Vermin control this month
RABBITS Poisoning
I n t h i s exceptionally wet winter rabbit poisoning is now reduced to cleaning up isolated patches on h i g h ground. I n some of t h e flatter districts, s u c h as Serpentine or Capel, w h e r e rabbits h a v e all moved to high ground (mostly on s a n d ridges), good poisoning kills c a n be obtained. Work done on these areas, a t this time, will prevent a lot of trouble in t h e a p p r o a c h i n g summer.
Fumigation
Fumigation a t t h i s time will also be very limited b u t wherever active w a r r e n s are found, "Larvacide" or "Phostoxin"
fumigation will p r e v e n t a big build u p in population in t h e spring.
F u r t h e r advice on rabbit control can be obtained from your local Vermin Control Officer or Shire Council.
FOXES
A lot of cubs will be born by now but vixens, heavy in milk, will be confined close to t h e i r dens. Heavy baiting a r o u n d known dens a n d suspected cover will result in t h e d e a t h of not only t h e vixen b u t also t h e cubs.
WILD DOGS
Ground baiting drives against wild dogs, which would normally be completed by the end of May, will n o t be finished this year until well into August owing to seasonal conditions. Pastoralists in t h e Kimberley region will continue with their
baiting programmes and can s t a r t to give t h o u g h t to the organisation of t h e coming donkey control programme. Wild dog con- trol in t h e southern p a r t of t h e State h a s been severely h a m p e r e d by wet boggy con- ditions. However, t h e m a i n drives were successfully carried out before t h e winter set in.
EMUS
Some winter poisoning of emus can still be carried out in places where t h e n a t u r a l (or introduced) p a s t u r e grasses a n d native flora have not yet come into flower. With t h e exceptionally wet year, p a s t u r e flower- ing m a y be delayed somewhat, and t h e period to poison emus extended. However, by next m o n t h t h e period for maximum kills will have passed, and all farmers with emu problems are advised to get on and poison t h e m without delay. A brief article on t h e subject appeared in t h e July issue of this Journal.
GRASSHOPPERS
Some hoppers h a t c h e d in early July this year and by August will be in t h e hopping stage. They can be quite troublesome a t this time a n d spraying operations should now be in full swing. Once again the wet seasonal conditions will play a p a r t a n d some areas may still be too wet to spray.
An article dealing with spraying of grass- hoppers w i t h Dieldrin appeared in t h e July issue of t h e J o u r n a l of Agriculture a n d farmers in affected areas should all m a k e a point of reading this before com- mencing to spray.
