Young medical men are eager to devote their energies and abilities to the healing of the sick and disabled. But the revolution will come in the lifetime of the present reader, and if it comes upon him unprepared, his adaptation to new conditions will be a painful process. I thought about the Luetin Cuti reaction, but Fanny and the rest absolutely refuse to be "vaccinated" again.
But, gentle men, this sensation is comparable to that of a woman who, suffering from flatus, imagines herself in the last months of pregnancy. Heaven save the patients of the man who goes directly from graduation to private practice. It is to the credit of the youth of this country and this generation that it understands like never before its duty to make its way in the world.
The time capital is more than tripled, and the same must be true of the monetary expenditure. We are therefore, I firmly believe, within measurable distance of the nationalization of the medical profession. And over a large part of the country, especially in the center and West, we have institutions whose influence undoubtedly works towards the end which I have indicated.
Any reform to make the course even remotely ideal should be far-reaching and should not go in the direction of extending the current five-year course.
