A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The 1972 annualgeneral meeting and reunion dinner is shaping up as one
ofthe
biggest and best ever held by ROCA.As was mentioned
in
the last Digest, this year's guest list has been extendedto
include 1971and
"
1972
tlmd
year students. This move is expectedto
swell the number attendingto
at least 150.The new greyhound centre at Angle Park has been chosen as the venue. When
you
seeit I think
youwill
agreeit
is one of the best we have had yet. Parking is no problem at all, and the management has been of great assistancein
making arrangements (especiallywith
the menu). The Adelaide Greyhound Raceway runs
off
Days Road, Angle Park, on the section between Regency Road and Grand JunctionRoad.

COLLEGE CHATTER (from Cliff Hoooer)
During June my wife and
I
visted the NorthernTerritory,
where we met upwith
alot
of Old Collegians.Our
first
contact was Tony Clancy, who is now back in Darwinwith
theAnimal Industry
branchof
the N.T.Administration,
where he is mainly concernedwith
the publicationof
news and reports.Tony
and hiswife
entertained us very well, andtook
usout to
the local research station where we had ourfirst
look at somebuffalo.
We spent a day
with
Mr and Mrs John Hayes at the Beatrice Research Station, where John isin
charge. Hisinformation
on thework
being donewith
cattle and pasturesput
mefurther in
the picture. This was followed by a
trip to
a mobile slaughtering works outin
the bush which was handling 45 buffalo a day. Before leaving Da-rWin We also saW
Keith
Pattinson and hiswife
for a few miflutes. We came across Jim Hughes at the Darwin airport
just
beforeflying out to
the Kimberleys, where Jim is stationed. He met us again at Katherine. andtook
us outto
the research station there, whereI
mademy first
contactwith
TownsvilleLucerne
my description would be'like
wireweed gone abit dry', but it
is getting resultsin
certain areas. We spent an enjoyable day
with Mr
and Mrs Teg Donellan whilein
Katherine. Teg is stillin
the vegetable game, irrigating from the river and gradually extending his area. Hetook
me downto
seesome cattle on a nearby station.
At
Alice Springs, Rod Hoddertook
us over the research station, the slaughter works, and generally put the local storyto
us. Rod is at present mainly concernedwith
pastures and the grazing behaviourof
cattlein
the wide open spaces, so he spends much of his time out bush.It
was a most enjoyabletrip,
and Mrs Hooper joinswith
mein
saying 'thankyou' to
our hosts. We got alot
moreout of
thetrip
through your help,'andI
hope ourinformation
on Roseworthy wasof
interest to you.
In August, Rex Krause leaves the College
to
take an appointmentin
the Departmentof
Agriculture.Rex has been a staff member
for
many years, has done muchto put
Roseworthy College on the map, andwill
be remembered by many Old Collegiansfor
assistance given.I
am sure everyone joinswith
me in wishingf.ex,-Vatda "and-famityalfthe
bestirrlheir-new
life.I
received a note from Jack James, who hasjust
celebrated his 73rdbirthday.
Jack has been a mem- berof
ROCAfor
53 years; and had 42 yearc in Government and semiCovernment service beforeretiring
in
1962. Since then he has toured extensively throughout Australia by Pioneer bus. Unfortunately he received a knock on the headfrom
a t'alting beam recently,but from
the toneof
irisletter I
gather that he is nearly backto
normal.Ian Watt writes from Goroka, New Guinea, and mentions Phil Reddin, David Kidd, John Cooper and Graham
l{ady,
so we still have good representationin
those parts.The positions
filled by
1971 R.D.A.T. graduateswill
probably beof
interest:- John Chappel, Education Department;lachlan Mclaren,
managing a beefproperty;Trevor Bolto,
returnedto
home property; Mick Wake, life assurance; Noel Christophersen,Army;Darryl
Gravestock, Departmentof
Agriculture; Brian Ashton, appliedfor
positionwith
Bureauof Agricultural
Economics;Tom Yeatman, Department of Agriculture; Ian Black, with
a geological survey party; Peter Bowey, R.A.C. staff ; Peter Carroll,in
New Guinea;Chris Olsen, Teachers' College;David Spencer, Teachers' College; Ian Pickett, returned to Department of Aericulture.R.O.C.A. DIGEST August, 1972
