During a survey of the river and the banks, it was found that many remains of the 18301s still remain. Because of the nature of the subject I found, I was forced to limit myself to a specific area of the river. A network of highways on the edge of the river will keep people away from the Banks.

Across the river the Brisbane Abattoir, Borthwick's Meatwoks and the s.E.A. Considering that Kingsrcrd Smith Drive, adjacent to the riverbank, is the gateway to the city. Shafston Reach is a very interesting part of the river with high density apartment complexes on the north side.

The Toowong Reach is one of the longest stretches on the Brisbane River and it is this Reach that people value more than any other part of the river. The residential development along this section of the river is of a very high standard and the river frontage has been utilized to its full extent.

DESCRIPTION OF THE

RIVER

When they reached the mouth of the river on their return journey it was dark, and as mangroves and mud banks occur, no landfall was attempted on shore. In 1825 Major Lockyer claimed to have traveled up the river, or a distance of 100 miles, making a total distance of 150 miles. In 1830 Lockyer made the last trip up the river to explore the Upper Brisbane areas.

A point across the river formed the first means of communication between the southern and northern banks. There were several changes to this survey, but one of them was the provision of a public wharf on the north side of the creek. Although the first sea-going vessel "MERMAID" was the first to cross the Brisbane River bar, the larger vessels did not attempt to enter the river, as the depth or water at low tide in some places in the river was only our f'eet.

Further down the river which is now known as Kangaroo Point, the settlement across the river progressed very slowly. As previously mentioned, the first ferry to cross the river ran between Russell Street on the south side to the Old Queen's Wharf on the north side. The steamer "LADY MUSGRAVE" found herself hard and fast on the River side at New Farm Park.

Another flood on the Brisbane River in 1896 caused the steamship "PEARL", which was crossing the river with seventy passengers to be transported to the government steamer "LUCINDA", to eventually capsize. However, Pinkenba proved to be too far downstream of the river and the lower reaches of Eagle Farm ÂŁlats, Packer Island and Hamilton Reach were dredged by powerful cutter suction dredgers and bucket suction dredgers. This reclamation began the natural movement down the river with the government's construction of a wharf and reinforced concrete cold stores in 1922, and the construction of quays.

Since 1925 Brisbane has steadily increased in importance as a port, and all the principal wharves are now closer to the mouth of the river.

HISTORICAL OUTLINE

The Borthwicks, Abottoirs and Gravel Depots, together with the Fish Board make great use of the water, and their position on the banks of the river is well justified. Within the central city in Brisbane there are approximately thirty stormwater lines that enter the river. There is no limit to the number of lines entering the river, except in the case of industrial waste.

At the Tennyson and New Farm Power Houses, water from the river is allowed through and used as a cooling medium for the turbines. Any water collected from the river that becomes contaminated due to the nature of such use must be purified before entering the river. If this were the case, there would be a lot of problems to solve. The control would flow into the river not only in Brisbane, but also in other cities connected to it.

The main sewer system ÂŁ or Brisbane ÂŁ discharges at the mouth 0 ÂŁ the river known as Luggage Point. At the wharf the "Cement co" is moored, the hopper doors opened and the coral tumbled into the river where it is recovered by cake cranes. It has been designed with great thought. relation to the river and will incorporate the following:-.

The new site has a clear advantage over the previous site as it is closer to the mouth of the river and offers much more convenient docking facilities. Most of the tourist facilities connected to the river and bay trips are managed by Hayles Cruises Pty Ltd. This sport takes place in the river from the University Domain down to the Br·emer River.

The Toowong Reach, due to its length and situation is an ideal stretch of river for all paddling events. There are eight cross-river ferries operating on the river plus two ferries operating between Mowbray Park and 1 Customs House. The cost of running hydrofoils on the river compared to the weekly return on passenger fares would not balance.

FUNCTIONS

Much of the stonework ÂŁmm, Petrie Bight and Kangaroo Point quarries, was used to raise and improve the river walls. With the advent of the new oil refineries, a large reclamation work has been initiated around the mouth of the river and at Just as rules and regulations are introduced on the road, the same applies on the river.

Wharf line is the dividing line usually located a certain distance from the riverbank towards the center of the river and is the dividing line between the B. Private Enterprise plays an important role in the management of the banks of the Brisbane River and not so much in the management of the banks of the Brisbane River. the management of the river. Many industries that have acquired land on the banks of the river in recent years are making an effort to beautify the banks and adjacent land.

Besides the river, the water police administer a l l identification of dams from the border to Tew ant in. But all industrial waste and sewage entering the river is controlled and managed by the Ministry of Health. Existing development along the river banks at present leaves much to be desired.

This is mainly because 0ÂŁ the distance the ships have to travel up the river to the north and. As the land required ÂŁ or the implementation of a container vessel, the Port of 0ÂŁ Brisbane is quite capable 0ÂŁ providing such facilities around the Serpentine area at the 0ÂŁ river mouth at this stage. The new Victoria Bridge and the proposed highway along the north bank of the river on the South Brisbane Reach are.

Riverbanks are obvious sites or a new road system, but the aesthetic appearance can prove to be very disappointing.

ASSESSMENT

OF CURRENT SITUATION

RECOMMENDED P R O P O 5 A L S When considering proposals for the stream, it is very difficult to limit yourself to a specific land area. For the purpose of this thesis, however, proposals for the entire stream will be discussed, and then more detailed proposals for redevelopment of the specified area will be presented. As mentioned before, there is a very drastic need for some kind of maintenance program on the river and its banks.

A corporation would have to be set up to exercise some overall control over the river and its development. can require all developers on the riverbank to maintain the riverbank by building a wall to a standard specification. All river mooring facilities for small private boats must be in inspected areas only and any jetties that are re-constructed must meet standard specifications. As mentioned earlier, with the increase in the number of registered private boats, the existing mooring facilities on the river are totally inadequate and many boats moored in the creeks and river are beginning to be affected.

Because of this certain areas of the river would be very suitable ÂŁor the construction of a 1:D in hartour. With industrial development being more prevalent at the mouth of the river and with the availability of eleven thousand acres of land in the Serpentine area, many. reclamation and excavation can be encouraged to ensure. attractive places ÂŁ or the promotion of the right kind of industries. At the present time the south side of the southern Brisbane Reach presents a very dilapidated appearance from the north side of the river.

This will have an impact on many functions associated with the river, namely Hayles cruises and the rowing sheds of Commercial Grammar and Brisbane clubs. Ltd. would benefit much more in the form of advertising using their boats as a medium if they moved to the other side of the river where there is plenty of deep water and easier access for people. Proposals have been made for a Riverside Drive along the southern bank of Milton Reach and these clubhouses could be incorporated into a strip of parkland between the drive and the riverbanks.

With a small amount of money, many parts of the river can be cleaned up and constructed appropriately.

RECOMMENDED

PROPOSALS

It is to be hoped that something can be instigated to plan future development along the Brisbane River. The object of this thesis is not to produce grand schemes of development, but to be sympathetic to existentialism. Nothing will be achieved if development is allowed to progress in a haphazard fashion, and especially when the Brisbane River has so much in its favour.

To date, twenty-three service reservoirs are in use, with a total capacity of 47 million gallons.
