Introduction and Overview

Many signals indicate that the curriculum innovations offer students the educational quality that they and the university strive for. In 2009, the welcome announcement was made that the university will collaborate on the new $1 billion Parkville Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC).

The University remains on track

The Shanghai Jiao Tong Index and THE Ranking recognize the University's high performance in various disciplines. A consultation process in 2009 to improve the growing respect strategy showed strong support from university direction staff.

Five-year statistics

The years 2005-2006 have not been adjusted and therefore represent the University's previous treatment of gains and losses. Roger Deutscher, manager of the university's Student Financial Aid Office, said the continued donor support had been immensely helpful.

Spirit of giving alive in tough times

With rents skyrocketing and informal work opportunities dramatically reduced, the university's financial aid office received more grant applications than ever before. The university's Office of Financial Aid has so far provided direct financial aid to 256 undergraduate and postgraduate students experiencing financial hardship.

Research performance

Preliminary results from sector-wide discipline trials conducted during the year bode well for the university. The program aims to recruit recent PhDs in areas of research priority for the University and its faculties.

Research training performance

In consultation with key groups such as the Research Training Advisory Committee (RTAC) and the Research Higher Degrees Committee (RHDC), MSGR led a number of initiatives in 2009 to improve research training performance. RHD students are considered the research engine of the university, and the research output of RHD students is a key performance indicator for research training.

Professor Ian Anderson

MSGR Exit Survey data collected from 2006 to 2008 (the most recent data available) showed that 80 percent were satisfied with the oversight. Research training cooperation agreements with international universities are an important basis for increasing activities in the field of training of graduates and researchers.

Cross-disciplinary, inter-institutional and

The award of approximately $19 million from the Victorian Neurotrauma Initiative to four successful bids involving the University of Melbourne (two with the university as the lead institution). The establishment of the state-funded Victorian Climate Change Adaptation Research Center (VICCAR) with the university as the administering institution and a number of other Victorian universities as partners.

Dr Rosanna Scutella

The data will be produced using the University's process improvement resulting from trial submissions in 2009. The University will work with the Royal Melbourne Hospital and other leading cancer researchers at the Parkville Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

Performance Against 2009 Targets

The university was one of three Australian universities in the top 100 in the most respected international university research ranking, the Shanghai Jiao Tong (SJT) Academic Ranking of World Universities, ranked 75 (compared to an equal 73 for 2008) and six in Asia-Pacific region (compared to six in 2008). In the Times Higher Education-Quacquarelli Symonds (THE-QS) World University Rankings Melbourne was ranked equal 36th, up from 38th in 2008.

The Melbourne Model

Improving the Quality of Courses

In an encouraging result, 71 per cent of first year undergraduates reported a 'good to excellent'. Breedt' is an important feature of the University's new generation of undergraduate degrees, with students required to take 25 percent of their degree in a field or fields of study outside their major.

Implementing the Melbourne Model

The University of Melbourne received the largest number of awards in the 2009 round, tied with Griffith University. The University Provost is responsible for refining the Melbourne model and overseeing the delivery of the university's student services.

The Melbourne Experience

Five thousand students, employees and members of the university community joined the fitness center, registering more than 222,000 individual visits. The student experience was also the focus of the Vice-Chancellor's Annual Colloquium on Teaching and Learning in 2009.

Professor John Dewar

While the emphasis in 2008 was on implementing systems to strengthen enrichment programs, in 2009 the University focused on specific programs and activities to enhance the Melbourne Experience. In other measures in 2009, the University adopted an inaugural Mental Health Strategy and updated the Disability Action Plan.

Access and Equity

The scheme connects Indigenous University of Melbourne students with new Koorie students at target schools. The Postgraduate Indigenous Summer School is a key initiative to encourage Indigenous students to consider research study.

Outlook

The target of less than 10 percent reporting a bad experience was met, with 5 per cent reporting a bad experience. The university failed to meet its target of a 5 per cent increase in the number of Indigenous students enrolling at the university.

