2 and businesses undertaking construction and

demolition activities in the Western Sydney region to encourage recycling of Construction and Demolition (C&D) materials.

This directory can be used to identify C&D waste recycling facilities and services, per material type, as required in council waste management plans.

such as paint or asbestos.

Recycling or safe disposal of these materials is important as it can help reduce pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and energy used over a product’s lifecycle. More importantly, recycling of these materials helps ensure we continue to have access to affordable, high-quality building materials.

In terms of cost, reducing your usage and waste can achieve savings through spending less on materials and avoiding disposal costs.

What can you do about C&D waste?

The following measures can help to avoid and reduce C&D wastes, and lower costs:

Accurate civil estimation and contingency provision so that the required quantities of materials are ordered with minimum wastage or surplus;

Utilisation of prefabricated materials where possible;

Reuse of formwork;

Use of modular construction and basic designs to reduce the need for off-cuts;

Separation of materials to facilitate reuse, resale or efficient recycling;

Minimisation of site disturbance to limit unnecessary excavation;

Reuse or recycling of materials from demolished buildings where possible;

Selection of landscaping which reduces green waste; and

Coordination and sequencing of site work and tradespeople to minimise waste.

This guide provides detailed information about where to take your construction and demolition materials to be recycled when

they can no longer be utilised on site.

ü Can be recovered through crushing and grinding for fill ü Can attract a lower gate fee if separated

ü Reinforced and non-reinforced concrete can be recycled

Material should be

ü Non-asbestos-based (see Asbestos)

ü Uniformly sized if possible (processors may accept and price loads according to the size ranges of pieces e.g. loads containing pieces of dimensions <500mm, >500mm, >1000mm)

ü Clean, not containing other material including fines ü Sorted on-site before delivery to processor/recycler

Excavation material or virgin excavated natural material (VENM)

Laminated timber and engineered wood products

ü Engineered wood products include medium density fibreboard (MDF), particleboard, plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) ü Can be recovered in some cases

Material should be

ü Sorted separately from natural timbers (see Timber) ü Included in mixed waste (see Mixed waste)

Metals

ü Can be recycled

ü Can attract a lower gate fee if separated or in some cases deposited for free at a processor or recycler

ü Can receive a rebate if metal types are separated

ü Can attract a lower gate fee if separated

Material should be

ü Clean, not containing traces of other construction materials such as cement or sand

ü Sorted on-site before delivery to processor/recycler

Problem Wastes

ü Problem wastes are common wastes that have opportunities for improved recovery if they are separated from mixed wastes or general recycling.

ü Materials that can cause environmental harm or risks to safety are also problem wastes and include gas bottles, fire

extinguishers, motor oils and other oils, batteries, smoke detectors, fluoro globes and tubes. Paint is also a common problem waste (see Paint).

Material should be

ü Brought to specific sites, in commercial amounts, only if

acceptance of these quantities has been checked with the facility beforehand

ü Disposed at an appropriate facility (see the Other Resources section at the back of this document for more details)

The NSW EPA identifies problem wastes that should be separated and disposed at an appropriate facility

Timber

ü Can be recovered as mulch through sorting and shredding ü Can attract a lower gate fee if separated

ü Should be reused as formwork, bridging, blocking and propping

Material should be
