Editorial

The papers in this section of Volume 20 emerged from contributions to the 2014 Information Systems Foundations (ISF) Workshop held at the Australian National University on 2-3 October 2014. This workshop was the seventh in a series, begun in 1999 by Kit Dampney at Macquarie University and continued biennially from 2002 at the ANU, focussing on the theoretical foundations of the discipline of information systems. The theme of the workshop was “The value and evaluation of information and related theories and theorising in the discipline”.

Following their selection, the authors of the workshop papers developed them into full journal articles that were subjected to AJIS’ usual double blind peer reviewing.

The papers explore theoretical concerns as they relate to information systems. The use of Systems Theory and the principle of emergence are combined to examine the question of business value; and the use of Facet Theory to guide conceptualization to improve construct clarity. These are both fundamental issues in the justification and design of information systems and should make a useful contribution to further empirical research.

Thanks are due to all the ISF workshop participants, who as usual engaged in lively discussion of all the nine papers presented at the workshop. The audience also enjoyed the keynote speech by Ann Steward, Consultant and former Australian Government CIO (2005-2012). The assistance of colleagues in the Business Information Systems group at ANU and our review teams are gratefully acknowledged.
