Old-Time Christmas for New Generations

This year, Foy's has provided him with a SPACESHIP so he can go back and forth to the North Pole to keep an eye on his fairies. A minute after touch-down, Santa's big boots appear down the stage chimney, followed by Santa himself, huffing and puffing, laden with toys packed in his huge peppermint-striped bag. The little figure in the cot is not reading a science fiction magazine as you might expect, but is miles away in nod land.
Santa Claus opens his big bag and begins to pull out toys from its impenetrable depths. Father Christmas now approaches the friend and tells her how pleased he is to see so many of his little friends here again this year. Of course, good old mom is around to give him an eye or a head to help with his answers.
But what to say when all a little girl wants for Christmas is for 'Mitzi' the cat to have kittens (or 'Tootsie', puppies) and for mom to let them keep them. In the last issue of "Service" there appeared a poem about women by an anonymous author. They get to work late - and go home early, and oftentimes they're really grumpy.
Once again Christmas is here and I take this opportunity, through the medium of the Service, to extend my sincere season's greetings to all leaders and staff throughout our vas+ Organization. Make the most of all that this festive season has to offer, and may health and happiness be yours for the New Year.
An Oracle in Oxford Street
The big tree that shaded it was indeed a fairy house for the "show". A swing was hanging from the tree, which was happily being moved by a flower doll. The second prize in the shop competition went to groups B and C, i.e. socks, gloves, purses, wool, laces, pharmacy and books. This entry was also awarded first prize in the Floral Emblem division by the Silver Chain judges.
Newer was the rendition of the current hit 'How Much is that Doggie in the Window'. The dog, made of everlasting things, had its tail twitched back and forth by the gramophone playing the actual tune. At the large exhibition in the town hall, I found the most original and beautiful tableau entitled 'The Good Samaritan'. It was full size. This was a big attraction, the beautiful pastel shades of the butterfly providing a glorious contrast to the yellow of the hundreds of daffodils.
There was also the Golden Coach - with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh - turning on the line. Groups E and D of the Fashion Floor combined to produce a beach bathing scene, with three bathing beauties in costumes. Departments A & G (Materials and Men's and Boys' Wear) have combined very successfully to provide a scene of the progress of Foy & Gibson (W.A.) Ltd.
Wesley Church, on the corner of Hay and William Streets, was a picture of floral beauty, and the largest display in the grounds was the "Floral Carpet." This featured Flora, the goddess of flowers, with Zephyrus, the god of wind, at their wedding.

From the Collingwood Despatch, news that LENNIE HOLLAND has become engaged to Esme Dodds, on Cup Day. LEO GRUMULAITIS (General Office, Coiling-wood) is engaged to a young lady on her way from Europe. Congratulations to DOROTHY MORRIS (Hosiery, Adelaide) who has announced her engagement to Ray Braybrook.
But to the fast-talking, ever-popular Fashion Controller, City Store, we say, with greater dignity, "Good on yer, Daddy!". BILL PHILLIPS (Grocery, Collingwood), is the proud father of a baby boy, William Rodney, born on 2 October at Airlie Hospital, Ivanhoe. Adelaide is happy to see LUDWIG MAY (Matte) and JOE EVANS (Haby.) back in the Shop.
All the best to BOB CHRISTIE (Carpets, Adelaide), who recently married Miss Eleanor Read. Plumbers, for the most part, are quiet types, and Howard Whittle, who handles pipes for City Store, is no exception. So if you should hear him refer somewhat explosively to what sounds like "The B's" - don't misjudge him.
