President's Report

1992 promises to be a year of continuing change and development at Roseworthy. The last year has been the first with Roseworthy as part of The University of Adelaide. While there have no doubtbeen substantial 'teething'problems, in the main, these have been overcome,

From a ROCA perspective there are two main issues which will need to be addressed by your Executive Committee. They are:

.

Roseworthy College Pty. Ltd.

o Future directions for ROCA.

Roseworthy College Pty. Ltd. is a wholly bwned subsidiary of The University of Adelaide. It was incorporated to take charge of the residential facilities at Roseworthy and to develop the college for the benefit of the students. It is this residential nexus with the educational facility which makes Roseworthy such a place for so many old students.

The objects and purpose of the company are most succinctly set out in the incorporation document and

I

believe are worth repeating here. They are:

L. To provide affordable accommodation of an appropriate standard for students and staff of the Roseworthy campus of The University of Adelaide;

2.

To provide facilities for residents of the Roseworthy campus which are designed to encourage and stimulate their educational, social and cultural developmen!

3.

To provide residents of the Roseworthy campus with an environment inducive to the pursuit of

academic excellencel

4.

To take special cognisance of the unique needs of the Australian rural community; and

5.

To raise funds for the achievement of the above objects.

The company is contrslled by a Board of Directors.

Mr Don Barkley of Gawler River has been appointed

as its first Chairman. Don is currentlv Chairman of the District Council of Light and is probably well- known to many Old Collegians.

Alan Alcock (1970-73 and ROCA vice president) has been appointed as the first principal of the College.

As a result of that appointment Alan also becomes a Director and Board Member. At this stage I am representing ROCA on the Board. Other Board members include:

Professor Harold Woolhouse - Dean of the Faculty Mr Peter Burke - Honorary Treasurer (who was appointed by the Registrar of The University of Adelaide)

Mr Oscar Jones - (who has been appointed by the University Council).

Ir

addition there are three other Board positions yet to be filled - two people representing environmental, agricultural and cognate interests who are appointed by the Board and a resident student elected by the residents on an annual basis.

The Board is considering a wide range of issues including fees, policy, the designation of grounds and upgrading facilities.

ROCA regards the Roseworthy Campus as being quite unique in that the provision of accommodation for students is vital. Therefore ROCA takes the stance in relation to the company that no country student should be precluded from undertaking a course at The University of Adelaide - Roseworthy Campus on the grounds that they cannot afford the cost of accom- modation. We will push the company to offer afford- able accommodation and where financial difficulties arise, to provide some rebates or assistance. This could come in many forms. However, in order to achieve ROCA's goals we will be looking to Old

Page 2 ROCADIGEST

(3)

Collegians for support in establishing bursaries and scholarships. More on that later.

The second issue which confronts ROCA is the future direction it ought to be taking, bearing in mind the amalgamation with The University of Adelaide.

ROCA membership has always been based on attend- ance at the College. The constitution requires an applicant for membership to have completed at least one year. With the greater interchange of subjects between both the Roseworthy Campus, the Waite Campus and North Terrace, it may well be that only a small percentage of students become eligible to join ROCA. Perhaps the whole criteria for membership may need changing, together with the marketing of ROCA. A sub-committee of the executive will be considering this matter over the coming year and would welcome comments from members.

Lr this regard if you have any comments, advice or news that you wish to raise with members of your committee, I am sure they would only be too pleased to hear from you.

Finally, I look forward to catching up with the Eyre Peninsula people in the New Year.

A.G. (BARDY) McFARLANE President

Scott Dolling Receives 1991

Award of Merit

Prominent agricultural scientist, Scott Dolling, has been awarded the ROCA Award of Merit for 1991' Scott Dolling has had an outstanding research and administration career in the area of sheep breeding and genetics.

For over f.orty yearc, Scott's work with bodies such as the CSIRO, Department of Agriculture, United Na- tions and the Australian Development Assistance Bureau eamed him an international reputation.

Since his retirement from the SA Department of Agriculhrre in 1985, Scott has established a successful sheep breeding consultancy, working on projects in China, Pakistan, South Africa, Spain, France and Scotland.

Apart from the Award of Merit, his latest achievement is being elected President of COGNOSAG, an interna- tional body charged with the responsibility of the identification and naming of genes in sheep, goats and cattle.

