OH&S- WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR VOLUNTEERS?

(Taken from the new Volunteer Position Description)

Volunteers have a responsibility for:

Looking after their own health and safety and those of others in the workplace;

Follow safe work practices and use personal protective equipment as required;

Participate in OH&S consultation and OH&S training initiatives;

Report any accidents, incidents, injuries “near misses”, safety hazards and dangerous occurrences, assist with any investigations and the identification of corrective actions;

Cooperate with managers and supervisors so that they can meet their OH&S responsibilities;

Don’t willfully interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interest of health and safety or willfully put anyone at risk;

Performing only those tasks for which they have received appropriate training and instruction;

Ensuring that they understand and comply with those responsibilities which apply to them while performing their duties at the workplace;

Participate in emergency evacuation exercises.

FAREWELL TO ETHEL LOWE

On March 19th, staff, volunteers and clients came together in happiness and sadness as Ethel Lowe Day Centre ceased operations just before Easter. Pictured above is part of the very dedicated group of volunteers, some of whom have been volunteering at Ethel Lowe, since its inception in 1987.

Fortunately, all staff, clients and volunteers will be able to remain part of this valuable BHS program, and will join with Eyres House, Elizabeth Brown or Midlands Day Centres.

However, there were a couple of tears, as an era came to an end. One volunteer summed it up well; ‘we are like a family…I will miss coming here every week.’

Thank you to all Ethel Lowe’s volunteers: Betty, Anna, Sharon, Joy, Lorraine B, Vi, Kathy, Nellie, Marian, Pat, Allan, and Patrick and best of luck as you move to a new family. And a very big special thank you and farewell to Lorraine R (that’s her on the very right), who has made the decision to retire from her volunteering with BHS and pursue other interests.

THANKS LORRAINE we wish you well.

BRICC VOLUNTEERS TRAINING

Pictured above is the new group of volunteers who will be working in the Cancer Centre, beginning limited services in April. We are very excited to welcome the volunteers from BAROC (Ballarat Austin Radiation Oncology Centre) who, with a handful of current BHS volunteers are now trained and ready to begin as services start operation over the next few months. Once the centre opens and is fully operational, we will begin further recruitment of new volunteers and hope to have numbers of over 50 eventually. There is already a waiting list of very keen and eager people wanting to volunteer their time in the BRICC.

Don’t forget your free flu shot this winter. To make an

appointment, phone the clinic on 5320 4211.

And a word from Sue…
