The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (Anglo-Saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom. Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

Marjorie Rose Ashley (nee Kent)
Born 16 March 1931 in Canberra – Died 15 November 2015 aged 84 years
Marj was the wife of Alan Ashley, a member of the Rotary Club of Canberra Woden in 1980 (before going to Darwin and joining a Rotary Club there) and from 1982 to 1992. He was president in 1985-86.
Alan grew up in Sydney and had a tough time in the Depression. He joined the Air Force in WW2 and subsequently he studied accountancy and joined the Public Service.
Some of the long standing members of our Club who knew Alan (John Gray, Ken and Denise Goard, and Phil and Louise Ibbotson) attended the celebration of Marjorie’s life and her cremation service in the Chapel at Norwood Park Crematorium, Mitchell, on Thursday 19 November 2015.
There was a full chapel for Marj's service and the family address showed how she had contributed richly to the Canberra's social fabric and was renowned for her cooking skills and growing of flowers.
Club members passed on their condolences to Alan.

Meeting 25 November 2015 Opening
Impromptu Acting Sergeant Stephen opened the meeting with a welcome to all. President Debbie welcomed Pat Schmidt, Keron (Viola’s guest) and our guest speaker, Christine Bowman, from the Advanced Health Care Consumers’ Association.
Christmas Party
Debbie reminded us that the Club Christmas Party is on Wednesday 16 December at the Irish Club to which all are welcome. Please prepay $30 per head so that Val and John can also enjoy the party and not have to do money at the start.
Sergeant’s Session
Sergeant Stephen ran an amusing and informative session relieving all of us of our small change.
George won the Heads and Tails and received a delightful green Rotary kangaroo brooch.
Christmas Cakes
The South Woden Uniting Church has been cooking and selling these cakes, made to a special secret recipe, for the last twenty years. Last year they raised $18,000 and gave the lot to a variety of charities overseas and within Australia, including My Home. This year three families, assisted by the whole congregation, are baking 600 large and small cakes.
George will be delighted to take orders for Christmas cakes (see photo) – large 1250 g at $28, small 450 g at $12. Give your orders directly to George (at the next meeting or phone 6286 8375).

an English speaker. Maeka wrote to John Widdup asking if she could get her English writing class students to send a Christmas card to Club members. John gave her the names and address of Club members – who should get a card soon. Please reply to the student who sends you a card.
Guest speaker
Christine Bowman introduced us to (in her words) ‘the unwelcome but inevitable conversation about our future lives and particularly what we wish to occur in terms of health care should we be seriously injured or ill and towards the end of our lives’. She gave us advice on advanced health care planning including: a planning guide, a conversation starter kit and the ACT Health
‘advanced care plan statement of choices’. Christine issued us all with a fat folder of documents for us to consider what we would like to have done to us and how to document our desires and let others know.
For more information see the ACT Health Care Consumers' website atwww.hcca.org.au/.
Christine had three important take home points:
• Settle how you want to be treated, then stop talking and thinking about it, just record it and make sure other know, then get on with the rest of your life.
• If there is any dispute within the family as to what happens with your health care, this can only be resolved while the heads of the family are alive and able.
• Always carry your ‘little green card’ in your wallet.
This card contains the vital information about your future health care related desires. The card was not available at the meeting and Christine promised us she will provide the cards as soon as possible (via Viola).
Norma thanked Christine for her useful talk and gave her a Club glass coaster as a thank you and a reminder of us all (see photo).
Closure:
President Debbie closed the meting and asked members ‘to be a gift to the world’.