Although much of Scott Dolling's career has been devoted to the research of complex scientific matters, his ability to communicate with the rural community, and his untiring efforts to make research results more applicable to the local farming situation, make him

one of this country's most outstanding contributors to agriculture.

Scott Dolling has always been quite an active worker for the community, particularly in organisations assisting epileptics and Aboriginal groups. He has been on the executive of the Epileptic Association of SA for the past ten years.

Scott Dolling now joins the list of thirty other distinquished agriculturalists to receive the ROCA Award of Merit.

At the Annual General Meeting of ROCA the follow-

ing people were elected:- The University of Adelaide Council has decided that Commemoration (Grad) Ceremonies can be held at the Roseworthy Campus in 1992 and 1993. The motion supporting the continuation of graduation at Roseworthy resulted from a recommendation from Faculty Board and continued pressure from the Student Union through its President, Stephen Packer.

There is, however, a catch to graduating from Roseworthy... students choosing to graduate from Roseworthy will receive a Roseworthy parchment with University endorsements, signatories etc...

students who choose to graduate at North Terrace

will receive a University parchment.

Students have already overwhelmingly supported the option of a Roseworthy graduation. Potential gradu- ating students will soon be invited to nominate the location which they have chosen.

1991 Annual Dinner

A successful dinner was held at the Adelaide Univer- sity Union on Saturday,23 September 1991. The dining room was decorated with traditional pink and black streamers and balloons, adding a festive touch.

While numbers were down on previous years,125 people who were able to attend had a most enjoyable evening.

The Award of Merit was presented to Scott Dolling by the President, Mr Bardy McFarlane. Scott's wife, Alwyn was present together with Margeret Toms and Reg Fre4ch. (Margaret and Reg were bridesmaid and best man at the Dolling's wedding in New Zealand 40 years ago).

Among the special guests were Professor Harold Woolhouse, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural &

Natural Resource Sciences and Mr and Mrs Robin Steed. Both Harold and Robin were on the Award of Merit selection panel together with Dr Ian McPhail and Mr Michael Deare.

The year groups were well represented, with the 25 year ago group having members from interstate and overseas attending. I've heard that group had a very successful picnic reunion on the Sunday at

Roseworthy. Geoff Gill did an excellent job organis- ing his compatriots.

We also heard from the 50 year ago group who had three representatives present - Alf Waters, Kingsley Prior and Bob Fewerheerdt.

The ten year ago group, although small in number, had some interesting tales to tell. feremy Allport was

the controlling influence inbringing this group together. It is always a highlight of the evening to find out just what these old Collegians have been up to.

On the Sunday a small group of family and friends attended the Family Day atthe Waite Institute. Ray Norton provided an excellent tour of the grounds and the old shearingbuilding and as usual provided many humorous anecdotes. Yvorure Routledge escorted guests through the Urrbrae House and gave a very enlightening outline of the life and times of Peter Waite. Our thanks to the Roseworthy Rugby Union Football Club, and especially Stephen Ball for provid- ing catering for the day.

This years dinner will be held at Roseworthy on Saturday and Sunday 26 and 27 September.

Riverland/Mal lee Reu n ion Where Are They Now?

Dinner a Success

Daryl Hicks proved to be a prince among motivators, when he addressed the thirty six Old Collegians and their partners who attended the Riverland/Mallee ROCA reunion dinner at Loxton last October.

Although not formally grouped as a ROCA branch, the Old Collegians living in the Murraylands and Riverland region of South Australia seem to gather at two-yearly intervals for a social meal and a good night out.

The gathering last year turned out to be the highlight of an otherwise disappointing farming year.

Guest speaker, Daryl Hicks (RDA 1960), kept the group glued to his every word with an outstanding motivational account of his football experiences with Sturt and Central Districts.

Daryl also relived his variety of experiences as a student at RAC during the late 1950's, and his non- football life after graduation as an agricultural teacher, proprietor of Freesia Icecream, corporate fitness consultant, political candidate and lobbyist, and business entrepreneur.

The dinner attracted Old Collegians from far and wide. Andrew Staniford (RDA 1975) and family made the trip up from Crafers for the weekend, while the trio of Ray Farrelly (BAppSc 1.990), Peter Lewis (RDA 1962) and Dale Manson (RDA 1975) made a mad dash up and back from the City that evening.

