Workshop 1
• Workshop 1 – Group Kakariki
• The six main outcome goals for positive whānau development are:
• whānau self management
• Healthy whānau lifestyles
• Full whānau participation in society
• Confident participation in te ao Māori
• Economic security and wealth creation
• whānau cohesion – between generations &
between whānau households
Your task
• Discuss the key ways in which whānau might ‘participate in society’ and identify five areas of participation that will be critical for whānau in the future
• Then for each area suggest a catalyst that could accelerate participation.
• 1. Whanau leadership ‐ This includes educating whanau in whakapapa and identifying or providing access to whakapapa links.
• 2. Walking in two worlds – Everyday our kaimahi are walking in two worlds. This includes advocating in te ao Pakeha and in te ao Maori when required. Yet our expectations of rangatahi are that they carry themselves well in both worlds however whanau need to give them the skills to do so. Developing an
understanding of our history is integral but our challenge is how to integrate things Maori in a mainstream society. We need to educate our children but not poison them with our history and provide them with skills to move forward.
• 3. Whanau are in control (for whanau by whanau) – Using such customs as harvesting kai promotes and includes conversations around tikanga that builds intergenerational knowledge of custom and practice.
• 4. Meaningful employment – Training, employment flexibility, setting pathways, excelling whanau to push further
• 5. Cultural identity – Accessing marae and educating dislocated whanau using tuakana and teina roles
