Welcome
Welcome to the Royal Darwin Hospital.
No one chooses to come into hospital and our objective, like yours, is your speedy return to health.
The purpose of this "Patients and Visitors Guide" is to provide · you with information on the hospital's history, the various services available to you during your stay and in particular, our
"house rules." Observance of these rules will assist in making your stay with us as pleasant
and comfortable as possible.
PATIENT INFORMATION
EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES
The Education Department provides an educational service with Pre and Primary School teachers visiting each morning Monday to Friday.
Aboriginal Adult Education is als~ available.
GIFTS OF FOOD, DRINKS, SWEETS ETC.

Visitors are asked to consult with the Ward Sister before giving patients any articles of food or drink.· Giving children lollies is discouraged.
MEDICAL CERTIFICATES
If you require a medical certificate, for the period of your hospitalisation, please advise your doctor well before discharge.
LIBRARY FACILITIES

A selection of fiction and non-fiction books (courtesy NT Library Service) is available, for patient borrowing, from the hospital library by arrangement through the Ward Sister.
The Red Cross library service trolley visits the Wards on a regular basis.
Mail will be delivered to you. The correct address is:

LEAVING HOSPITAL PREMISES
You must remain within the hospital premises until you are discharged unless special arrangements are made with the Ward Sister.
If you leave the ward please advise the Ward Sister.
MEDICINES (TABLETS, MIXTURES, OINTMENT OR OTHER DRUG PREPARATIONS)
Should you have any medicines, tablets or other drugs with you on admission please hand them to the Ward Sister.
NEWSPAPERS

Newspapers are delivered to all hospital areas daily.
_ If you are confined to bed arrangements for delivery may be made with the Ward Sister.
PARKING
Public car parks are available on the hospital grounds. There is no provision for you to park your vehicle in hospital grounds for the period of your hospitalisation.
PATIENT IDENTIFICATION
An important factor is the plastic bracelet, placed on your wrist at admission, which must be worn during your stay in hospital.
PATIENTS VALUABLES, INCLUDING CASH
You are requested NOT to bring valuables or large amounts of cash into hospital.
If this is unavoidable please deposit valuables for safe keeping (before arrival in the ward) with the Hospital Security Section, located in the ground floor foyer.
NO RESPONSIBILITY WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR VAWABLES OR CASH RETAINED IN THE WARD
SMOKING
·~ Patients are expected to limit smoking to cc areas set aside for that purpose.
Smoking in bed is discouraged.
SOCIAL WORKER
Should you have a personal, family or financial problem ask the Ward Sister to arrange a visit with the Social Worker.
TELEPHONES
The hospital telephone number is 20 7211. Telephone enquiries should be restricted to immediate family.
Outgoing calls may be made from public
telephones located in the central foyer of each floor.
VISITING HOURS
Adult Wards:Children's Ward:
Maternity Ward:
Intensive Care Unit and Delivery Suite:
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily Parents anytime
3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily
Next of kin may visit anytime by arrangement with Charge Nurse.
Note visiting outside the above hours is by arrangement only.
In the interests of patient care (your own or another patient in the area) it may be necessary for staff to request your visitors to leave the Ward.
It is less tiring to patients if visitors are restricted to two at a time.
Long visits can be tiring and visitors are encouraged to stay short periods only.
Visiting children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult.
TELEVISION AND RADIO SETS
Permission for use must be obtained from the, Ward Sister.Small radio sets are permitted if equipped with an ear plug.
Television sets, maximum screen size 46cm, equipped with ear plug are permitted, with restrictions, in some wards.
Before use, television sets must be checked for safety by hospital staff.