ROCA President, Bardy McFarlane, combined the trip with a business commitment, and lingered in the Riverland for several days prior to retuming to the legal rat-race of Adelaide.

The organisers were also quite pleased to see a group of new Roseworthy graduates at the function. Aden Brock, Ashley Lipman, Nina Radomi, Richard Roberts, Craig Swanbury and Peter Traeger were all experiencing their first ROCA function.

The next Riverland/Mallee dinner is planned for sometime during 1993.

A new segment in which we look at some of our past heroes and where 1992 finds them.

John Dutty (RDA 53.55)

John is one of the more academicallv inclined Roseworthians and only rested from the books after adding a BVft from the Sydney University to his name.

He is a tennis fanatic and carries a tennis_raquet with him just in case. He is also a movie buff ind wiles away the ljttle free time he has watching the flickering images of bygone days.

However to put it in perspective, John has always packed a lot into his working life and this is still the case today. He lives on the CSIRO's farm at Werribee, Victoria and is the official keeper of the animals.

He works at the CSIRO's Division of Animal Health in Parkville and 80% of his time is devoted to communi- cations and spreading the word about the work of his divisiorg and about 20% of his effort is still devoted to scientific research. He is beavering away on Annual Rye Grass Toxicity and other plant associated toxins in heliohope and lupins. Directly and indirectly, ]ohn has been involved with ARGT since the initial Aus- tralian outbreak at Black Springs in the mid 50's.

]ohn is also a specialist on reproductive disorders of animals and helped to develop the vibriosis vaccine for cattle back in the 70's. He's also worked on foot rot in cattle and in 1980 in conjunction with a Mel- boume Vet School lecturer, published a book'on calving difficulties. Before this he had many nights of limited sleep dealing with hundreds of cases of malpresentation.

Before L965 and his Victorian experience, John was a specialist vet officer with the SADA working on reproductive diseases and infertility in cattle, sheep and pigs. He was also involved with the Artificial Insemination Centre at Northfield.

He worked in the UK with the Ministry of Agriculture on TB eradication and looking at AI centres during part of

63/e.

He managed to travel from Land's End Page

to |ohn O'Groates in winter which is no small effort.

John has always been keen on football and played in

the A's at RAC and for various teams after this. |ohn has a penchant for giving the old Vics a bit of stick and it's amazing how regularly he tums up at Mel- boume functions wearing a Crows scarfe and defend- ing the cause with alacrity and dexterity.

John Evans (RDA 65-67)

John is a character in the extreme and was one of the more vigorous RAC students of his day in the sport- ing, extra curricular and stirring departments. He played a vigorous game of football and managed to keep the Anglo -Saxon agricultural engineering personnel on their toes.

For a couple of years after graduation, fohn worked on the land in the South-East as a jackaroo and man- ager.

He is warmly remembered for his time in ABC radio and television in South Australia. During the late 60's and early 70's he presented the 5CK breakfast pro- gram and was a well recognised identity in northem and westem parts of SA. His running gags with Port Lincoln's Ken Holden were legendary but this was only part of the enjoyable unpredictability of the program. Jack Noone managed to make it through to enjoy his retirement in spite of John's antics.

John also worked on the SA Country Hour and as

producer of the South Australian TV Landline pro- gram. He was a regular on the TV Weather and later worked as a Melboume based reporter for the ABC Rural Dept current affairs program'Country-wide' In1978 he was frontman for This Day Tonight in Perth.

John became the manager of Melbourne's 3LO and during this period won an Imperial Trust Fellowship to the United Kingdom to study how the Brits net- worked radio programs.

In March 1982 John joined the Australian Wheat

Board as marketing Services Manager and soon after this became the manager for International Market Development. he travelled extensively in this role to Russia, China and the Middle-East.

John now runs his own communications company called Pegasus and has just gained a foothold in the Sydney market. He works with corporations in targeting specific audiences. He also sails and is on the board of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

|ohn said that one of greatest memories was when he managed to get.through on the line to |on Lamb on the SAN's Talk Back Garden Program and flummox him by asking a question about what is the best bed for rooting daisy in. Jory an old work mate of John's managed to keep going but only with difficulty (with apologies to our more genteel readers).

John is as effervescent as ever and if you ever need a PR job, give him abell in Melbourne.