Performance against 2009 targets

An encouraging result is that 71 per cent of first-year undergraduates reported a "good to excellent" overall experience at Melbourne, up from 69 per cent at the inaugural MES in 2007, although less than the university's target of 75 per cent. In 2009, excellent progress was made in increasing the proportion of Victorian schools participating in the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program, with 87 per cent of the 559 eligible schools now participating in the program.

New Ian Potter curator to aid learning through art

The Ian Potter Foundation continued its support of the University of Melbourne in 2009 by offering $180,000 from 2010 to 2012 to establish the position of Curator of Academic Programs at the Ian Potter Museum of Art. The establishment of the curatorship follows the remarkable and ongoing generosity of the Ian Potter Foundation to the University of Melbourne.

Knowledge Transfer

Knowledge transfer has long been an integral part of the university's external activities, but it is not always recognized within the university and beyond. In 2009, the university continued to enrich Melbourne's cultural life with theatre, music, visual and literary programmes.

International Collaboration

In order to explain the concept of knowledge transfer to students, a brief outline of knowledge transfer and its value in the curriculum was included for the first time in the Guide to National Undergraduate Courses, together with descriptions of the knowledge transfer component of all new generation degrees. Participation in the OECD benchmarking project, Review of Higher Education Institutions in Regional Development, led by the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development in Victoria; and.

Associate Professor Roger Hadgraft

The university remains an active participant in the activities of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU). Director of the university's Australian Center for Science, Innovation and Society (ACSIS) is leading the AWI climate change project.

Professor Collette Tayler

The university's strong performance in international rankings is discussed in the Research and Research Training section of this report on page 23. The ranking places the university at the forefront of international education and reflects the university's particularly high position in the Asia-Pacific region.

Alumni

Despite the global financial downturn the University achieved

The university hosted the Association of Pacific Rim Universities Senior Staff Meeting, with 32 member institutions represented. Ties with India were strengthened through the official launch of the university's Australia India Institute and a university-wide mission to India led by the Vice-Chancellor.

Performance against 2009 Targets

The University participated in an OECD benchmark project for the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development. Dr Blackburn received his Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science degrees from the University of Melbourne in 1970 and 1972.

Infrastructure

The renovated Brownless Library of Medicine is expected to be completed in 2010 and planning for a major renovation of the University's main library, the Baillieu Library, is already well advanced. An extensive feasibility study has begun for the redevelopment of the Baillieu Library building to determine the best approach for upgrading the University's main library building.

Professor Jeremy Mould

The $15 million Eastern Precinct project has been completed. The Eastern Precinct is part of the University's broader vision to achieve the establishment of discipline-clustered library and learning areas, enhanced research data management, and study spaces by 2015 and 2020. A series of organizational reforms were implemented in 2009 in preparation for the transition to Responsible Division Management (RDM) in January 2010 and in response to the impact of the global financial crisis on the university's revenues.

Bequest set to strengthen veterinary science program

A $4.7 million donation will enable the University of Melbourne to establish and fund a new chair in the Faculty of Veterinary Science. Basis of preparation

The quoted market price used for financial assets held by the Group is the closing price on the balance sheet date. In designating financial assets at fair value through profit or loss, the Group has determined that it has met one of the criteria for this designation, as set out in Note 1.9. b) The Group classifies financial assets as held to maturity if it has determined that it has both the positive intention and the ability to hold the assets to maturity, as required in Note 1.9.

Principles of consolidation (i) Subsidiaries

The University has more than 50% of the voting rights in each of these companies, with the exception of Melbourne Business School Limited (45%) and the Victorian Institute of Chemical Sciences Limited (33%). Unrealized gains from transactions between the Group and its associates are eliminated to the extent of the Group's interest in the associates.

Foreign currency translation (i) Functional and presentational currency

The listed companies, with the exception of the overseas subsidiaries in UMEE Limited, are all based in the State of Victoria. Associates are all entities over which the Group has significant influence, but not control, and which generally involve an equity ownership of between 20% and 50% of the voting rights.
