Senior External Examination (SEE)
syllabuses: Ancient History and Modern History assessment topics and schedules for 2020 and 2021
Purpose
To notify schools offering Senior External Examination (SEE) syllabuses about the assessment topics and schedules in 2020 and 2021 for the following syllabuses:
• Ancient History 2019 v1.2 General Senior External Examination Syllabus (SEE)
• Modern History 2019 v1.2 General Senior External Examination Syllabus (SEE).
Key information
The Senior External Examination is a longstanding program of individual subject examinations offered to eligible Year 12 students and adult learners. It is different from the external assessment component in General subjects* in the new QCE system.
This memo relates only to assessments from 2020 for the General Senior External Examination (SEE) syllabuses for Ancient History and Modern History. These syllabuses are being
implemented with some Year 12 students and adult learners in 2019 and this memo relates to the first assessment for these syllabuses to be held in 2020.
Background
In the Senior External Examination (SEE) syllabus for Ancient History two topics from Unit 3 and two topics from Unit 4 are selected by the QCAA for assessment.
In the Senior External Examination (SEE) syllabus for Modern History, two topics from Unit 3 and two topics from Unit 4 are selected by the QCAA for assessment. For each topic, an aspect of the topic is also specified by the QCAA.
For both Ancient History and Modern History, students will complete a total of two assessments which contribute to their final subject result:
• Summative external assessment 1 (EA1): Examination (50%)
Section 1: Short response
Section 2: Essay in response to historical sources

• Summative external assessment 2 (EA2): Examination (50%)
Section 1: Combination response
Section 2: Short responses to historical sources.
Each section of the assessments is based on a different topic nominated by the QCAA.
Specifications for the examinations’ conditions are outlined in the relevant syllabuses.
