February is
Rotary peace and conflict prevention/resolution month ShelterBox Australia is a proud Project Partner of Rotary InternationalWhen a family loses its home, it’s devastating. But when a family loses its home in the depths of winter, with temperatures as low as -25°C, it’s a matter of life and death.
Cold weather kills 20 times as many people as hot weather
Temperatures of -18 °C with a wind speed of 15mph will cause frostbite in just 30 minutes
Children lose heat faster and are more vulnerable to hypothermia and frost- bite
Winter temperatures in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) fall below -25 °C
When you cry in temperatures of -25 °C, your eyelashes freeze together In the DPRK, families are facing the bite of
winter with nowhere safe or warm to sleep.
Year after year, floods and severe storms have smashed through the countryside, tearing homes in two and destroying crops. This means no building materials and little hope of rebuilding again. (cont. on page 4)

Alf Evans, ShelterBox Operations Manager, visited the DPRK after the country was struck by Typhoon Bolaven. His video diary shows the desperate conditions people are living in, and the difference ShelterBox can make to a freezing family this winter. Watch the video at: https://youtu.be/CMwgOU2ujMg
“We urgently need your help to reach the remote communities suffering in the DPRK.
Cutting through red tape is not easy due to the complex political situation, but we won’t let these families be forgotten.

The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (Anglo-Saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom.
Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

Wednesday 2 March meeting and dinner – at Mike and Helen Rodd’s home at 50 Schlich Street in Yarralumla. Mike is organising a quiz session which will be based on teams who will attempt to identify the location of where the photos have been taken. These will be photos from members of recent (or maybe not so recent) visits to interesting places. Mike will need 2 or 3 photos of such places from members emailed to him before the night so that he can arrange into a presentation which he can put onto a screen. Don’t be limited to 3 but he may have to do some culling! The scoring will be based on identifying Country, Region, Town/City etc.
Mike will be the sole adjudicator and only significant bribes will be entertained!
This format has been used at other Rotary social functions and is good fun.

Sunday 24 April – Five Peaks (plus one) Challenge bike ride – changed date please put it in your diary as all required to assist for our major fund raising event
Saturday 30 April – Concert to raise funds for MyHome in Canberra (Shukry is manager)
7 to 14 May – Rotary Adventure in Citizenship (RAIC) and all members are required to assist as and when possible during that week. Can you billet two year 11 students for one of the most rewarding weeks of their lives?
28 to 30 October 2016 – District 9710 Conference – to be held in Goulburn
The meeting was opened by Sergeant Stephen with toasts to Kosovo and Rotary International. As there was no guest speaker it was decided to have an evening of fellowship & planning.
John Widdup described the nature, requirements, and expected returns from a possible fund raising “Race Night”
This involves a Race Night where people “bet” on several horse, dog and pig races using “play” money that participants received when they arrive. The actual
“races” are on a DVD that will be purchased from a Melbourne Company who specialises in providing all the materials needed to run a “Race Night” as a fund raising activity.
There was strong support for the activity. The following aspects were raised and agreed to by Club members.
Run the Race Night in June/July, during Canberra’s winter (3 hrs duration)
Plan for 300 patrons. Lyn was to ask the Irish Club if they could provide their bigger room free of charge and if they could not, to ask other clubs. We require a large TV screen (to play DVD) and a public address system.
Customers/patrons could purchase drinks & snacks from the Club (we would not supply).
Entrance fee of $30 & punters are given their “play money”
Things you should know and do- dates for your diary
Seek sponsors for the night and for about six individual races. $200 for a race and $500 for the night plus a few free tickets -- say 3 for a race and 4 for the event? Sponsors get naming rights and corresponding publicity. Define a fund raising focus for the evening & market around this focus.
Run a raffle.
Display the Shelter box and have a donation amount displaying thermometer (Stephen to supply)
Fashions in the field was mentioned but details not defined.
We can do the on-line ticketing via the District website (free of charge).
The Race Nights Australia people can supply a poster that we can modify.Possible transferred meeting?
Woden Daybreak Rotary warmly invites you to our movie fundraiser in support of MS Australia and the Longreach Rotary Club (Drought Appeal). Please come along and spread the word among your families, friends and workmates.

by MS and for farmers and their families suffering from very severe drought conditions.
