Job title: Head Coach - Liz van Welie Aquatics Reports to: Directors of Liz van Welie Aquatics Reports: Assistant Coach (to be appointed)

Position Starting: Late February – early March 2017 (neg.)

SWIM WITH PURPOSE

Function of Liz van Welie Aquatics

Liz van Welie Aquatics is a new privately owned aquatic centre opening in Tauranga, New Zealand in late February 2017. It is owned and operated by Liz van Welie and Greg Cummings who have developed the nationally recogised Liz van Welie Swim School.

The core function of Liz van Welie Aquatics (LVWA) will be to deliver swimming development at all levels. Our vision is to have individuals swim with purpose from infancy through to masters, from learn to swim, learn to train, squad swimming, fitness swimming, training for an event or to competing on the world stage.

As such, we are seeking a coach with the skills, knowledge and personal qualities to lead the coaching of swimming from start-up, demonstrating a quality of pedagogy that enables athletes to swim with purpose and achieve quality outcomes.

To achieve this, we will focus on the following key strategic drivers to ensure we are a leading aquatics program in New Zealand:

People

o Retain, develop and attract people who can provide sustained leading support to enhance athlete performance from graduating ‘learn to train’ swimmers through to competing internationally.

o Developing great athletes who become great swimmers

o Enabling the networks of people around swimmers to provide positive sustainable long term support o Leading through what we do, the culture we set and the values we uphold.

Purposeful Environment

o Continuously promote a culture of purpose through our people, resources and facility

o Maximise swimmers potential to achieve outcomes that inspire others locally, regionally and nationally.

Planning & Monitoring

o Use needs analysis, planning, monitoring and assessment practices to enhance performance of individuals and groups within various levels of our swimming programs

o Use a variety of media and technology to record and present improving performances of swimmers at all levels

Pedagogy

o Ongoing learning and development of coaching to understand the best way to deliver coaching and or athlete learning to achieve performance goals of individuals and or groups

Innovation

o Proactively develop and apply innovations aligned to athlete priorities to enhance and enable their abilities in swimming

Intelligence

o Capture, share and leverage knowledge of world leading best practice coaching and or athlete development across swimming and other codes where applicable.

Job Purpose

• To ensure the effective delivery of quality swim coaching to the range of athletes as agreed within LVWA programs.

• To contribute to the development of LVWA strategies, program initiatives, resources and best practise delivery as part of the LVWA coaching team.

• To ensure the effective management of the LVWA facility and resources.

Functions of the role

To ensure the effective delivery of quality swim coaching to athletes as agreed:

o Establish trusting and respectful relationships with athletes, parents, LVWA staff, Directors and LVWA Swim Club

o Support alignment to the goals and objectives of each of the following; LVWA, LVWA Swim Club, Swimming New Zealand, Swimming Bay of Plenty, athletes’ and parents’ needs

o Ensure the development and implementation of short and long term swimming development plans that enable athletes to reach their potential as swimmers

o Support the achievement of the athletes’ goals in and through individual performance plans in swimming

To contribute to the development of athlete strategies, programme initiatives, resources and best practise delivery as part of the coaching team at LVWA

o Achieve performance targets for LVWA and LVWA Swim Club as negotiated

o Facilitate /deliver workshops and or programmes in collaboration with LVWA and other sources of athlete development to best meet athlete needs

o Seek and create opportunities for the growth and benefit of athletes by establishing and managing relationships with partners and stake holders

o Contribute to the collaborative LVWA team environment and goal of being a leading aquatics program o Ensure the required reporting is completed to LVWA and LVWA Swim Club using agreed management

systems

To ensure the effective management of LVWA facilities and resources.

o Ensure the athlete storage and meeting area are managed effectively for athletes’ by athletes o Ensure all coaching and swimming resources are used effectively and with care

Experience/ Skills/Knowledge Essential

• A comprehensive understanding of a swimming performance environment and needs of all athletes

• A proven ability to effectively build capability in others to impact performance in swimming

• Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills to motivate behaviour change to have a positive impact on performance

• Proven success in leading squads of swimmers, leading other coaches and working/contributing successfully to a team in a work environment.

Desirable

• A proven record of provision of support to athletes in swimming

• Experience in successful swimming campaigns

• Relevant qualification and skills to maximise development of athletes in the swimming environment

• Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate personal development plans for individual swimmers at a performance level

• A proven ability to coach, mentor, or supervise individuals to increase quality and impact of performance

• Experience in supporting athletes to transition through programmes within swimming

• Evidence of ongoing professional development and or other learning.

• A related qualification in a discipline relevant to the coaching, management and personal development of athletes in swimming eg. Education, Career Development, Sport Psychology, Sport Coaching or Management

Liz van Welie Aquatics seeks a Head Coach to lead the start-up of squads and programs at all levels following and complimenting the contributing program of the Liz van Welie Swim School.

This is a full time salaried position from late February 2017 (negotiable start date and salary with the successful candidate).
