Surveillance Update for Notifiable STIs and BBVs in the NT. Vol. 16(1), Jan-Mar 2015 Page 3
A. Introduction
Starting from January 2015, this Surveillance Update will be changed to be published every quarter, and the focus of the report will be changed to report the surveillance data on notifiable sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood-borne viruses (BBVs) in the Northern Territory (NT) with only minimal explanatory or commentary text. Detailed analyses on the trends and patterns of disease occurrences will be covered in an annual epidemiology report which will be published separately in 2016.
The notification data used in this report were extracted from the Northern Territory Notifiable Diseases System (NTNDS) on 15 October 2015. Unless specified otherwise, all STI data are for genital infections. Notifications with a non-NT residential address were excluded from the report.
Other data used in this report include enhanced surveillance data for infectious syphilis from the NT Syphilis Register Information System, HIV notification data from the HIV/AIDS database maintained by the SHBBVU. Population data used in rate calculation are estimated resident population prepared and provided by the Health Gains Planning unit (updated in 2014), which were derived from Census data retrieved from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. All rates for 2015 were calculated using population data for 2014 because the population data for 2015 were not available at the time of the report writing.
All surveillance data of the NT presented in this report are provisional and subject to
future revision. The quarterly rates of notification presented in this report are all
crude annualised rates per 100,000 population. Where appropriate, the five-year
mean of the corresponding numbers of notifications for 2010-2014 are also
presented for comparison purposes.
