[email protected] – Comments Welcome

Welcome all to 2014 – and a new year of bowls in Zone10. With 31st January being the deadline for bowlers, clubs and zones to submit their input regarding the Discussion Paper for Zone/Region Boundaries, it will be now just a matter of time for the RNSWBA/Bowls NSW to digest, to make public the results and then to formalise a plan to move forward with any proposals. I am sure that we are all waiting

with baited breath to see what, if anything transpires from this and what will be the future of bowls in NSW and in particular, Zone 10.

Wednesday 12th February will see the Zone 10 Annual General Meeting being held at Dundas Bowling Club commencing at 7.00pm. Our Zone relies on member interest to survive and if current trends at meetings are any indication, we are currently on a respirator, in urgent need of a blood transfusion and

the undertakers are circling like vultures!!!! The time required to ensure your Zone stays healthy is minimal – but vital. Put you hand up to be a part of a Zone that has an immense amount of talent in the

bowling ranks and is regarded highly in NSW bowls – you would be very welcome!!

At this stage, we welcome the following unopposed appointments for the 2014 Zone 10 Management Committee –

President – Kevin McCarthy (Dundas Sports) Senior Vice President – Bill Sutcliffe (Denistone Sports)

Vice President – Ron Brown (Parramatta RSL) Secretary – Michael Schwarcz (West Pennant Hills)

Treasurer – Warren Phillips (West Pennant Hills) Honorary Auditor – Don Stubbin (West Pennant Hills)

Publicity Officer – Mark Waters

It is when we get to the Committees - Match/Greens, Selection, Umpires & Coaches – is when the

“sounds of silence” are deafening. With 5 positions available for each of these committees, there were 3 nominations for Match, 2 for Selection, 4 for Umpires & none for Coaches – 9 positions filled out of 20

required…..how many bowlers are there in Zone 10???

The 1st of the State/Zone Championships will commence Saturday 22nd February with the 1st Round of the State Triples being played at Carlingford, Northmead, The Hills & Wenty Leagues and the Zone

Triples being played at Pennant HIlls

The full draws can be found on Zone 10 website www.zone10.org.au –

State Triples - http://zone10.org.au/Triples/2014/State/2014%20State%20triple%20Draw.pdf Zone Triples - http://zone10.org.au/Triples/2014/zone/2014%20Zone%20triple%20Draw.pdf Also a final reminder that the State/Senior/Presidents Singles close FRIDAY 7th FEBRUARY as does the nominations for Pennants

It is with regret that we advise that Jock Milward has tendered his resignation as Junior Academy Coach after making a decision to move to another Zone. He will be sorely missed, being totally committed since accepting that role. He goes with our sincere thanks and best wishes. The search is now on to identify a successor to his role – hands up anyone??

Sunday 9th February sees the 2014 Under 25 Round Robin being played at Fairymeadow Bowling Club.

Zone 10 will have the following representatives – good luck guys!

Sunday 2nd March, The Allan Buckley Shield will be played at Carlingford Bowling Club. This is an annual event played against our neighbours Zone 9 and is very keenly each year

Taren Point bowlers Wayne Turley and John Green were named as joint Bowlers of the Year after their outstanding 2013. Both achieved the remarkable 'grand slam' in side events. They were members of the Taren Point sides that were champions in the Grade 1 State Pennant and the Bowls NSW Club Challenge Gold Division. They were also members of the Zone 13 side to have won the Bowls NSW Inter-Zone Sides Championship and the NSW State Side that claimed the Alley Shield, winning the Australian Sides Championship. Turley and Green were also outstanding in team events, claiming the NSW State Pairs and, along with evergreen Reg McCulla, were runners up in the 2013 NSW State Triples.

Ben Twist (St Johns Park) and Ray Pearse (Alexandria-Erskineville) were the other finalists for Bowler of the Year.

Matt Blackburn (Belrose) was awarded the 2013 Most Improved Bowler of the Year. He was a

member of the Belrose side that finished as runner up in the 2013 CashBack City State Pennants and a member of the team that won the 2013 NSW State Fours Championship. He was the 2013 Zone 9 Singles Champion and earned selection in the 2013 City side.

Josh Andriske (West Dubbo), Ben Glasson (Mt Lewis) and Isaac Rayner (Wagga Rules) were the finalists for the Most Improved Bowler of the Year. (Rayner became the youngest winner of a State Championship when he teamed with David Ferguson to win the Champion of Club Champion Pairs).

James Reynolds (Tathra Beach) became the first bowler to win consecutive Disability Bowler of the Year awards. Reynolds was a member of the Tathra Beach Grade 1 side that claimed the Zone 7 Grade 1 Pennant, was the 2013 NSW Wheelchair Sports Singles and Pairs Champion, won the 2013 Zone 7 Singles and was a quarter-finalist in the NSW State Singles. Chris Nairn (Picton) was the other finalist in the Disability Bowler of the Year category.

Peter Hughes (Engadine) was named as the 2013 Senior Bowler of the Year. Hughes was the 2013 NSW State Senior Pairs Champion, was runner up in the Zone 13 Senior Singles and was a member of the NSW Senior State Side that was undefeated in the Australian Senior Sides Championship.

Hughes edged out Ray Jankelowitz (Double Bay), Crawford Linton (Belrose) and Miro Perovic (Terrigal) for the award.

Dylan Skinner (Mt Lewis) was awarded the Junior Bowler of the Year. Skinner was a member of the NSW Junior Side that won the Boys Champion State and Overall Champion State, claiming a silver medal in the Australian Junior Pairs and a bronze medal in the Australian Junior Singles. In the NSW State Junior Championships Skinner was the leading bowler, claiming the State Junior Singles and

(5)

State Junior Fours Championships. He capped his year with a win in the NSW State Triples

Championship becoming, at the time, the youngest player to have won a NSW State Championship.

Dylan Cuthbert (Merimbula-Imlay), Luke Jones (Evans Head) and Corey Wedlock (Urunga) were the other finalists in the Junior Bowler of the Year.

Wayne Turley received further recognition, with a presentation marking his having reached 200 test appearances for NSW. Turley has had a sensational (and continuing) representative career both for NSW and Australia. He has been a member of NSW State Sides that have won the Australian Sides Championship on a number of occasions. He has also claimed major honours for Australia having won gold medals at Commonwealth Games and Asia-Pacific Games.

Bowls NSW Bowls Operation Manager Michael Beaumont puts out a regular newsletter, JACK, which has a host of interesting information on bowls (and other things), a bit of humour, a bit of scuttlebutt

but overall, in my opinion, a good read. If you do not already receive this, go straight to the man [email protected]

I am sure that you will enjoy each issue!!!!

Many Clubs within Zone 10 are now well into their trial matches for the upcoming Pennants season, commencing 22nd March and also many have started Club Championships. If you are lucky enough to win a Championship, make sure your Club’s Publicity Officer sends the details to me, together with your Championship photo, and it will be published both here “In the Zone” & also be sent to Bowls NSW to be added to their Zone Bowls News.

Castle Hill Bowling Club conducts an annual event between the Club’s Women and Men Champions, known as the Battle of the Sexes.

The Winners of each of the main championship events of singles, pairs, triples and fours play each other, along with the runners-up in the pairs, triples and fours.

In 2014, this coincided with the official opening of our fully renovated no. 2 green on 12th January, by the The Hills Mayor, Michelle Byrne.

Castle Hill Men were victorious with a 112 – 70 win, with our Ladies managing to win 2 of the 7 rinks.

After the event, trophies for 2013 were awarded and then members and guests enjoyed dinner on the green (our no. 1 green, which was taken out the next day for renovation).
