Simulation is an indispensable technology in robotics; However, the reality gap prevents many simulated solutions from being perfectly translated into reality. We present studies that first quantify and then benchmark the reality gap when comparing popular robot simulators with a real ground truth collected using motion capture.

We then present a promising new method for bridging the reality gap that uses an online sim-to-real approach that uses different physics to iteratively narrow the gap and improve the simulation environment using data collected from the real system. Innovation is demonstrated through the ability to build customized robots on demand in the field.
