The asctaNSW 2012 Awards Dinner was held recently at the Pullman Sydney Olympic Park.

It was a great opportunity for coaches from around the state to come together and recognise the coaches who had placed swimmers onto National or State Teams as well as rewarding coaches for their achievements at State, National and International meets.

The start of the night saw Matthew Brown (Trinty) be awarded with his ascta Commemorative Ring by Ron McKeon, President for Coaching on the Australian Team. Coaches where presented with plaques for coaching on, and placing swimmers onto Australian Open or Age Teams during the year.

Awards were also award to the coaches for gaining their first National Gold Medal and those whose squad had the best performances at a National or State meet.

After a wonderful dinner Ron McKeon took to the stage to share his Olympic journey from the highs and lows of the Olympic Trials, the preparation of two athletes, one of which had to wait until a few weeks out from leaving for London to find out he was on the team, while also being a father of one of the swimmers on the team. Ron spoke about the joys and excitement the family shared watching their son or brother swim on the worlds biggest stage. It was a great insight into being an Olympic Coach and the father of an Olympian.

The night also saw both Chris Myers and Ron McKeon be bestowed the highest honour that of being awarded life membership of asctaNSW for their services to Coaching and Swimming in New South Wales. Both Chris and Ron have worked tirelessly as Board Members of both asctaNSW and Swimming NSW for many years. They have also played a large part in the Competitions Structure and Development Pathway in Swimming NSW.

Funky Short Friday

Friday 11th January again saw asctaNSW put on a great display of Funky Short Friday at 13-18yrs State Age. Coaches were encouraged to wear their brightest, most outlandish pair of shorts for the day.

Money raised will go to asctaCARES and their support of Prostate Cancer, beyond blue & the McGrath Foundation.

Again this year saw coaches dig deep into their pockets and raised $500 for asctaCARES.

Thank you to all the coaches who supported this great day.

Olympian Craig Stevens got into the act with his bright shorts along with James Greathead. National President Ron McKeon was not to be out done in his nice new pair of boardies.

ascta CARES

ASCTA proudly supports:

The Freedom Pool Project

ascta OFFICE

ASCTA shirts were posted to colleagues in Samoa, Fiji, Bangkok and Cameroon. The offer to supply shirts to these countries were all happily accepted and are being distributed to those in need.

Some developing clubs in Swaziland, Argentina and India were sent asctaCARE packs with CD ROM’s and ASCTA journals to help promote swimming to communities needing assistance.

The framed ASCTA shirt with signatures from the 2000 Olympics Australian Swimmers and Coaches donated by Seal Swim School in Wodonga was auctioned on Ebay and raised $1230. Thanks to all members who bid on the shirt and we hope the highest bidder receives lots of enjoyment from it.

If you would like to support asctaCARES, ensure to include a tax deductible donation on your 2013/14 Membership and Insurance application. Swimming NSW Boardshorts day raised $500 for asctaCARES charities. Thank you to all NSW Members who supported the day.

After many months of development by the asctaOFFICE staff, the new ASCTA website has been launched. This has also allowed the asctaOFFICE to integrate social media to our already expansive member services. Please remember to ‘like’ the ‘Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association’ on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (@asctaMULTIMEDIA).

Q AND A

Photograph courtesy of Delly Carr (Sportshoot)

Q. I am attending the asctaCONVENTION 2013. Is there a hotel in the area that you can recommend?

A. ASCTA recommends people stay at the Sofitel Gold Coast. ASCTA organises a fabulous deal for attendees to stay in this wonderful 5 star hotel and the price includes a great buffet breakfast. If you are attending the convention by yourself, why not ask a friend or family member to stay at the hotel with you?

There is a beach, casino, restaurants and hundreds of shops in the local vicinity so they will not be bored and sharing means your accommodation cost is halved.

Staying at the hotel means it is easy to get to the lectures and events, plus it provides a good discount on the daily convention rate.

Q. I’m pregnant and do not need the Premium membership benefits for a few months. Can I join as an ASCTA General member and update it to Premium in a few months when I am back coaching?

A. . Yes, ASCTA members can update their membership level at any time as their circumstances change. Contact the ascta OFFICE and have your credit card ready.

In this instance you are not required to fill in another membership application.

Q. I would like to present ASCTA courses. How do I become an approved Course Presenter?

A. Approved Course Presenters hold a Certificate IV in Training and Assessing, a current Police or Working with Children Check, current CPR, the accreditation they are presenting in and be able to prove at least 5 years relevant industry experience. Course Presenters are also approved Course Administrators so they can organise courses. Many pools conduct courses as a side- line business. It can provide extra income during the slower months and provides an elevated status as a training centre. Contact the asctaOFFICE for a Course Presenter application if you are interested.

(A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is also conducted at the asctaCONVENTION)

If you would like to gain another accreditation, why not attend the asctaCONVENTION 2013 being held on the Gold Coast in May? All teaching and coaching courses are being conducted so register for the Convention today.

