The academic administration of the university is carried out by various faculties and the College of Management, and is supervised by the Academic Board. Sir Edward Woodward, one of Australia's most distinguished judges, will become the new chancellor of the university from 1 January 1990.
ACADEMIC BOARD
The committee dealt with policy and technical aspects of the proposed new curricula and school trials of assessment methods. Through the Joint Committee of the Academic Board and Heads of Colleges, the Board met with the Heads of the University and its affiliated colleges to discuss matters of common interest.
AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY
Two noteworthy developments are currently being considered and will have significant implications for the future of the Faculty. The second is a recent decision by the Victorian College of Agriculture and Horticulture to amalgamate with the University of Melbourne to meet the requirements for membership of the Unified National System.
ARTS
The general climate has been largely hostile to support for research in the humanities and social sciences this year. The most successful departments in the 1989 round were Psychology (four initials, five renewals), History (two initials, four renewals), English (five initials), Fine Arts (four initials), Classical and Near Eastern Studies (three initials and one renewal) and geography (one initial, one renewal).
DENTAL SCIENCE
An exhibition of Japanese Noh masks was held in the Westpac gallery, along with a visit from a Noh dancer and the mask maker. The School of Clinical Dentistry is expected to assume a more prominent role in the teaching program in the Hospital and Faculty.
ECONOMICS AND COMMERCE
Sixty full-fee overseas students entered the first year of the Bachelor of Commerce in 1989 and there are a small number of overseas full-fee paying students in the postgraduate and postgraduate courses. They are the beginning of the Faculty's participation in the newly established Asian Business Center at the University.
EDUCATION
The Institute was established following the amalgamation of the Melbourne College of Advanced Education and the University, by legislation of the Victorian Government in late 1988. The academic organization and governance structure of the Institute was agreed during merger discussions last year.
ENGINEERING
34;History and Philosophy of Law" will expose students to many of the fundamental issues in the history, philosophy and sociology of law. As a result, ARC funds in 1990 will make a significant contribution to research in the Law School.
MEDICINE
Professor Geoffrey Tregear of the Howard Florey Institute accepted an appointment to the Department of Biochemistry as a Professorial Associate with the title of Professor. Professor Ian McKenzie becomes Professor/Director of the Austin Hospital Medical Research Institute at the end of 1990.
MUSIC
Professor John Coghlan will accept his appointment as Professor of Experimental Physiology and Medicine when he takes office on January 1, 1990 as Director of the Howard Florey Institute. Professor Ross Webster retires as Professor of Community Medicine and Professor Derek Denton retires as Professor of Experimental Physiology and Medicine and Director of the Howard Florey Institute.
SCIENCE
In all the main sectors of the Faculty, we are, together with the University of Sydney, the main producers of higher degree students in Australia. In all areas of the Faculty, we intend to continue to support CSIRO, building stronger links in the 1990s to protect our association with CSIRO science.
VETERINARY SCIENCE
The Faculty of Science has always maintained close links with Australia's largest scientific resource, the CSIRO. At the end of a decade of changes and a year of major changes, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is preparing for the 1990s.
GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
In addition, four new associate professors and associate professors and four research assistants have joined the school's staff. The school's research program is supported by the increasing number of staff and the resulting opportunities for individual and joint research.
RESEARCH
The performance of the University of Melbourne in the competition for external grant funds was therefore very gratifying, but the increase in total ARC funds awarded did not fully offset the funds lost in the clawback. Its main remit is to help market the University's considerable resources in intellectual property, research banks and facilities.

Support from government agencies for students is not extensive, and for many students it is not available, due to the income levels of their parents. As a result of the merger, the number of indigenous students enrolled at the University under the University's special admission arrangements has reached 56. The University continued to provide support to Aboriginal students by providing an Aboriginal Liaison Officer and support staff, as well as the leisure and study support facilities of the Aboriginal Liaison Office in Faraday Street.
The university's three childcare centers operated at full capacity during 1989.
LIBRARY
In the latter context further work has been done to develop disaster recovery planning and to complete a comprehensive assessment of the collections. Administration of the Library Book Vote was facilitated in 1989 by the relative stability in the exchange value of the Australian dollar during the year. The development of interest in Asian Studies in various areas within the university has highlighted the need for adequate library support for such initiatives and the Library has been actively involved in various discussions related to these developments.
A significant element in the Library's collection building program over the past decade has been the development of substantial collections of research materials in microform formats.
