Women in Nuclear (WiN)

Dr Joanne Lackenby

President, Women in Nuclear Australia Inc

Biography

Dr Joanne Lackenby (Jo) has been employed at ANSTO since 2008 and currently holds the role of Licensing Officer at the OPAL reactor.

She has broad experience in nuclear licensing and regulation, nuclear safety, integrated management systems, incident investigations, process improvement and project management. Her expertise in these areas has been acknowledged internationally through her participation in a number of IAEA technical meetings and workshops focusing on reactor safety.

Dr Lackenby is the President of Women in Nuclear Australia Inc. and holds the Women in Nuclear Global Executive position for Oceania. She is a strong supporter of Gender Equity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and uses her position as the WiN Australia President to promote nuclear

technology to the community and encourage diversity in the nuclear workforce.

She is passionate about supporting the local community and accomplishes this through her involvement in the Rural Fire Service as a volunteer firefighter and Vice President of the Engadine Brigade.

Dr Lackenby holds a BE in environmental engineering and a PhD in geotechnical engineering, both from the University of Wollongong.

Abstract

Founded in 1992, Women in Nuclear Global (WiN Global) is an organisation that supports and encourages women working in nuclear and radiation applications. WiN has a number of objectives, one of the main ones being communication with the public, especially women and the younger generations, about the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, science and technology.

WiN currently has approximately 35 000 members (women and men), with members from over 110 countries and various international organisations.

WiN Australia Inc. (a chapter of WiN Global) was founded in 2005. Members work in a variety of fields including research, policy, defence, meteorology, reactor engineering and

20 ANA2017 Conference, Sydney, NSW, 6 Oct 2017 maintenance, reactor operations, medical physics, law, supporting roles, nuclear medicine and medical physics, mining, academia, regulation and safeguards.

WiN Global holds an annual conference, and in 2017 this was held in Beijing, China. The presentation will provide an overview of this conference, specifically:

- A summary of international nuclear power developments as detailed in the chapter reports presented at the conference

- Interesting facts and figures from the technical streams

- Details of the technical tour, which involved visiting two sites where 15 reactors of three different designs are currently being constructed.
