In reply to your comments on the CAS Exhibition in the recent issue of Smudges, Voi. 3, No. 30, in which you state, "Unbeautiful, unsettled the works may be, but'equally unsettled and unbeautiful is the world in which they are oainted!" Art, as well as architecture, should express the social con

ditions of the community in which we live; but there is no necessity far art to reflect the’un

beautiful ghastliness of the. insignificant minority.

Admittedly, in a small number of exhibits we find quality. However, this quality is chiefly due to composition of form and colour, coupled with draughtsmanship. Even then the subjects, and even the thoughts expressed in the subjects are poor, and often vulgar. The : majority .of the exhibits were the result of sordid and' de

ranged minds.

The episode of the "jam"b session wgnifies the expression of a very large section of the com

munity. The martyr who let his conscience guide his physical actions deserves the acclamation of all honest citizens.
