Review of the Australian Curriculum:

Languages — Phase 2

Purpose

To inform schools that the Australian Curriculum: Languages — Phase 2 (German, Indonesian, Korean, Modern Greek and Spanish) is available for public consultation until 9 August 2022 inclusive.

Background

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has reviewed the P–10 Australian Curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of students and teachers now and into the future.

On 1 April 2022, national, state and territory education ministers endorsed the revised version of the P–10 Australian Curriculum, Version 9.0. This included the Australian Curriculum: Languages

— Phase 1: Chinese, French, Italian and Japanese.

The Australian Curriculum: Languages — Phase 2: German, Indonesian, Korean, Modern Greek and Spanish second-language pathways, both Prep–Year 10 and Years 7–10 sequences, are now available for public consultation at www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/consultation/languages.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is leading the review and has extensive information on its website. This includes terms of reference, research findings, a process paper, factsheets and FAQs.

Information

The first phase of the review of the Australian Curriculum: Languages produced a working, generic framework to guide the review of second-language pathway curriculum. This framework includes introductory text, year/band level descriptions, achievement standards and content descriptions.

The framework’s content, as exemplified in the Australian Curriculum — Phase 1 Languages, has been approved by the ACARA Board and endorsed by education ministers.

ACARA’s public consultation is open until 9 August 2022. A Queensland response to the proposed curriculum will be submitted to ACARA by August 2022.

The public will be able to review the proposed Languages documents and complete an online survey at https://curriculumstagingbos.azurewebsites.net/consultation/languages-surveys to provide feedback on proposed changes to German, Indonesian, Korean, Modern Greek and Spanish.
