Squash Vic welcomes new Development Coordinator
Squash Vic welcomes Tegan Doherty who was recently appointed as our new Development Coordinator.
Tegan comes to Squash Vic with a broad range of experience in program coordination, customer service, administration and junior squash coaching.
“I’m really excited to be joining the team at Squash Vic and look forward to getting to know the wider squash community.”
Tegan will be heavily involved with the Vichealth funded women & girls project as well as coordinating the roll out of the national junior modified squash program due for release in 2012.
Leigh Sands has left Squash Vic to concentrate on completing his University degree and we thank Leigh for his time with the organisation and wish him well for the future. As a metro pennant player, Leigh will still be involved in the sport.
Profile: Cassie Thomas
Cassie Thomas (nee Jackman), one of England's most successful woman squash players of all time, is now resident in Melbourne! Forced to retire from the game after sustaining a back injury for the third time in her career in 2004, Cassie is now cautiously testing the waters on the local squash scene following the births of her and husband Matt’s two daughters – Erin and Lola. Cassie played in the third round of Super Series Squash last month at Gladstone Park and will be among the competitors again for round 4 at Westerfolds Sports Centre on Friday September 23.
Cassie is also keen to help out with Victoria’s emerging junior talent and recently took on the role of State Junior Coach (following the withdrawal of Sarah Fitz‐Gerald) for the forthcoming Australian Junior Championships. Said Squash Vic High Performance Manager, Richard Cagliarini, “we are delighted to have a person of Cassie’s experience on board and the team is looking forward to working with her.”
Thomas, who has been playing squash since she was nine, enjoyed a distinguished career in the sport ‐ winning 28 WISPA World Tour titles including the World Open crown in 1999 and was British National Champion in 1993, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004. She became world No1 for the first time in January 2000, topping the list until undergoing the first of two back operations in November 2000. Back under the surgeon's scalpel in September 2002, she remarkably, reclaimed her world No1 crown a year after returning to the world circuit. However, injury returned to haunt her in the second round of the 2004 World Open.
"I had a scan as soon as I got back home and it revealed what I feared ‐ that I had a slipped disc and sustained a slight tear in another disc," said Thomas. "I didn't think my body was ready for yet another bout of surgery so I felt that there was no real alternative but to stop playing. I was very disappointed as I always envisaged that I would retire when I wanted to, rather than when I was forced to.”

Squash Vic is introducing the opportunity for country Victoria (as well as interested metropolitan venues/clubs) to host their own junior events and provide more opportunities for juniors to participate and be linked to squash in Victoria.
There are many junior players in country Victoria who do not currently compete in junior events due to the fact that the majority of tournaments are staged in Melbourne.
The new Victorian Junior Circuit for 2012 will consist of three classes of event ‐ Gold, Silver and Bronze.
•
Gold event – State Titles•
Silver events – Xmas Cup, SSL Junior Age, NWSL Junior Age, VSL Junior Age and Metro Junior Age• Bronze events – any other events (meeting a minimum criteria)
Any Squash Vic affiliated club or venue may apply to Squash Vic to host one or as many Bronze events as they wish provided they follow the VJC guidelines.
The minimum criteria for a Bronze event would be:
•
Best of 5 games (timed events will not be considered)•
Point‐a‐rally scoring to 11, win by 2•
Minimum of 6 participants (may be across several grades)• Swiss draw, round robin or knockout format
It should be noted that only Xmas Cup and State Titles are age and gender based while the remaining Silver events and Bronze events would be mixed age and gender.
Benefits of a State Junior Circuit:
• ‘Mirrors’ the process and requirements of a senior tournament circuit
• Provides more opportunities for players, coaches and managers
• Provides more incentive for bronze class events
• Provides Squash Vic with a ‘product’ to market to potential sponsors
Junior Players will earn points towards a State ranking based on the class of tournament in which they play and the finishing position they achieve in the tournament. The yearly tournament calendar is designed to give players of all skill levels the opportunity for fun and competitive tournament play. The strongest players will participate primarily in the Gold and Silver level tournaments, while less experienced players will focus on Bronze events.
Point Allocation for Events
In order to determine a player’s ranking a divisor of 4 would be employed. The player’s points accumulated from one or more tournaments is divided by 4. The points range between Gold and Silver and Silver and Bronze is such that a player who competes only in Bronze events and wins all of them cannot be ranked higher than a better player who competes in (at least 4) Silver and Bronze events.
If a player competes in 5 or 6 events the results from their best four events is included and the poorer results beyond four events are dropped off. Players can play in as many events as they wish with no restriction but the divisor remains the same. Should players who fall within a grouping and have equal points on the ranking list need to be
‘separated’, final positions would be determined by any head to head results from within that group.
Note that points are awarded on an equal basis for players finishing 3 – 4, 5 – 8, 9 – 16, 17 – 32 and 33 – 64. This is to counter the fact that when seeding events these slots are allocated randomly.
Squash Vic will provide training in tournament management for Clubs/Centres wishing to host their own events.
Interested Clubs/Centres should contact the Squash Vic office on 9682 2199.