ASCTA receives a lot of queries asking who can attend a Silver coaching course. If you hold a Bronze Licence you can enrol in the Silver course. As

well as attending the five day course, Silver course students must complete and return an Assessment Workbook by 1 December and have swimmers

achieve a range of performance benchmarks in order to gain their Silver Licence.

Enclosed with this journal is the 2013/14 ASCTA Membership and Insurance

application plus a Tax Invoice. By 30th June this year, Premium members can also opt to pay their membership in monthly instalments. There is also an extra option so that all members can make a tax deductible donation to ascta CARES.

To pay your 2013/14 ASCTA Membership and Insurance choose one of the following options

• pay online at www.ascta.com by 30 June

• organise 12 monthly membership payments at www.ascta.com (Premium members only)

• return the Tax Invoice

• complete the 2013/14 ASCTA Membership and Insurance application

The 2013/14 Membership/Insurance Tax Invoice or ASCTA Membership and Insurance application can be returned by scan and email, fax or mail. Insurance is valid from the time the application is date stamped in the asctaOFFICE. The asctaOFFICE staff and ASCTA Board work hard to serve all ASCTA members. ASCTA regularly receives

“testimonials” and we are pleased to again list

two on the back of the ASCTA Membership and

Insurance application.

UPDATE

SWIM AUSTRALIA’S NEW MEDIA FORCE

… AND ALL THAT JAZ!

Energetic journalists, leading questions, bright lights, intruding cameras – the world of media, can often be

overwhelming. However, to former swim champion turned media professional, Jasmin Forsyth (nee Geisel), Swim Australia’s media management, is now in safe hands. The national learn- to-swim and water safety authority, assigned Jasmin in June last year, and in addition to paper reports, have already enjoyed extensive national press, in targeted publications including Practical Parenting, Cosmopolitan Pregnancy, Mother & Baby Australia, Child, Kids on the Coast, Out & About with Kids, Studio Bambino, Class Ideas K-3 and The Senior.

Swim Australia’s CEO, Ross Gage couldn’t be happier with their new recruit and commends her extensive knowledge and media contacts for their newfound press success. “Not only does Jaz understand the sport - having medalled at various national and international championships - Jaz is highly skilled in

her media field, and teamed with her own swimming background, is a great asset to our organisation,” Mr Gage said.

Starting out under the wing of former Gap Gators swim coach, Cameron Speechley (pictured), Jasmin later moved on to MLC Leander, training under Joe King and Michael Piper. Progressing through the ranks, she went on to enjoy further success at Commercial Swimming Club, initially through Scott Volkers’ elite stable, before seeing out her career with Michael Bohl. In her rise, Jazzy G - as she was often known on pool deck - proudly pulled on the green and gold in sprint and relay events at Tri-Series, Mare Nostrum and several World Cups, before prematurely retiring in 2000, due to an ongoing back injury. “Swimming is in my blood, and I am truly passionate about every level of its development – from grass roots to competition.

As a mum, not only can I directly relate to the water safety messages, but teamed with my love of the sport, I believe this connection will only assist me in nurturing the growth of Swim Australia’s media,” Mrs Forsyth said.

A QUT journalism graduate, and Golden Key International Honour Society recipient, Jasmin has enjoyed extensive media success as a seasoned television journalist, presenter, writer and producer.

With over 10 years industry experience, she's worked on a range of local and national programs, from kid's shows including Totally Wild and Totally Footy, national documentaries, Channel's 9 and 10 news, sport, lifestyle shows, as well as current affairs programs including Extra and Weekend Extra. While at Nine, she also fronted two Qld Surf Life Saving Championships for Wide World of Sports, and co-hosted a Gold Coast theme park special.

A mother to twenty-month-old daughter, Asha, Jasmin is a regular MC at special events, and co-runs, multi-media house, Media Force Productions, with her usband and TV cameraman, Chris. But Jasmin’s involvement with water, hasn’t always been smooth sailing; the swim safety messages she now promotes, are remarkably close to home.

“I was about three years of age, and busy ‘helping’ my mother clean the pool. Mum turned momentarily to un- kink the hose, and in that time, I had managed to leave her side, slip on the top stair of our inground pool, and simply slide to the bottom,” Mrs Forsyth said.

“Within seconds, mum had pulled me from the pool, and despite the splutters and shaken nerves, I was fine. It was certainly a life lesson - no matter how cautious you are, accidents can and do happen, so always be prepared! “While my confidence around water took a long time to return, and my memory of that day has remained quite vivid, the fact is, I was one of the lucky ones. Sadly though, accidental childhood drowning, claims the greatest number of young lives in Australia, than any other trauma.

“I’m so delighted to have re-joined the swimming family, and be able to help better educate and prepare Australian children and their families, to SwimSAFER in and around water,”

she concluded. For further information, please contact:
