene, while ever deeper grows his despair. But even as this reaches its culmination, the theme of hope, of redemption, enters. In vain the hostile forces hurl themselves against it ; it grows ever louder and louder—a final outburst of the hostile elements, and it swells into a triumphal passionate certainty, overwhelming all else. On the mighty sweep of the united strings, mounting like a surging ocean billow, the weird theme of the "Flying Dutchman" is upwards borne, to lose itself in the quiet peace of woman's love :--
Das unbeschreibliche Hier ist gethan ; Das Ewig-Weibliche Zieht uns hinan.

4. Enbante from Sp11lphOliv in E Minor (No. 5) Tschaikowsky.
The stillness of the languid summer-night is surcharged with tragic melancholy. Are these two lovers, who on the eve of endless parting pour forth their souls to one another in fervid animate strains, which seem to sum up all that the world contains of longing, tenderness, and despair ? The violins mount up, impassioned, as though the mere force of mortal desire were enough to burst the trammels of fate. Then they sink away in broken sighs and half-uttered phrases. The clarionet and bassoon murmur plaintively over the throbbing strings, like night-voices heard amid pulsing wavelets:
Nought is wake But the waves that pour Noiselessly
On a noiseless shore.
Their tones are caught up and repeated with growing vehemence by strings and wood-wind ; they change character and become full of wild agitation. With a harsh discordant roar the frightful morrow discloses itself, full of hatred and menace. The horrid nightmare vanishes suddenly as it appeared. More fondly, more passionately the lovers abandon themselves to their transitory dream :
Sighing he spake—"Ah, sweet, that it were so ! That here in quiet night our souls might flow In kisses forth, and mix with the naught air ;
That we might die, I tangled in thy hair, As never lover had so glorious shroud, Thou in mine arms, the sun hid in a cloud :
That we might cease, even as evening's breath That is, and is not,—melting Into death As shapes of frost melt into tender rain, Unheeding, and unheeded, with no pain."
