THE NEW DIRECTOR
Mr. E. N. Fitzpatrick
The former Deputy Director, Mr. E. N. Fitzpatrick, is the New Director of Agriculture.
The son of a Bruce Rock farmer, Mr. Fitz- patrick joined the Department of Agriculture's Plant Research Division after completing his degree in agricultural science at the University of Western Australia in 1950.
He carried out research on problems of pas- ture establishment and nutrition in the higher rainfall areas and was closely associated with the early experimental work at Esperance and other areas, which made possible the develop- ment of large areas of light land. In 1956 he was awarded a master of science degree for research on the establishment and nutrition of subterranean clover on problem soils in high rainfall areas.
Later he was involved in planning and set- ting up major experiments on pasture nutri- tion and stocking rates, clover strains and sub- clover induced sheep infertility.
In 1962 he became a special assistant to the Director and Deputy Director, helping with technical aspects of administration of the De-
partment and supervising programmes financed by special grants from Commonwealth and in- dustry sources. He also represented the De- partment on national agricultural committees.
At the beginning of 1969 he was appointed Chief of the Plant Research Division and be- came Deputy Director of Agriculture in Sep- tember, 1969.
As Deputy Director of Agriculture, Mr. Fitz- patrick has been deeply involved in the prob- lems of drought, wheat quotas and rural reconstruction and helped to formulate Gov- ernment and Departmental policy on these. He was Chairman of the Interim Committee on Wheat Quotas.
He is a member of the Commonwealth Wheat Research Council, the West Australian Wheat Industry Research Committee, the State Dairy Advisory Committee and the Council of the W.A. Institute of Technology. In 1967 and 1968 he was President of the W.A. branch of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science.
